We don’t know what we don’t know, and . . . . .
|
Sometimes new awareness can lead to being uncomfortable, at times very uncomfortable. Then there are choices to be made. We might be tempted to turn back, deny actual truth, pretend we really don’t know, ignore the reality, try to live the way we were in comfortable “oblivion.” Except, the discomfort’s already there, and once we do know, can we ever again “not know?”
Alternatively, we could walk the path of embracing reality and learning more--which could lead to more discomfort, confusion, even pain. However, if we can muster the courage and fortitude to continue on this path of discovery of fuller, more complete, nuanced truth, clarity may come, and we may find ourselves taking action for justice, perhaps even becoming strong justice advocates. We do have choices. In fact, we have to choose, and not to decide is actually already to have made a decision.
Another suggestion for your summer reading is a book describe by Publishers Weekly as, “An extraordinarily honest and revealing book that poses the issue: loyalty to one’s ethnic group or loyalty to conscience.”

This true story about racism, embedded both within oneself and in the surrounding society, details one white woman’s journey from oblivion to uncomfortable awareness, to intentional action, to powerful advocacy. Set in the 1960’s, this book remains relevant, powerful, and poignant as long as racial hatred continues in this country, as long as the truth of racial hatred goes unrecognized or is minimized, as long as we fail to hear and speak the truth, and until we allow truth to transform our souls, our churches, and our society.
Shall we spend some intentional time this summer learning truth, opening ourselves to the reality around us, aligning ourselves with the movement of Spirit and with Spirit’s transforming power in our lives and in our world?

ORCHARD LAKE COMMUNITY CHURCH, PRESBYTERIAN
CELEBRATES 150 YEARS
On July 21, the congregation of Orchard Lake Community Church, Presbyterian is
celebrating the 150th anniversary of the dedication of its chapel, once known as the
Church in the Wildwood.
The celebration will commence with a special church service at 10 am, including bagpipes and a unique bell tolling for each of the 150 years of this historic Christian institution. The service will be followed by an ice cream social including a light lunch.
Historical exhibits will be displayed inside the original building. The day will conclude with a presentation by Katherine Cangany, PhD, a direct descendent of church founders, Colin and Caroline Campbell. Her topic will be on the connection of nearby Apple Island to the founding of the church. The Campbells summered on Apple Island and sought to share their faith with the increasing number of people visiting the lakes area each season.
Thanks to prayers and hard work (including selling grapes to help pay for construction), the cornerstone of Orchard Lake Community Church was laid in 1871 with the original chapel dedicated three years later on July 18, 1874.

The Sashabaw Presbyterian Historic "Century" Building Project
On June 26 - Sashabaw Presbyterian Church began an exciting collaboration with the White Lake and Clarkston wards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). Together, 87 people and 225 labor hours later cleaned out the inside of the historic building, removed the rotted handicap ramp, and finished boarding up the windows to prevent further break ins and vandalism. We're now ready to move on to phase 2!
We are seeking an architect who is willing to donate their services to this project. Once we have architectural plans, we can pull permits and get started on transforming this historic building into a future community center!
If you would like to donate funds or skills to the project, please email sashabawpresbyterianchurch@gmail.com with "Historic Building" in the subject line. The chair of the Historic Building Community Commission is Elder Abigail Wright.
