Mizell Senior Center provides over 145,000 Meals on Wheels throughout the Coachella Valley every year. Summer is very difficult. With temperatures sometimes reaching 120 degrees, frail, homebound seniors depend on this program in order to eat. During the Summer months, donations for this program are few and far between . . . but, we still are preparing and serving meals for 500 - 600 seniors each day from Palm Springs and Desert Hot Springs to the Salton Sea over 7 delivery routes. Personal Protection for Seniors at Mizell Senior Center
A Free Seminar on Personal Protection
Join us at Mizell Senior Center on Tuesday, July 18th from 12:30AM
to 2:00PM for a seminar focusing on Personal Protection for Seniors. At this free seminar, practical concepts in personal protection will be discussed and demonstrated. Learn about how walking canes and common household objects can be used to protect yourself and your loved ones - in the home, in your car, and in public settings. You will learn to avoid harm, and, if necessary, respond to and overcome a threat. Our instructor is Andrew Sheldon who has 30 years experience in security and law enforcement and has trained security officers as well as the public. Please wear comfortable clothing and sneakers. Free Hearing Screenings at Mizell
From Hear USA - Next Screening July 20
Mizell Business Partner Hear USA will be providing FREE on-site hearing screenings every third Thursday of the month for members of Mizell Senior Center. The next screening is scheduled for Thursday, July 20 from 10:00AM to Noon. Hearing screenings take about 7 - 10 minutes per individual. Life Story Writing at Mizell - Advanced
Become the Author You Have Always Wanted to Be
Someone once said that every man's life is worth a book. Have you ever thought about writing your life story? Mizell Senior Center has an Advanced Life Story Writing Class on Tuesdays beginning August 1st and continuing through September 5, 2017. The class will meet from 9:00AM to Noon and is open ONLY to those with Life Story writing experience. This six week class will help you continue to develop and discuss our life stories. Remember: If you can talk, you can write. So, gather those old pictures and mementos and get started on your memoir. Let your grandchildren learn how you walked to school in the rain and snow, your first bicycle, catching fireflies in a jar, and playing kick the can. The class is taught by Marge Zapala. Class size is limited to 10 for more individualized instruction. Cost for the class is $35.00 for members and $55.00 for non-members. Be sure to bring a pen and a notebook to the class. Mizell Documentary Film Salon Presents
Art of the Western World - In Our Time
The Mizell Senior Center Documentary Film Salon is presenting
the final installment of Michael Wood's Art of the Western World -Into the 20th Century on Wednesday, July 12th at 12:30PM at Mizell. The center of the art world moved to New York, home to abstract expressionism. Artists reacted to postwar society with a bewildering array of styles, and postmodernism mined the past for ideas. This episode features Jackson Pollock, Jasper Johns, Rauschenber, and Warhol. This series is one of the finest treatments of Western Art and Art History that is available in multimedia with Michael Woods as host and guide. It is a series that appeals to both experienced art historians, and persons who want an introduction to art history. Bernard "Butch" Epps, MFA will facilitate a guided discussion after the screening. Do you enjoy listening to some of the classic Jazz and Dance Music from the Golden Age of Music? Are you a retired musician, but still like to play your instrument, but don't know where to go? Whether you are a listener or player, the Jazz/Jam Session at Mizell Senior is the place to be. Join Dick Broadie and Friends to listen or play every Wednesday morning starting at 10:00AM. If you play, don't worry if you are a bit "rusty". This is a great place to meet new friends and play your favorite instrument and enjoy the music. Do you like dancing? This is also the place for you. So, come on down and listen, dance or Jam with the Jazz/Jam session at Mizell . . . you will be glad you did. Cost is FREE for Mizell Members and $5.00 for guests.

July Lunch Club is at Elmer's Restaurant in Palm Springs
The popular Mizell Lunch Club's next meeting is on Wednesday, July 26 at 11:30AM at the Palm Springs favorite: Elmer's Restaurant located at 1030 E. Palm Canyon Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. The Mizell Lunch Club visits a new restaurant every month. Mizell members, visitors, volunteers, and family members are all welcome to attend. this is a great way to try a new restaurant and meet new friends. Help Support Meals on Wheels
Aunt Betty's Attic is truly the Best Little Thrift Store in the Valley and we need your donations of Summer wear for the upcoming Summer season. We are also looking for housewares, books, newer electronics, kitchen gadgets, and Vintage/Collectibles. You can drop-off your donations at the Mizell front desk. We will also help you unload your car. We will even go to your home to pick up larger items or large quantities of items. To make a donation, call our store manager, Sandy Milder at 760-323-5689 x111.
Located within the Mizell Senior Center building, the store features some of the best deals you will find in any other thrift store. Aunt Betty's is open Monday through Friday from 9:00AM to 4:00PM. We also have donations of high-end designer clothing such as Brooks Brothers, Gucci, Michael Kors, Liz Claiborne, and Chico's just to name a few. We also feature household items, artwork, glassware, small appliances . . . and so much more. You will have to stop by regularly because we are always featuring new stock and items sell fast. We also accept donations. All proceeds from sales at Aunt Betty's Attic support our Valley-wide Meals on Wheels program and other programs and services at Mizell Senior Center.

