BELLEFIELD WEEKLY

June 14, 2024 | Issue #216

Dear Bellefield Family,

Earlier this week, I spent some time clearing out space in a filing cabinet that had become overstuffed. (Exciting stuff, I know.) If you've ever done anything like this, then you know how it goes and what you find: a lot of files you no longer need, some things you'd forgotten exist, and a few items that you'd been trying to locate but had given up hope of locating.

One rather full recycling bin later, I'd created enough space to begin storing new files--many of which I may not see again until I re-purge the cabinet a few years down the road and wonder anew at why I kept what I did for as long as I did.

In Psalm 130, the psalmist says,

"Out of the depths I cry to you, LORD;

Lord, hear my voice.

Let your ears be attentive

to my cry for mercy.

If you, LORD, kept a record of sins,

Lord, who could stand?

But with you, there is forgiveness,

so that we can, with reverence, serve you."

--Psalm 130:1-4 (NIV)

If the Lord "kept a record of sins", then there would be none who could stand before him. Even as the psalmist cries out for mercy, he also celebrates the fact that "there is forgiveness" because of the Lord's mercy and grace.

Paul uses similar language when he says that God has "forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This is set aside nailing it to the cross" (Colossians 2:13-14 ESV). God does not file away nor simply forget about our record of sins/debt; he actively cancels it by "nailing it to the cross". Through the death of Jesus, the just judgment against our sins has been handed down. Therefore, our record has been expunged and our case file cleared.

The good news of the gospel is that God is not holding on to old records nor keeping on file the things that ought to be discarded. When we cry to the Lord from out of the depths, he is attentive to our pleas for mercy. There is forgiveness with the Lord, and knowing that frees us to serve him with reverence and joy.

I pray that you can be refreshed with God's grace this week!

Grace and peace,

Josh
