Led by Rev. Elizabeth Mount

Sometimes issues like climate change can seem too big for any single person to make a meaningful difference, but the truth is that every one of us has the potential to be life saving change bringers. Today, join Reverend Elizabeth Mount, whose bridge-climbing protest action in 2015 changed the legal landscape around arctic drilling in multiple countries and shut down a hazardous oil operation in the Chukchi Sea in its planning stages. Their experiences during this protest changed the way Rev. Mount thinks about community activism and about the power of faith and covenant to help us live and thrive on this planet.

Bio of service leader:  The Rev. Elizabeth Mount (pronouns: they, them, theirs) is a member of the UUA's Board of Trustees Unitarian Universalist Church of Cheyenne, Wyoming. As a lifelong Unitarian Universalist who grew up in the First Unitarian Society of Denver, CO, Rev. Mount has a deep understanding of both the power and pitfalls of religious organizations and a deep commitment to this religious faith and the possibility of a better world that our shared religion offers. For this reason, they have been consistently a part of local, regional, and denominational work since the 1990s, when they began serving on congregational and district committees as a Youth.

Prior to seminary studies, Rev. Mount was a community organizer with environmental and Latine community projects in Western North Carolina, the Appalachian coal fields, and the highlands of Guatemala. They currently participate in environmental justice, anti-racism, and disaster relief work within and beyond Unitarian Universalism, including with the Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA), the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association (UUMA), Transgender Religious profession Unitarian Universalists Together (TRUUST), and Allies for Racial Equity (ARE).

Art Show

On Sunday, May 5 we will be doing another "Sunday Funday" for our worship service. As part of this, we will be setting up an all-ages Art Show with the theme of "UU Principles and Sources".

Several people have had questions about the plans, so we'd like to address those here:

Q: What is the theme?

A: Anything that reminds you of UUCSW, or UU values or principles is fine! Click here to see a list of UU Principles and Sources. Some themes to consider: justice, love, nature, freedom, interdependence, equity, dignity, generosity.

Q: What is the goal?

A: Beauty, conversation starters, an opportunity to create or admire art, and fun! It will be a wonderful example of the many different ways that people are reminded of the beauty of UUism through art.

Q: Does it have to be something I created?

A: No, the artwork will be a combination of things created by UUCSW members and children, and artwork that people have purchased or have in their possession.

Q: What are some examples of art that will be displayed?

A: Kids' art from RE Sundays, international art, art created by members of the congregation. Paintings, glass, sculpture, poetry, drawings, woodwork, fabric art - any medium is welcome.

Q: How long will the art be kept/displayed?

A: As long as the owner would like it to stay here; it is completely up to the owner or artist. The display will stay up until the beginning of June, but some pieces might be removed before then if the owner doesn't want to leave them at the church. Some pieces of art are being given to the church permanently, and others might only be displayed the morning of May 5.

Q: Who is the audience?

A: Us! This art show will be just for the congregation.

Q: Is there anything that would not be acceptable for the art show?

A: Most of the art will be in the chapel along with activities going on, so anything very large or cumbersome won't work. If you have a piece of art that is valuable, please let us know ahead of time and we will be sure to display it in an area that's out of reach. Also, this is an all-ages activity, so please avoid art that is graphic in nature. Otherwise - use your imagination and have fun!

Garden Committee

Now that the weather is nice and we can go outside, check your gardens for plants to split and donate to the Garden Dedication Plant Sale. Do you have over grown perennials such as daisies, Lilly-of-the-Valley, and hostas? We need potted plants to sell on Saturday June 8th. Thank you!

Options for Assistive Listening during Worship Services

If you are in need of Assistive Listening Devices during worship service, please know that we have several options.

  • We have assistive listening devices available in the front of the sanctuary in the tech area
  • You may log into Zoom from the sanctuary and sync with hearing aids
  • There is Closed Captioning on the big screen at the front of the sanctuary. If you sit on the right side of the church, you will have a clear view of the text

If you need anything other than the options above, please contact the office at office@uucsw.org and we will work with you to accommodate your needs.
