FAITH FORMATION

Christian Initiation

Do you desire to make a commitment of faith in the Episcopal Church?

You are invited to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation

or the rites of Reception or Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows

Holy Baptism

Holy Baptism is full initiation into Christ’s Body, the church. Baptism creates a bond which is indissoluble and unrepeatable.

Our church recognizes all baptism performed with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

We do not repeat a baptism that was validly celebrated.

Those who are baptized are thereby admitted to Holy Communion. Baptized infants should receive Holy Communion regularly.

Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows

Confirmation is the renewal of baptismal vows for those baptized at an early age who desire to make their first adult affirmation of faith. It is a sacrament of mature adulthood.

Reception is a renewal of baptismal vows for those who have made a mature affirmation of faith in any other Christian church and who now wish to join the Episcopal Church.

Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows is a renewal of baptismal vows

  • for those who were baptized as adults without laying on of hands by a bishop,
  • for those who have made a mature affirmation of faith but have returned from a lapse of Christian practice,
  • for those concluding a period of personal or pastoral crisis, and
  • for those who are experiencing a new call from God to grow in faith or to begin a new ministry

If you have any questions about these sacraments and/or rites or have a desire to deepen you commitment of faith in the Episcopal Church, please contact Rev. Roger Haenke.

St. John's Prayer Ministries

Prayers and Squares: The Prayer Quilt Ministry

This important ministry brings comfort and healing to many people who are suffering with illness. For information on how to help create prayer quilts, or on how to request a quilt (click here)

Thank You, St. John's and Prayers and Squares

With much gratitude and thanksgiving, I thank you for the gift of a beautiful and exquisite prayer quilt.

When I received a surprise package in the mail today from my brother, I was overwhelmed with emotions to see such a beautiful tangible gift of love, hope and prayers made especially for me. Each tail in the knot of the quilt allows me to feel and say a prayer of thanksgiving and ask for a blessing for that person.

While I have to walk down a path I would prefer not to go, I know I am not walking it alone. The quilt will always be a beautiful reminder to encourage me along this journey and to trust God with all my heart and lean not to my own understanding.

Thank you for providing a comforting way to show God's love to a fellow Christian you have not met. I will always treasure this prayer quilt but most of all cherish everyone who lovingly made this quilt and said a prayer.

Thankfully His,

Mary Lindshield Peterson

Cycle of Prayers for the Church

On Saturday, August 3, 2024, a youth delegation from our diocese embarked on a trip to the Comunidad de Luz in Tijuana. There they are meeting a youth delegation from the Anglican Diocese of Western Mexico. Together they are worshiping in community, explore local cultural sites, and complete service projects for Comunidad de Luz. We invite you to pray for the delegation while they are on their trip.

Holy God, whose glory fills the whole creation,

and whose presence we find wherever we go,

we pray for the youth delegation of our diocese as they travel to Mexico:

Preserve them as they travel; surround them with your loving care;

protect them from every danger;

fill them with curiosity, love, and respect for those they meet;

and bring them in safety to their journey's end;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the clergy and people of St. Andrew's by-the-Sea, San Diego, and the children and teachers of St. Andrew's Preschool.

In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for the Anglican Church of Korea.

In the Military Cycle of Prayer, we pray for USS Stockdale (DDG 106).

Being Prepared: Wildfire Season

By: Jeff Green, EDSD Safety Officer

Wildfires threaten San Diego County year-round but become especially prevalent during these hot, windy Summer and Fall months. Numerous times in the history of our diocese, wildfires have decimated population areas, leaving people without homes, businesses, or anywhere to go–let alone the lives tragically lost.

EDSD’s Diocesan Office stands ready to assist churches in preparing for these troubling times. We have encouraged and assisted churches in developing and implementing multi-purpose Emergency Operations Plans. Every plan includes procedures to prepare for and react to wildfires. Ask your church leadership about the Emergency Operations Plan and what to do in case of an emergency. Being prepared is important and can save lives in a crisis. Read More
