Industry Sponsored Legislation Passes First Committee

BOMA California's advocate Skyler Wonnacott provided testimony in support of AB 2433 (Quirk-Silva; D-Fullerton) on Wednesday. The industry sponsored bill addresses the lengthy delays in the building permit process and was heard in the Assembly Local Government Committee where it passed with overwhelming bi-partisan support with a vote of 7-0.

If signed into law, AB 2433 would improve the efficiency of local government operations by establishing clear timelines for permit processing. The bill would also establish the conditional use of private professionals for plan-checking and inspections if a local agency fails to meet the set deadlines.

BOMA Cal Helps Halt Attack on Coastal Resorts

BOMA Cal along with a coalition of business groups and associations successfully lobbied hard against AB 3192 (Muratsuchi; D-Torrance), The Major Coastal Resorts Environmental Accountability Act. The bill unfairly targets coastal resorts without solid scientific evidence, suggesting these resorts have more environmental impact than other coastal developments. Skyler Wonnacott, BOMA California's Senior Director of Government Relations testified in opposition to the bill on Monday in the Assembly Natural Resources Committee. The bill failed on a 5–3 vote. The bill, however, received a reconsideration vote and will have a final vote at next week’s Natural Resources Committee hearing. We will continue advocating to ensure the committee members who abstained or voted no remain opposed to the bill.

Legislative Session Heats Up As BOMA Cal Advocates For Numerous Bills

It's the busy season in the State Capitol as numerous bills of interest to our industry are being heard in committee for the first time. Retail theft remains a key issue for our industry, with your advocates in Sacramento testifying in support of the following bills aimed at addressing the problem, in addition to our support of the proposed ballot measure

Another key focus of our efforts is advocating for legislation aimed at streamlining the adaptive reuse of commercial property. BOMA Cal has taken a support position on AB 2909 and AB 2910 (Santiago; D-Los Angeles), which would transform historic buildings and underutilized commercial spaces into residential housing, revitalizing California's urban landscapes with a sustainable approach. For more information on our legislative efforts, contact Skyler Wonnacott at swonnacott@cbpa.com.
