Giving - What’s in it for you? | By CMA Foundation Associate Director Paula Cosby

Giving is a seemingly simple act. But is it, really?

Giving gifts (whether it’s a gift of your time, your talent, or your treasure) allows us to express our thoughtfulness and creativity and provides a sense of fulfillment as we form bonds and foster relationships. Research has shown that the act of giving activates the brain’s reward centers, prompting the release of dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. Simply put, giving creates positive emotions that contribute to increased overall well-being and promotes a sense of happiness, connectedness, and attachment.

Whether we give because it makes us feel connected to something bigger than ourselves, or because we simply have a selfless concern for the wellbeing of others - helping others feels good and is good for you. Charitable giving to improve the quality of life for those around you boosts your health and mental well-being by improving self-esteem, a positive outlook on life, a sense of purpose, and it also reduces the risk of depression (Cone Health, RUSH).

Giving is hard-wired into who we are as human beings. As you consider your final year-end contributions remember the amount you give doesn’t matter; the act itself has been proven to do you good.

Consider the community good the CMA Foundation is creating for Central Ohioans.
