Howard University faculty Dr. Sergai Nekhai, DC CFAR Basic Sciences Core Director, Dr. Georges Haddad, Director of the Investigator Development Program for the Howard University RCMI program, and Dr. Mark Burke, DC CFAR Developmental Core Co-Director have been awarded Research Center in Minority Institutions (RCMI)-CFAR supplemental awards to support HIV/AIDS research.
The NIH established the RCMI program in 1985 in response to Congressional interest in expanding the national capacity for research in the health sciences, minority health, and health disparities research. Howard University is one of 22 RCMI centers across the United States. These supplemental awards are intended to spur collaboration between RCMI centers and CFARs.
Dr. Nekhai's project is entitled “Increased risk of HIV-1 infection among African Americans with Ferroportin Q248H mutation.” Dr. Seble Kassaye (GU) is a co-Investigator in this project and she will facilitate access and screening of MACS cohort participants. Drs. Haddad and Burke's project is entitled “The cardiovascular effects of gestational and perinatal combined antiretroviral therapy (cART),” and this project builds upon Dr. Haddad's DC CFAR 2022 Pilot Award, "Effects of cART on the Heart."

Dr. Manya Magnus, DC CFAR Co-Director, named Chair of Department of Epidemiology at GW Milken Institute School of Public Health | |
On January 2nd, The Milken Institute School of Public Health at the George Washington University (GW) announced that Manya Magnus, PhD, MPH, had been named Chair of the Department of Epidemiology.
Dr. Magnus serves as Co-Director of the DC CFAR, Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) Leader and contact MPI for the DC CTU and the Evaluation Lead for the CFAR Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Pathway Initiative (CDEIPI) Program. Previously Dr. Magnus served as the Co-Director of the DC CFAR Clinical and Population Sciences Core.
Dr. Magnus's expertise includes clinical trials research, biomedical and structural interventions to prevent HIV transmission, advanced epidemiologic methods and analysis, research design, implementation, and regulatory coordination, program evaluation, and community engagement in HIV research.

Please join us for the virtual DC CFAR Pilot Awards 101 session hosted by the Developmental Core on Tuesday, January 30, from 3:00-4:00 pm ET.
This event will provide an overview of the DC CFAR and an orientation to the Traditional Pilot Awards program. The Traditional Pilot Awards program aims to provide pilot funds on a competitive basis to early-stage and new HIV/AIDS investigators to assist them in the development of their NIH-funded research careers.
The agenda will include an overview of this DC CFAR funding opportunity and the core services available for its members, an opportunity to share research goals and interests, and a discussion with the Developmental Core Directors.

Intersectionality Summer Intensive, Application due Feb 9, 2024
The Intersectionality Training Institute is accepting applications for the third cohort of its Intersectionality Summer Intensive. The Intersectionality Summer Intensive (ISI 2024) is a weeklong in-person training designed for researchers interested in learning how to apply intersectionality to their qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods research projects. Lisa Bowleg, PhD, MA and Greta Bauer, PhD, MPH, leading experts of intersectionality, developed ISI ’24 to be a transformative, intellectually stimulating, and engaging environment where researchers and practitioners can meet, learn, and build community with other researchers, scholars, and practitioners who are passionate about applying intersectionality to health equity research, including HIV-related projects. ISI ’24 will be held in Philadelphia, PA from July 8 through July 12, 2024. We are thrilled to share that Dr. Patricia Homan will be our distinguished guest and facilitator. Dr. Homan, Associate Professor of Sociology and Associate Director of the Public Health Program at Florida State University, is in the vanguard of research and scholarship on structural intersectionality and health equity research.
