Federal Government Releases Asian Carp Control Strategy for 2013; New Efforts Include Mobile Electric Barrier

The federal government released its 2013 Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework, which details how federal agencies will act to prevent introduction and establishment of Asian carp in the Great Lakes. The Framework focuses on multiple pathways of potential introduction. New projects for 2013 include: completing design of the permanent barrier I and awarding a construction contract in Chicago; finalizing measures for preventing a transfer of Asian carp through Eagle Marsh in Indiana; transitioning the eDNA work from the Army Corps to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service lab in La Crosse, Wisconsin; and increasing monitoring in Lake Michigan as well as western Lake Erie waters of Ohio and Michigan. Efforts in 2013 will also include the design and construction of a mobile electric dispersal barrier to be deployed in the Chicago Area Waterway System, or other waterways, on an emergency or experimental basis. The full Framework is available here.
