Remembering Bernie Turner

MacHabitat is saddened to learn of the passing of Bernie Turner on Friday, June 28. Bernie was not only one of the founders of the Habitat for Humanity affiliate in the McMinnville area, he also brought his leadership skills and loving nature to the organization, bringing us where we are today - 72 houses and hundreds of lives changed for the better.

With fellow founders Vern and Rosemary Cooprider and original co-president Mark Trumbo, Bernie set out with his wife, Roz, along with Joyce Palmer and Margie Taylor, to work toward the mission of providing safe, decent, affordable houses for low-income home buyers. He paved the way for Executive Directors, Board Members, and volunteers to continue the work he began 33 years ago, bringing people together to build homes, community, and hope.

Bernie supported MacHabitat every one of those 33 years – even raising more than $5,000 in a Hope Builder letter writing campaign just last year, which helped build more affordable homes on his namesake street in the Aspire Community Development, Turner Way.

Rest In Peace, dear Bernie – and thank you.

Continuing his Legacy...

What better way to honor Bernie last Friday, than by giving a MacHabitat partner family the keys to their new house! Daniel and Hillary are the newest homeowners in the Aspire Community Development, and we couldn’t be more excited for their family.

Thank you to our community whose hands, hours, and hearts were used to build this home for the Cuauxinque family. Your dedication to providing affordable home ownership in our area is helping bring people together to build homes, community, and hope!

Welcome home, Cuauxinque family!

Shout Out!

MacHabitat has completed FOUR more homes as of July, the most constructed at one time since the Aspire Development began in 2014! This massive accomplishment is in large part due to our volunteer construction crew, and we want to give them a special shoutout as we reach this milestone. Our core crew worked on framing, siding, windows, flooring, cabinets, fences and finish work inside and outside, which was especially challenging to navigate between four of the same home layouts! We can't express enough gratitude to these generous and talented volunteers. Our core crew includes: Adrian Chitty, Al Bartsch, Brad Lunt, Justin Hanks, Dave Tegtmeier, Gerry Koschal, Gerry Smith, Howie Leichter, Jackson Ross, Jim Jacot, Jim Parker, Kent Stevens, Kurt Holmgreen, Mark Cooke, Steve Iversen, and Wanda Cochran.
