The 2024 Joel Myerson Annual Lecture: "The scrolls of the past burn my fingers": Reviving Margaret Fuller in the Library of America and Edinburgh Editions
Wednesday, October 30, 6:00 - 7:30 p.m.
Goodwin Forum, Main Library & Live Streaming
[Register for In-Person] or [Register for Live Stream]
This year's lecture will be presented by Professors Brigitte Bailey (University of New Hampshire), Leslie Eckel (Suffolk University) and Megan Marshall (Emerson College).
Two prize-winning biographies and a recent documentary film have revived Margaret Fuller as an inspiring foremother in feminism and early American activism. Given Fuller's leadership in the Transcendentalist movement and the range of her achievements in translation, editorial work, journalism, and foreign correspondence, scholars like Brigitte Bailey, Leslie Eckel, Megan Marshall, and their colleagues have committed themselves to creating fresh and comprehensive editions of her work for the Library of America and Edinburgh University Press. Join us to learn more about their goals, challenges, and epiphanies in these new editions as we celebrate Fuller's vision of women's potential in our twenty-first-century world.
An exhibition accompanying the talk will be on view before and after the presentation. A reception will follow the event in the Rotunda.
The Concord Free Public Library Corporation generously sponsors the series.

Fall 2024 Virtual Films at Fowler
From the Coordinator of the Virtual Films at Fowler Program -
The theme of the movies this fall continues to be Faraway Places. The movies in this series will take
us to locations where we will see and experience other people, other stories and other parts of the world. Because we no longer meet in person, we now
watch—on your own schedule—selected movies on Kanopy, a free streaming service available to Concord patrons and those from other Minuteman libraries. We will then gather on Zoom on scheduled evenings for a lively movie discussion.
Strangers on a Train (1951)
Wednesday, September 11, 7:00 p.m.
(Discussion Date on Zoom)
Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller about the struggle between good and evil. A man on a train tries to convince a fellow rider to commit the perfect murder.
Please watch the film on Kanopy before the discussion. To register for the discussion and receive a Zoom link, send an email to the Coordinator of the program Randall Warniers at FilmsatFowler@concordlibrary.org. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Concord Free Public Library.

Highlights from Special Collections: Have a Great Year, Concord Students!
Many best wishes to all of our students who are heading back to school. Have a great year!
These days, students may get to school on foot or by bicycle, public transportation, or car, but those traveling a longer distance may be stepping onto a school bus to get to their destination.
In the 19th century, the standard means of transporting pupils to school in Concord, who lived in outlying districts more than one mile away, was the school wagon, or "barge," a modified horse-drawn farm wagon covered in canvas tarpaulins.
In the winter, the barge was frequently put on runners. Pictured here are elementary students arriving at Emerson School, built in 1880, on what is now Stow Street, one of three elementary schools serving Concord students at the time.
Among manuscripts and reports documenting the history of Concord's private and public education, Special Collections holds the Letters to philosopher and educator William Torrey Harris [1864]-1909. Harris was a resident of Concord from 1880-1889, where he assisted Bronson Alcott and Franklin B. Sanborn in managing the Concord School of Philosophy. Harris also held the position of Concord's Superintendent of Schools from 1882-1885. Harris' collection includes letters to Harris from Louisa May Alcott, Edward Waldo Emerson, Julia Ward Howe, Mary Peabody Mann, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, and Franklin Benjamin Sanborn, among others.
For those who would like to reminisce about their high school years, Special Collections also holds the yearbooks from Concord-Carlisle High School, Concord Academy, and Middlesex School.
