The Lingering Impact of COVID-19 on Physician Burnout

A conversation with Dr. Joseph Gastaldo

"You know, as physicians, we don't have special powers, especially when it comes to resiliency, I think we are all wired to be overachievers and stoic.”

The CMA's Communication Specialist, Destiney Davis, sat down with Infectious Disease physician, Joseph Gastaldo, to talk about the challenges doctors face even years out from the COVID-19 pandemic. Check it out!

Medicare Rates Threatened for 2024

Patient access to care may be reduced if the recently announced Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) final plans for physician payment schedules are realized. CMS took action that resulted in a 3.4% reduction in Medicare's physician payments for 2024.

Congress has a chance to adjust funding and prevent this from happening; however, if Congress doesn't act before the end of the year, these proposed cuts will go into effect.

The AMA and other physician organizations are asking doctors to weigh in directly with elected officials in Washington.

Learn Difference of the Three Types of Medicare Wellness Visits

Medicare covers 3 types of wellness visits that provide opportunities to promote patient health, disease screening and early detection, and advance care planning:

  • Initial preventive physical exam, offered once per lifetime
  • Initial annual wellness visit (AWV), offered once per lifetime
  • Subsequent AWVs, offered annually

Here are a few simple steps to help you reduce the number of denied claims and to gain efficiencies in the time and resources spent on delivering these visits:

  1. Check patient eligibility on myCGS. Billing the wrong visit or at the wrong time can result in a denied claim; checking myCGS can help avoid denied claims.
  2. Team up with clinical staff who can perform wellness visits. This brief training video is a step-by-step guide for clinical staff on how to perform these visits.
  3. Learn more about Medicare wellness visits. This printable flyer provides an outline of each visit, its requirements, and billing guidance.
