Mary Magdalene Church

~Weekly Update~

Mary Magdalene Church is an inclusive church in the Catholic tradition where people from all faiths and backgrounds are welcome to the Lord’s table. We strive to live the values that Jesus taught, to honor and respect each individual and to share the joy of God’s unconditional love in our community and beyond.

~A Message from Ursula Arnold~

Dear Denise,

Spiritual Direction: Having a "soul friend" on our journey to God.

Anam Cara are the Gaelic words for "soul friend." In the Celtic tradition, an Anam Cara is a teacher, companion or spiritual guide. The ministry of a spiritual director is often referred to in this manner. The beautiful relationship in spiritual direction is like having a "soul friend" on our journey to God.

I believe that the desire to share one's deepest longings for God with a spiritual director starts and ends with two important fundamentals. The first is of finding God in all things and all things in God, or the recognition that nothing in our lives is considered outside the realm of the spiritual life. The second is that God is loving, self communicating and wants to be in relationship with us.

Spiritual direction can be an opportunity that opens the door to a deeper awareness of God in the ordinary of our lives and in the intimacy of relationship with the divine. Having this "soul friend" who listens compassionately, as we speak honestly and freely, gives the directee the spiritual space necessary to experience God in unexpected ways.  The ordinary of life becomes opportunity for encounter. During our times of inner silence and reflection we recognize that we are God's beloved.

There are many topics to explore in spiritual direction. A person might want to explore the image of God in one's life, explore or deepen his/her prayer life, increase self awareness and insight, or explore a deeper intimacy with Jesus.

If you are interested in finding a spiritual director or "Anam Cara" you can contact Sue Gerber in the parish office to get contact information for spiritual directors who meet with folks at Mary Magdalene Church.

From John O'Dononhue's book Anam Cara

In everyone's life there is a great need for

anam cara, a soul friend.

In this love you are understood as you are

without mask or pretension.....

Love allows understanding to dawn.... where

you are understood, you are at home.

Compassion and Listening Ministry

We are happy to share this new ministry coming to Mary Magdalene soon. Compassionate listening occurs when we listen from our soul into the soul of another. Thich Nhat Hahn describes it as “…the type of listening that can relieve suffering within a person.” If you have a heart filled with compassion; are interested in learning how to listen to your own internal voice; and desire to be a better listener to others, save the weekend of May 31, June 1 & 2 .

Things to do at MMC!

A note from Kathy Mrzywka and the Hospitality Team

In the spirit of hospitality, we ask that you consider wearing your name tags on Sundays, especially during coffee hour. If for any reason you are unable to return your name tag to the bulletin board on the first floor, a basket is available in Fellowship Hall. Someone will return the tags to the board for the following Sunday. Thank you!

Self Compassion Workshop

Many people struggle with being hard on themselves, especially if they grew up in conservative religious or authoritarian environments. Learning about self-compassion can help them become more resilient, improve their relationships and be kinder to themselves and others. Participants at this workshop will learn about what self compassion is (and what it's not) and gain practical tools for practicing it. The workshop will be led by Susanna Guarino, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, a therapist in private practice in Rochester who specializes in working with individuals and couples with religious trauma. Join us on June 5th at 7PM at MMC and on Zoom.
