Meet this Summer's Amazing Interns

Two local students are joining my office for the summer and getting professional and civic experience to prepare them in their careers. Please join me in welcoming Runor Pinnock and Alison Chiu!

Alison Chiu

Alison Chiu is a Brentwood resident and recent graduate of Heritage High School. She is an incoming freshman at Columbia University with plans to major in political science and statistics on a pre-law track.

Alison is passionate about public service, legislation, social advocacy, the environment, and education. She has worked at the youth branch of Sustainable Leaders in Action, a nonprofit working to phase out local oil and gas drilling. She has volunteered at Generation UP as the Executive Chief of Policy and Programs and a Policy Director, working directly on education reform issues. Alison was previously a district intern for Senator Steve Glazer, working in both district and local offices.

Alison enjoys a variety of hobbies, including collecting figurines and lace tatting.

Runor Pinnock

Runor Pinnock has lived in Antioch for the past 10 years and is currently a second-year student at the University of Southern California studying sociology with an emphasis on youth and education.

She is passionate about community service, racial advocacy, and equity. Her interests have led her to serve as the Associate Director of the USC Pan-African Student Association, a committee member for the 2024 USC Black Graduation Ceremony, and a regular volunteer with food banks across Los Angeles. Runor has interned twice previously with the City of Antioch—once in the Community Development Department (2021) and again in the Public Safety and Community Resources Department working with unhoused residents (2023).

In her spare time, Runor enjoys reading, baking, cooking, eating out at new restaurants, and crossword puzzles.

All Fireworks are Illegal in Contra Costa County

As we approach July 4, I remind you that all fireworks are illegal in Contra Costa County, even those labeled "safe and sane". Fireworks also create a risk to public safety during the summer fire season.

Con Fire urges anyone observing fireworks being used to report it to their local law enforcement non-emergency line by calling 1-833-885-2021. Con Fire’s Fire Investigation Unit also asks residents to help them fight the dangerous use of illegal fireworks by reporting fireworks sales across the county to the Arson Tip Line at 1-866-50-ARSON.

Share Your Ideas for Improving Transit in Contra Costa County: Win a $100 Clipper Card!

The Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA) is inviting residents and travelers within the county to participate in a survey on transit use. Survey responses will inform the development of an Integrated Transit Plan (ITP) to make public transportation easier to use and more convenient in Contra Costa County.

With improved transit, Contra Costa County will be a more livable, sustainable, and equitable place to live and travel. As recommendations in the ITP are put into place, the public will see many benefits:

  • Better connections to regional services, like BART and Capitol Corridor.
  • Improvements for increased speed and reliability.
  • Enhancements to improve riders’ transit experience.

The Contra Costa County TRUTH Act Community Forum to discuss civil immigration enforcement activities is scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 23, during the regular Board of Supervisors meeting.

"The TRUTH Act forum in one way we can support our immigrant communities to ensure they feel safe and empowered," stated Board Chair, District 5 Supervisor Federal Glover. New Contra Costa Youth Stabilization Unit Opens for Children and Teens Experiencing Psychiatric Emergencies

Children and adolescents having psychiatric emergencies now have their own standalone 24/7 behavioral health crisis stabilization space in Contra Costa County.

The new Contra Costa Youth Stabilization Unit, which opened June 24, will serve people ages 6-17 for the first 24 hours of a diagnosed psychiatric emergency when they are considered a danger to themselves or others.

Until now, youth in the county experiencing psychiatric emergencies were treated alongside adults in the Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) unit at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. Children and teens will now be able to receive developmentally appropriate emergency psychiatric care in a dedicated space designed for pediatric patients that is separate from the adult PES.