Have you tried lunch at Mizell's Cafe 480? You can now enjoy our improved menu freshly cooked each day at Mizell. Our Program through the Riverside County Office on Aging is for those ages 60 and above. You only need to complete a simple enrollment form. Rather than charging $5.00 for lunch we are suggesting a donation of $3.00. Your donation will help ensure continued High Quality Lunches and service to more people. You can still enjoy the best lunch deal in the area and then participate in one of our many programs.
Lunch is $5.00 for those under age 60 or those not wishing to fill out the required information form. Here is the menu for next week:

Join In With This Active Social Club
Widows and Widowers meets every Monday at Mizell Senior Center
at 10:00AM. This active Social Club is for individuals who are ready to begin exploring new opportunities in life. In addition to the weekly meetings at Mizell, the group often meets for lunch, pot-lucks and outings to remain active and social. There are also two happy hour mixers each month on the second and fourth Wednesday at various locations. Non-alcoholic drinks are always available at the mixers. The July meetings will continue with:

Picasso and Braque Go To the Movies looks at the collision between film and art at the turn of the 20th Century and helps us to realize cinema's continuing influence on the art of our time. With narration by Martin Scorsese and interviews with art scholars and artists including Chuck Close, Julian Schnabel and Eric Fischl. You won't want to miss this unique film. Improve My Balance - New Classes & Schedule
Keep Up Your Exercise and Help Prevent a Devastating Fall
Check out the new class schedule for Improve My Balance. During the Summer months, the Wednesday class will be combined with our Tuesday afternoon exercise class for a Tuesday afternoon Improve My Balance class. Do you find it difficult to stand for a long period of time? Is your
balance less than it used to be? Do you tire easily by performing a simple task? Then join us for our one hour intensive balance and coordination class taught by Dr. Marc Eisman, D.C. and Stephen Matthews, D.C. This class uses specialized equipment and methods based on evidence based programs that are globally recognized. Improve My Balance Classes meet Wednesday and Friday mornings from 10:00AM to 10:45AM and Tuesday afternoons from 4:00PM to 4:45PM . The Improve My Balance Classes are a part of our comprehensive exercise and overall Fall Prevention programming. Cost for the classes are 10 sessions for $40 for Members and $60 for non-members. After 10 sessions, two are free. Drop-ins are welcome: $4.00 for Members and $6.00 for Non-members.. Be prepared to have fun, be challenged and Improve Your Balance. Tai Chi for Health
Ongoing Classes at Mizell Senior Center
Mizell Senior Center has regular Tai Chi classes led by Tai Chi Master,
 Neal Arida, who teaches the Yang Family Long For 108 along with Qigong Organ Exercises. You can learn and practice these ancient Chinese arts of health restoration and self defense, by combining breath control with rhythmic, slow-moving choreographed body movements. We offer two levels of classes:
Beginning Tai Chi on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00PM. This class begins with learning standing postures, breath control and body movement. Exercises will be tailored to your abilities and limitations.
Intermediate/Advanced Tai Chi offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:00PM moves to the next level where you learn to enhance vitality, improve overall health,reverse aging, clear your mind and lift your spirits through Qigong. Health benefits of Tai Chi include improved balance, improved circulation, the lowering of blood pressure, increased flexibility, better balance and enhanced breathing. Classes are $35/month for members and $65/month for non-members. Drop-in rates are $10.00 for members and $15.00 for non-members. Friday's from 10:00AM to 11:30AM. You are invited to come and enjoy the fine sound of Ricky playing a variety of old popular songs with a New Orleans flavor. Ricky has been playing the clarinet for over 50 years and is well known around town and surrounding cities. He has played various gig's for many years and studied his clarinet after the late great Pete Fountain. Don't miss this opportunity to experience Ricky's unique artistic style. This program is FREE to Mizell Members.

We are already half-way through July . . . it seems that our hot summer is moving fast. Be sure to enjoy some of our classes and activities and stay COOL at Mizell instead of staying home and using your own air conditioning. You can save money and have fun by coming to Mizell during these hot days. If you are doing Summer Cleaning and looking to clean your closet or garage, be sure to bring your donations to Aunt Betty's Attic. It is an easy way to support our Meals on Wheels Program and another way to help out Mizell. We can keep you busy with our always changing calendar of classes and activities. You can keep active in our ongoing Improve My Balance Classes, take our Life Story Writing Class, or learn Tai Chi. You can stay COOL, while you listen to some music, take in a documentary film or take a Yoga class. Check out our lunch menu or attend the Widows or Widowers social club on Monday. If you enjoy film, we have a weekly film series complete with popcorn.
