Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
Matthew 28:16-20
At the end of Matthew’s Gospel Jesus calls his disciples to go out to the ends of the earth (The Great Commission) baptizing in the name of the Trinity and teaching all that Jesus had taught. We are called to approach the mission of sharing the faith of Jesus Christ with a new vigor, with creativity, with increased love, and with abundant joy.

MARY, IMMACULATE
PATRONESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
| |
This Memorial Day, let us reflect on the sacrifice of those who nobly gave of themselves for a purpose they believed to be greater than themselves. As we remember the brave men and women of our Armed Forces, let us also remember the patroness of our great country - Mary, Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception.
As Jesus sacrificed for us, Mary sacrificed, too. Mary is "co-redemptrix." We acknowledge her cooperation with Jesus in the redemption of humanity. She carried Jesus in her womb, raised him, assisted and supported him in his ministry, and was with him during his Passion and death.
In May of 1846, the Blessed Virgin Mary was named as patroness of this country, invoked under her title of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. This title was very familiar to the people of the United States. Some historians believe that the flagship of Christopher Columbus was named Santa Maria de Concepcion, and he afterwards named an island La Concepcion. Subsequent geographic features in America would be named in honor of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception including the National Shrine of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. - the largest Catholic church building in the United States.

God of power and mercy,
you destroy war and put down earthly pride.
Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears,
that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters.
Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom
and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace.
We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.
