Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ
overcame death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life:
Grant that we, who celebrate with joy the day of the Lord's resurrection,
may be raised from the death of sin by your life-giving Spirit;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Sow and Grow
Are you interested in gardening?
We could use your help.
We also would welcome your donations of bags of dirt and packets of seeds, especially pumpkins, squash, zucchini, onions, carrots.
Sow and Grow is a creation care project helping the children of ECS Head Start learn about the earth, plants, and care for God’s creation.
The children plant a variety of vegetable and flower seeds in individual cups. Then, they plant the seedlings in gardens, water, and watch their plants grow.
We take care of watering while the children are on summer break.
In the Fall, the children harvest the vegetables which they take home to their families to eat.

ECS Moonlight Ball Silent Auction Basket
Episcopal Community Services sponsors the Moonlight Ball, an annual fundraiser to support life-changing programs that empower the most vulnerable members of society. Last year our Head Start director invited St. John’s to create a basket for the Silent Auction. We have been asked once again to create a basket for the May 18th event. We want to finish by April 5th.
We’ve chosen the theme “Everything Chocolate” and would like help from our parishioners in filling the basket. Here are some suggestions:
- A large basket
- Chocolates such as Ghirardelli, Russell Stover, See’s etc.
- Truffles
- Chocolate cookbook
- Tea towel with chocolate theme
- Mug
- Chocolate liquor
We have already received several chocolate microwave cakes in individual servings.
We would like to include a gift certificate for a chocolate store, so cash donations would be welcome.

If you are not able to bring them, please contact the parish office, and we will pick up the items from your home.

Prayers and Squares: The Prayer Quilt Ministry
St. John's is a member of a national organization called "Prayers and Squares: The Prayer Quilt Ministry".
Prayers and Squares will not meet in April.
Prayers and Squares meets on the second Tuesday of each month to sew. Participants will be shown how to make simple quilts for our Prayer Quilt Ministry. If you don't sew but would like to be a part of this ministry, there are many other quilt-making steps you can help with.
Please bring your own sewing machine and brown bag lunch. If you have any questions, please contact Debbie Lothspeich.
If you would like to request a Prayer Quilt for anyone in need of prayer and support, please contact Diane Gustafson (diangus15@aol.com) or Maria (maria@saint-johns.org).
This important ministry brings comfort and healing to many people who are suffering with illness.

Holy Week: When Everything is Not Okay

As we enter Holy Week this year, I find myself overwhelmed with the world around us. Our country is shrouded in intense political animosity. A migrant and refugee problem is upon us, with a scale of need so big it sometimes seems to blot out compassion and the ability to see the human frailty of others. Wars rage across the globe with profound human tragedy and suffering.
In the midst of the chaos, we enter the holiest time of year for Christians: Holy Week.

Ministry from a Place of Self Awareness

Diocesan Hikes: Sacred Trails

In partnership with the EDSD Creation Care Community, Sacred Trails provides the opportunity to hike and pray in God's creation. With four hikes offered around our diocese, participants are invited to pick the time and difficulty level that works best for them. Great for youth groups, families, young adults, and anyone with a love of the great outdoors - Sacred Trails takes discipleship out of our churches and into the wild. This EDSD-grown two-day anti-racism workshop focuses on local history and populations and deals with regional issues and stories. It will take place in-person on May 3 (4-9 pm) & May 4 (9:30 am-4:30 pm) at St. Matthew’s, National City. Registration ends April 29.

Border Ministry Update
With the shuttering of the welcome center in San Diego, Customs and Border Protection are daily dropping off hundreds of asylum seekers at transit centers in the city. Starting Monday, March 11, EDSD’s Border Ministry will be preparing sack lunches every Monday at our diocesan offices from 3:00 to 5:00 pm for migrants who are overnighting at the San Diego Airport waiting for flights.
