Advent's Vision
We are Advent Lutheran Church. As diverse children of God, we strive to be the embodiment of that which God wants all people on earth to be. We love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. We love our neighbor as ourselves, and express this love in service to others.
By accepting God's gift of grace through our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, we are reconciled to God forever.

Thanks overdue

Jersey Mike's Sunday!
Please consider supporting the 812 Youth Mission Trip fund by taking your family to eat after church to Jersey Mikes (by Kohls/Food Lion on 29) this Sunday Feb 26, 12 - 4pm. Jersey Mikes donates a portion of all purchases made during our timeframe. The food is delicious and you can't beat dining with your Advent family! See you there!
Little Free Library: Loving Literacy
Maybe you've noticed and wondered about the beautiful wooden structure made by Harrison Luttman in the Gathering Space. It's Advent's version of the Little Free Library community effort, with its inviting Peace Pole reaching out to all. At some point the Social Ministry board hopes it will sit outside by the Wubben-Smith house, but for now it's open for business inside our church. Reading is a great gift from God, so celebrate literacy by bringing in books you'd like to discard and picking up any that strike your interest!
You've heard about the Free Store. On Sundays for the past few years, you've met many of our Free Store friends. Maybe you know Advent serves lunch there each month. Even though you've heard about The Free Store, you might be wondering where it is, or what they "do"? Mark your calendar for Saturday February 25th and Saturday March 18th from 11:30 - 1:30 to join us and serve lunch and find out for yourself. Questions? Please contact Caroline Grubb grubb@pipeline.com
Director of Music Ministry Update:
A Music Ministry Task Force has completed its work to put together a job description of the "musts" for Advent's new Director of Music Ministry following Annette Nolan's retirement in April. Thanks to Rob Beyersdorf, Madeline DeGrace, Susan Hartsell, Glenn Kelly, Diane Large, Staci Noel, and Carolyn Osborne for doing an excellent job in this very important first step in the process.
Advent Church Council has elected a Search Committee to identify and select the best candidates for this position. They are Rob Beyersdorf, chairperson; Jennifer Frisina, Gerry Osborne, Alli Poovey, Glenn Kelly, Tony Fitzgerald and Tracy Heberlig. Others currently involved in the music program will also provide input as needed. Please keep this group in your prayers as they discern the person called to lead our music over the next phase of Advent's ministry and growth.
Tables Extraordinaire Luncheon
All Advent members (men and women) and their friends and family are welcome to join us for a catered lunch and program on Saturday, March 18, noon - 2:00 p.m. in Orinson Hall.
The program highlights the growing problem of 'Human Trafficking.' The speaker is Hannah Arrowood, Exec. Director of Present Age Ministries, a local 501(c)3 agency that rescues and assists girls (ages 12-18) who are victims of the sex trade in our Charlotte community.
Reservations are required - the deadline to sign up is February 28. The cost for this event is $8.00 per person. To ensure your reserved place at a table and enable us to give an accurate count for food, please pay in advance: make checks payable to Advent Lutheran Church, note on memo line: Tables Extraordinaire. Carolyn Osborne is accepting reservations and payments. For additional info, contact Mona Ingolia monaingolia@gmail.com or Carolyn Osborne: 704-792-9577
Wear Red on Sunday
February is National Heart Month. Please wear something red to church on Sunday, Feb. 26th. And stop by the display in the Gathering Space to pick up information on keeping your heart healthy.
Live Abundantly Advent's Health Ministry Team
Item of the Month for February
We are venturing away from assisting the Food Pantry this month to address needs of the young girls who are victims of sex trafficking that we learned about from the Present Age Ministries speaker during worship on January 15. The Tables Extraordinaire event on March 18 will further support this ministry. We are requesting full-size shampoos, deodorants, lotions, toothpaste, and other toiletry items to put into the tote bags they receive when they are rescued. Help them know that there are people who care enough to provide this small token of comfort and kindness.
Many thanks to our church family for designating Advent through Amazon Smiles! We have received notification that $32.10 is being deposited into our bank account from the AmazonSmile Foundation as a result transactions between October 1 and December 31, 2016. For those of you who order through Amazon but haven't yet switched to Amazon Smiles, please do so as soon as possible. On your first visit to AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), you need to select a charitable organization to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. The selection is remembered and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation to Advent. This is at NO cost to you! The key is to remember to do all your shopping at Smile.Amazon.Com to keep those donations flowing. If you have questions, please feel free to contact the church office or Pam Rhynes.
Delegates for Synod Assembly: The NC Lutheran Synod Assembly will be held in Greensboro on June 2 to 3, 2017. If you would like to be nominated as a delegate, please contact Abby Bostian, abostian@carolina.rr.com . Advent may have one male and one female delegate, a youth or young adult representative, and one person of color. If more than one candidate volunteers to fill each position, the congregation will elect the delegates to represent them. Our delegates in 2016 were Alli Poovey, L.D. Shockley, Brooke Summerour and Pam Rhynes, along with Pr. Ward.
Advent 50th Anniversary:
We are middle-aged! Advent's first worship service was an Easter Sunrise service on April 14, 1968, so we'll soon be 50 years old. We want to celebrate! If you would like to be part of the planning committee for this celebration, please let us know! Contact Abby Bostian (abostian@carolina.rr.com) or Tim Caldwell (iamta2z@aol.com).

