DC CFAR Social and Behavioral Sciences Co-Director, Dr. Nina Yamanis, Promoted to Full Professor

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Nina Yamanis on being promoted to the rank of Full Professor in the School of International Service (SIS) at American University (AU), effective September 1, 2024.


Dr. Yamanis is the Co-Director of the DC CFAR Social and Behavioral Sciences Core, Scientific Officer for the CFAR Adelante Program, and Acting Associate Dean for Graduate Education for the SIS at AU.


Dr. Yamanis’s current HIV-related work focuses on two different communities: her R21 in Tanzania focuses on a pilot social network intervention to reduce HIV and IPV among adolescent girls, and her work in Washington, DC focuses on the impact of immigration status on Latino/x men who have sex with men (MSM) and Latina/x transgender women.

Share Your Abstract Title for AIDS - IAS 2024, 25th International AIDS Conference, July 22-26, 2024

Dear DC CFAR Investigators,


Please let us know if you have had an abstract accepted for a poster, oral presentation, or are receiving an award at AIDS 2024, the 25th International AIDS Conference, in Munich, Germany from July 22-26, 2024. We would like to share this good news with your fellow DC CFAR investigators, including those who will also participate at AIDS- IAS 2024. 


Please send the name of the award recipient, or for abstracts, the name of the presenting author, the title, whether it will be an oral or poster presentation, and the date and session of your presentation to DCCFAR@gwu.edu.


Please send this information by July 15, 2024.

Updated HIV Language Guide Now Available from NIAID

Please see the updated HIV Language Guide from NIAID here. The guide includes language suggestions for communicating about HIV and related topics, particularly on the use of person-first, non-stigmatizing language.


This guide aims to help scientists, administrators, researchers, funded research networks, sites, centers, investigators, and stakeholders use fair, accurate, and respectful language as they draft protocols and develop communications and outreach materials.

Recording Available – "Using the Prevention Toolbox" Plenary Session from HPTN 2024 Meeting, Moderated by DC CFAR Co-Director, Manya Magnus

On June 17, 2024, Dr. Manya Magnus, DC CFAR Co-Director, moderated a session at the NIH-funded HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN) meeting entitled, "Using the Prevention Toolbox." Over 600 HIV prevention researchers from around the globe gathered in DC for its annual five-day meeting. Session speakers included Dr. Zubair Lukyazumi (Makerere University–Johns Hopkins University) who presented a new community-based protocol based in barber shops in Uganda; Dr. Jeffrey Stringer (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) who presented compelling findings regarding AI-enabled ultrasound to capture lay-provider measurements of birthweight outcomes in HIV-prevention studies; Dr. Romain Silhol (HPTN Modelling Centre and Imperial College) described innovative uses of modeling for identification of priority populations for HIV epidemic responses, and Dr. Mackenzie Cottrell (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) discussed research on on-demand PrEP dosing for women that will fill an urgent public health gap.

Announcing the Spring 2024 DC CFAR Pilot Awardees: Drs. Preethi Chandran (HU), Haijun Gao (HU), & Taisuke Izumi (AU)

Please join us in congratulating the following investigators who are the recipients of DC CFAR Pilot Awards in the Spring 2024 cycle: Dr. Preethi Chandran, Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering at Howard University, Dr. Haijun Gao, Assistant Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at Howard University, and Dr. Taisuke Izumi, Assistant Professor of Biology at American University.


Dr. Chandran's project is entitled, "Effect of environmental factors on interactions between HIV and vaginal mucosal barriers." Dr. Gao's project is entitled, "The effects of cabotegrevir on placental mitochondrial functions." Dr. Izumi's project is entitled, "Comprehensive Functional HIV Cure Strategy: The Role of HDAC, PARP, and Immune Checkpoint Inhibitors for Latency Reversal and Immune Activation."

Apply Now – Senior Research Scientist Position, Department of Epidemiology, GW Milken School of Public Health – DC Cohort Longitudinal Study

The Department of Epidemiology of the GW Milken Institute School of Public Health (GWSPH) is recruiting for a Senior Research Scientist for a large NIH-funded HIV study, the DC Cohort. The DC Cohort is one of the largest urban HIV cohort studies in the US and is a longitudinal observational study of people living with HIV (PWH) and receiving care at 15 clinical sites in Washington, DC. The study captures clinical information on PWH in care and has been enrolling since 2011 in partnership with numerous clinical providers in Washington, DC, the DC Department of Health (DC DOH), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIH UNITE Structural Racism and Health Workshop, July 18–19, 2024. Registration Open.

The National Institutes of Health’s UNITE initiative is hosting a two-day virtual workshop on July 18–19 entitled “Interdisciplinary Approaches to Understanding and Addressing Structural Racism and Health.”

This workshop will bring together researchers, clinicians, and community partners with expertise in fields such as social and natural sciences, law and criminal justice, education, public policy, social work—as well as biomedical, behavioral, and public health.
