Happy Birthday to those members of our community who are celebrating this week including Fred Fraser, Luisa Bonillas, and Ruby Sylvestre.

Vestry-On-Call: Ms. Rosalind Vernon

Our live stream of last week's service failed due to a technical difficulty. The problem has been fixed. We were however able to capture the sermon. You can listen to remarks from Rev. Anne HERE on our YouTube page.

Interim Dean and Priest-in-Charge's Note

We knew last Sunday would be glorious as we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Ordination of Women in the Episcopal Church, but I never imagined being thanked and honored by all of you: by your presence, willingness to be servant leaders, generous gifts – beautiful flowers and a delicious coffee hour, and your kind words and loving support. I give special thanks to St. John’s Parish Life Committee, the Rev. Mel Soriano, and Canon Lurelean Gaines, Senior Warden. Thank you for the opportunity to serve with you in ministry.

Times of transition are challenging because they require us to discern how God is calling us forward. This requires carrying the best of the past with us, as we open our minds and hearts to all the possibilities that exist. I believe with heart and soul that the future of St. John’s is bright as we continue growing in faith, taking action, speaking up, and living fully into God’s beloved community. All are welcome here.

With love and blessings,

Anne+

Stewardship Note

Friend in Christ, we could use your pledge this month of August; cash flow is king. Who hasn’t found themselves short after a fabulous trip or vacation, new appliance, household repair, unexpected break from work, new hobby or an expense that stretches our budget!

At church, it’s simply the ebbs and flows of when folks attend services or remember their pledge of financial support that’s affecting us; Summer can be difficult that way.

On a positive note, St. John’s Cathedral is doing great financially in comparison to the past four years. We did begin the year with a stretch - inching back to our sweet spot in terms of an operating budget. Pledging and plate are up, however, securing rental, film and bequest income are often beyond our control.

Yesterday I made an extra generous pledge payment to St. John’s to 1) get caught up on my pledge to date; and 2) to help us financially during this third inning stretch. Will you consider doing the same?

We are not asking for more, per se; rather we are simply asking if you might consider giving now during the month of August. Your church, St. John’s Cathedral, would be most grateful to you.

You’re invited to live into this community all summer long. On Saturday we will be playing in the garden and training new ushers. There are other community activities on the horizon, and more in the works. All things are possible; let us know if there’s something else you have in mind.

We also have free tickets to the Hollywood Bowl thanks to Canon Earl Mounger for two upcoming concerts. Details will be given on Sunday and tickets will be dispersed on a first come, first offered basis. We hope you will join the fun.

Thank you for your presence and loving support among us at St. John’s Cathedral. So much good is happening! We hope you will be a part of it all.

We send you love and blessings.

The Very Reverend Anne Sawyer

Community

The Episcopal Church stands in solidarity with the people of Venezuela following the presidential election. We believe that governments function best when they are responsive and participatory. We encourage Episcopalians to stay informed about the situation and pray for our fellow Episcopalians (Iglesia Episcopal Anglicana de Venezuela) and all Venezuelans.

Learn more about the situation here.

From Heyden Morales, Sexton:

The situation in Venezuela has turned incredibly violent, with mass killings reported in every state and government-sponsored kidnappings of clergy, opposition politicians, and their supporters. The Office of Government Relations of the Episcopal Church encourages us to pay close attention and pray for a swift and peaceful resolution of the conflict.

Venezuela holds a special place in the hearts of the Hispanic Caribbean as it is seen as the cradle of freedom for many nations.

We must join together and pray that freedom may prevail in what was the cradle of Caribbean freedom! The Clergy of the Episcopal-Anglican Diocese of Venezuela (Part of the IX Province of the Episcopal Church), as well as its Lay Leaders, are asking for us at Saint John's to pray for them, especially for the congregations in the capital, Caracas, as they are in lockdown with the city at a standstill for the last four days. I'd ask everyone in our Cathedral community to keep them in your prayers today, and for the next few months, my beloved Venezuelan friends, who are also where my regional ancestry comes from.

Gloria al Bravo Pueblo!!!...(Glory to the Brave People)

This week, that stanza of the Venezuelan anthem will ring in Latin American capitals and schools across the region as a show of solidarity and a shout for the return of better days for the Venezuelan people.

Date set for 2024 Episcopal-Lutheran Night at Dodger Stadium

Episcopalians are invited to join their Lutheran siblings at Episcopal-Lutheran Night at Dodger Stadium on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m.

The Dodgers will play the Cleveland Guardians. Tickets will be $35. Fireworks and a drone show are scheduled after the game.
