Blatnik Bridge Reconstruction Project
The Interstate 535 Blatnik Bridge connects Duluth, Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin and is the second largest bridge in Minnesota. The existing bridge is in poor condition, has high crash rates, and limits freight mobility due to weight limitations. This reconstruction project is being developed to update the structure to current standards, add bicycle and pedestrian facilities, and improve traffic operations. The project is tentatively scheduled to begin construction in 2027, although one or more smaller traditional projects may be executed prior to that time in order to prepare the site for construction and keep the process on schedule. MnDOT and the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will cost share in this project. Officials announced Monday that the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded nearly $1.06 billion in federal funding to replace the bridge.
“This is big news for Minnesota. This investment will make it possible for Minnesota and Wisconsin to rebuild a critical connection between our states that will foster regional economic growth, strengthen our national supply chains, and improve the safety and reliability of our transportation network,” Gov. Tim Walz said in a statement. “This is a project that will serve hundreds of communities between our states.”
The letting date is Fall of 2026.
