Scripture Readings for September 8

Philippians 2:5-11

5 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. 9 Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Luke 10:38-42; 11:27-28

38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me.” 41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. 42 But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” 27

And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!” 28 But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Miscommunication vs Communication = Misunderstanding

“I thought they were being rude”

In the video below, Father Oleksa explained to me that I misperceived what I thought was “rude” behavior being addressed to me personally. I failed to understand what it means to be a member of a multi-cultural community. Much to my surprise I learned my cultural bias, which I had been blind to, actually put me in a position to be one the who was “rude”.  For this blindness, and my being rude, I ask for your forgiveness.

I also ask that you watch the below lecture. It is my hope that by watching Father Oleksa you will be spared my ignorance, that the video will help us understand each other more, and that within that understanding we can enjoy more Christian love for each other.

Father Oleksa describes simply and beautifully how our thoughts, beliefs and attitudes are often hidden from us. He addresses how the culture we grow up in has an effect on our tempo, the intonation of our speech, the distance we stand from one another, our styles of politeness, rituals, etc. All these nuances have a profound effect on our communication styles.

My hope is that Father Oleksa’s talk will enhance our multi-cultural community’s ability to understand our different forms of being “polite” and help us communicate more effectively.  This I believe will help us worship our Lord in greater unity.

In Christ’s love,

Samantha Cath

A Note from Ss Peter & Paul Mission in Culpeper

We have been blessed these almost three years to have space at a local Episcopal Church for a very nominal cost. They have been so welcoming to us to use their Parish Hall on Saturdays.

However, it is time to find a space that we can use on Sundays.

With this change, we hope to bring Orthodoxy to many more in Culpeper, Va.

With this aim in mind, we are asking for donations to help cover rent, any renovations, the buying of our own furniture and other expenses related to such a move.

If you decide to help with growing the Orthodox Mission, you can make a donation on the diocesan website. Please select Ss Peter & Paul Mission, VA (second from the bottom of the drop-down list) and follow the instructions. If you prefer, you can make out a check payable to "Ss Peter and Paul Orthodox Mission" and send it c/o Peter and Helen Evans, 13217 Lovett Lane, Boston, Va 22713.

Of course, all donations are tax-deductible and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your donations and your prayers.

Sincerely,

Peter and Helen Evans

Progress since last week's post: Our team now numbers 7 trekkers walking, swimming or riding stationary bikes. As of September 4th, we have raised $4,270 for OCMC, 61% of our team goal of $7,000.

Please Pray For Missions

  • For strength and stamina as missionaries encounter antagonistic spiritual forces (Ephesians 6:10–18).
  • That people will resist Satan’s plans to obstruct the spread of the gospel (James 4:7)
  • That God’s Word will indeed spread rapidly and be honored wherever it goes

Hear Inspirational Tales from Two of Our Trekkers

"I spent 15 months in an orthopedic boot from March 2023 to May 2024 and with crutches too. I had major foot surgery in November 2023, which kept me fully off my feet for 2 months - a much longer recovery than my previous surgery in February 2020 for my other foot. It's all linked to a genetic bone disease I have which can have nasty and painful flare ups. Now, thank God, I am able to walk and swim again, even if still doing physical therapy once a week".

Her stats:

  • Miles walked - 2.5
  • Meters swum - 1,400m (which is shy of 1 mile by 200 meters, but she says, "I hope to get there and more by the end of this week")

Another team member tells her story of trekking while suffering from long-term Covid-19:

Addictions Recovery Support Network News

At St. Nicholas we care about you. We want to help you find the resources

At St. Nicholas we care about you and want to help you find the resources that will relieve the pain of addiction or co-addiction

This is why we have created the Addictions Recovery Support Network (ARSN). The ARSN recognizes Science/Counseling, 12 Steps and 12 Traditions Recovery Programs and Religion are separate entities. The ARSN Ministry also recognizes that these entities are bridgeable and compatible, when it comes to achieving and maintain relief from addiction or co-addition.

The ARSN Ministry is not a 12 Steps and 12 Traditions program. We are Orthodox Christians who stand ready to offer resources and solutions to the problem of achieving and maintaining sobriety. Our ministry is open to all persons who are looking for resources.

To learn more, pick up an ARSN Brochure from the Recovery Rack located in the coffee hour hall, text or join us on the monthly ARSN Zoom meeting.

The monthly meeting is held on Zoom, on the last Monday of each month from 7:00 to 8:15 PM. There is freedom from addiction/co-addiction, and there is joy in recovery. Join us.

Remembering Anna Mayberry

Anna Marchuk Mayberry, daughter of Michael Marchuk and Eva Beca, fell asleep in the Lord on February 25, 2023 at Spring Arbor Assisted Living in Frederick, MD. She is survived by her two daughters Tina Parrish and Hope Worley (Don Worley). She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Anna was predeceased by her sister Helen Fanning of Hyattsville, MD, her brother Vladimir Marchuk of Edison, NJ and her grandson Timothy Parrish of Poolesville, MD.

Anna graduated from Bound Brook High School, Bound Brook, NJ in 1935 and received her BS in education from the New Jersey State Teachers College at Trenton, NJ, class of 1939. She received her Master’s degree from American University in Washington, D.C. Anna was an elementary school teacher in Manville, New Jersey and then in Montgomery County, Maryland until her retirement in 1979.

Anna liked to travel and go to the beach which she did often throughout her life. She also enjoyed all kinds of needlework, crossword puzzles, and jigsaw puzzles and was a voracious reader. Anna was also a founding member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Cathedral and War Memorial Shrine, in Washington D.C. where she sang in the choir and attended services.

In addition to her faithful attendance to sing at liturgical services on any day of the week, Anna served as the secretary of the choir. She set up a filing system for the large sheet music collection used for the full schedule of services at the Cathedral. She retrieved the relevant music for services with her knowledge of the rubrics and maintained the system that remains today. In her love for the choir Anna kept a scrapbook of the numerous concerts which the choir sang from the 1960’s to 1980’s under the direction of Nicholas V. Borodulia. A list of departed choir members with corresponding obituaries is complete from 1960 to the present thanks to her diligence. In the many years before email lists to contact choir members, the choir secretary and two helpers used the telephone to relay messages, often in record time to sing at funerals. Anna faithfully performed all these duties into her late 80’s.

Assistant choir directors who began serving in 1971 can thank Anna Mayberry for her support and encouragement to continue and improve their work. Anna’s additional church activities included a longtime membership in the Orthodox social club FOCA (Fellowship of Orthodox Christians.) and work at the used book sale tent for the Annual Bazaar.

May her memory be Eternal!

Parishioner Memorial Project

Each month we hope to highlight the memory of a departed parishioner or friend of St. Nicholas Cathedral. If you have a loved one or friend that you would like to have featured, please send a short biography with their contributions to our Cathedral life, no matter how great or small - with a digital photo if available - to Lisamik56@gmail.com with the words "Memory Eternal" in the subject line. Please include the date and year of death, as we will try to highlight the departed around an anniversary.
