SYNOD ASSEMBLY REPORTS

Trinity at the Synod…… by Birgit Lilligren
On May 31 and June 1, 2024, Mary Lenihan, Wolf Heim, and myself attended the ELCA 2024 Southwest California Synod Assembly taking place at the Lutheran Center in Glendale, CA. While Mary and I were the elected congregation representatives from Trinity, Wolf participated as a member of the synod council at this event titled “The Unity of the Church”.
The two days of the assembly were structured very differently. The Friday session was filled with workshops and a ministry fair. The 39 (!) workshops took place during 4 time slots with participants being able to pick according to their interests. I opted for Brenda Bos’ Bishop’s report with Q + A to familiarize myself with synod issues – after all, I was a “first timer” attending. The “Middle East Task Force” workshop by Bishop Dean Nelson offered interesting insights for me into the ELCJHL (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land). Next, Pr. Caleb Grainer provided useful tips during his “Upgrading Your Bible Study” session while Pr. Josh McGuffie shared info on “Environmental Justice and Lutherans”.
In addition, the ministry fair allowed for conversation with the various ministry representatives at the tables set up in the Lutheran Center’s courtyard. I learned that the “Women of the ELCA” will have one of their summer picnics on June 29 in Marina Del Rey and decided to attend. Join me if interested!
The lunch and the dinner reception in honor of Bishop Guy Erwin offered plenty of opportunity to meet representatives from some of the other 78 congregations present and exchange experiences, thoughts, and ideas.
A heartfelt thank-you to the congregation of Trinity Lutheran for giving me the opportunity to participate in this year’s synod assembly!

Trinity at the Synod…..by Mary Lenihan

The Saturday sessions were all general sessions, led by Bishop Brenda Bos. They ranged from inspiring stories of what various Synod member congregations are doing to assist others, and many reports regarding Synod finances and administration. Like Birgit, this was my first time attending a Synod Assembly. I, too, am thankful I had the opportunity to learn more about so many things—the nitty gritty of overseeing the many Synod congregations; specific changes to Synod operations; new Synod employees; and, perhaps most significant, the amazing and sometimes heart-rending programs led by member congregations that provide much needed assistance to others.

Two retired Bishops—Pastor Guy Erwin and Pastor Dean Nelson—were recognized and honored in various ways. They have been a blessing to us all through their many years of service, and we continue to be blessed with Pastor Nelson’s presence here at Trinity.

Elections were held; our own Pastor Barclay, obviously known to many across the Synod, was elected to two positions. More about that in future e-News.

The inspiring stories we heard from other congregations—sheltering immigrants from Mauritania; providing inspiring worship and community services to a largely immigrant Chinese congregation; prison ministry at Lompoc; thriving food ministries—reminded us of the foundation of our call as inspired by the Holy Spirit: to do God’s work with our hands.

The Saturday sessions harkened back to a key point made by Bishop Bos on Friday—that out of the disruptions of Covid and changing demographics has emerged an energized call to faithfulness and service among both clergy and congregants.

Trinity Celebrates Pride Month

As an intentionally welcoming, inclusive and affirming congregation, Trinity celebrates with LGBTQIA+ friends a month of Pride. May this PRIDE season be a time for us all to see the ways the Divine is embodied in our beloved LGBTQIA+ siblings and recommit to the work of justice!

At Trinity, during the month of June the Altar Guild will feature the Rainbow Flag as part of the banners and decoration of our gathering area: the narthex. This sign of inclusion and welcome celebrates the gift of diversity in our midst and encourages us to strive toward the full inclusion of all people, including those of diverse sexual and gender identities as part of God's beautiful creation.

Please check out local Pride events and if you'd like to learn more or find a way to participate, check out the "Call to Action" links below from our partners at Reconciling Works.

As people of faith, our support of the LGBTQIA+ community is more critical than ever. As more states double down on LGBTQIA+ discrimination, your voice and the voice of your faith community have a tremendous impact on the safety of LGBTQIA+ people. LGBTQIA+ do not have federal protections for public accommodation. This means it is up to individual cities, counties, and states to create nondiscrimination laws and policies based on gender identity and sexual orientation. What this means is that LGBTQIA+ people can be denied access to simple things like having a bakery make their wedding cake or photography for their wedding. It also means more impactful access to essential accommodations like housing, life-saving medical care, and access to skilled nursing facilities. This PRIDE, take the time to utilize the following Reconciling Works resources to support you in the holy work of justice:

Conversation on Peace and the Middle East

June 23, 2024

Trinity welcomes Bishop Emeritus Dean Nelson who will be preaching and presiding at worship while Pr. Douglas is away in Europe. On June 23, following worship, Bp. Nelson will offer a time for reflection and discussion on his experiences working with partners in the Palestinian Territories over the last many years. He will offer insights on his “on the ground” experiences and conversations that can help to shed light on how we can advocate and work for peace. The forum will be held in the conference room in the parish admin building.