Nurture, Support & Fellowship
Can you crochet a "Granny Square"?
Advent's Prayer Team is seeking folks to help out in creating our Prayer Squares. It's a real easy pattern to learn, if you don't already know, and takes minutes to make!
Hearing assistance equipment has now been added to the Sanctuary sound system, and will be implemented, as soon as potential users have been registered, and training completed. If you would like to try out one of these personal receivers, during a Sunday service, please contact Gerry Osborne at (704) 792-9577 or scandia@ctc.net.
Wubben-Smith House Available for Use:
Groups (such as board meetings, Bible studies, small groups) which wish to use the House may immediately start reserving space by contacting Ann Schado (
aschado@adventlu.org or 704-549-1555). Arrangements will be made to give your group access at the time needed.
The first bedroom on the right will continue to be set up as a chapel. If you want a quiet, worshipful place for prayer and reflection, please let Ann know when you will be there.
Line Dancing Classes Continue
Tuesdays, 7-8pm
Come join the fun we are having with Line Dancing classes each Tuesday night in the gym, 7-8pm. Cost is $6 per person per class. Dances are repeated so there are multiple chances to learn each one. Members and non-members are welcome.
Communicate and Connect: Join the closed "Advent Friends" Facebook group to stay abreast of events and see photos.
If you would like to receive occasional important Advent news via text message on your phone, please text 'Advent' to 96362 or scan the QR code on the notices posted around the building. (Please note: you must be at least 16 years of age to participate in the program. You may receive up to five (5) text messages per month for which you may be charged by your mobile phone carrier. You may opt out of this service at any time by texting 'stop' to 96362 or by emailing aschado@adventlu.org.)
Please join the Health and Wellness Ministry every month for a walk on the Greenway. This is a great opportunity for Fresh Air and Fellowship.
We will meet after the second service on the First Sunday of every month. You can make your walk as short or as long as you want. We will meet in the Harris Teeter parking lot across from the Greenway Entrance at 12:15. Please bring a water bottle.
We will have drawings for some goodies of you commit early. Please let Jennie Henderson know if you plan on joining us to be entered into the drawing: jhendersonfit@gmail.com or 704-962-6930
AMAZON SHOPPING? USE "SMILE"
Don't forget - when shopping on Amazon, access the site through
http://smile.amazon.com/ch/56-1182420 , and simply do all of your Amazon on-line ordering through Smile.Amazon. Amazon will donate 0.5% of what you buy to Advent - not much, but if you're shopping anyway with Amazon, why not use Smile. Every penny will be used in service to God and His people.

Outreach
If you wish to financially aid those devastated by wars or natural disasters, such as Hurricane Matthew, the flooding in Louisiana and the earthquake in Italy, Lutheran Disaster Relief will directly reach the victims. To donate, go to
www.elca.org/disaster.
You can donate to provide aid in the area of greatest need or to a need you specify.
A heartfelt thank you to all 125 or so people attending the annual June and Mabel Porter Chili Supper sponsored by Social Ministry on Sat. Feb. 4! Pat & Glenn Kelly were again the cooks of some mighty fine chili. Proceeds went to Helping Hearts Creche, the project that supports needy preschool children in India. Betsy Dailey presented a touching slideshow that opened many hearts to contribute approximately $2000 to the cause. A quilt made from CROP Walk tee shirts and sold by silent auction netted $100. A Thrivent grant was obtained to offset some of the cost. Thanks to Keith Wassum's coordination efforts, many attending finished the evening by going to the UNCC basketball game. A fun night of food and fellowship for all!
Another Way to Help the Food Pantry
Do you shop at Harris Teeter? Did you know there's a special way beyond having a VIC (Very Important Customer) card to get discounted and sometimes FREE items from them? Just think how easy it would be to donate the free food items to the Food Pantry! Wouldn't cost you a cent to help our hungry neighbors! Even though there is a designated food item each month, any food - any time - is welcome. Go online to sign up: https://www.harristeeter.com/user/#/app/user/register
Room In The Inn continues
There are many ways to help shelter our neighbors on Monday nights through Mar 27. Contact Cheri Strickland for more info (cstrickland@adventlu.org).
