STANDING IN SOLIDARITY WITH ISRAEL

If you’re traveling to Israel or planning a visit in the coming months, you can make a meaningful contribution with the gift of your time. Please visit the Israel Page of our website for information on VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES in Israel.

Today marks 306 days in captivity.

Each Shabbat, members of the Downtown Jewish Community join for a peaceful walk around Washington Square and Union Square Park at 2:30 pm and carry pictures of the hostages held in Gaza to bring awareness to their plight. The group meets at the NYU Bronfman Center, 7 East 10 Street, walks through Washington Square and up University Place and then walks around and exits Union Square Park. Shabbat is a time to pause, connect and reflect,. As long as our family in Israel are suffering, we cannot rest. We hope you will join us on Saturday.

Tisha B'av Services

Tisha B’Av Services

Monday - Tuesday, August 12-13

Tisha B’Av (the 9th day of the month of Av) marks the day when the Babylonians destroyed the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE and also when the Romans burned down the Second Temple in 70 CE. To commemorate this sad day on the Jewish calendar, Tisha B’Av was designated a full fast day, although one is permitted to work.

On the evening of Tisha B’Av, Jews gather to hear the mournful chanting of the Biblical book of Lamentations (Eicha), an ancient dirge written by the prophet Jeremiah after the destruction of the First Temple. Congregants often sit on the floor of a darkened room like mourners. This year, Erev Tisha B’Av services take place on Monday, August 12 from 8:00 – 9:00 pm.

We will hold morning services for Tisha B’Av on Tuesday, August 13 at 9:00 am and mincha/ma’ariv services (at which tallit and tefillin are worn) on Tuesday evening at 7:45 pm followed by a light meal to break the fast.

Brotherhood Cemetery Project / Drivers Needed

The Social Action Committee will continue its longstanding project of taking people to area cemeteries to visit graves of loved ones in the season of the High Holidays

if there are sufficient volunteer drivers.

Individuals who have not driven previously and want to perform this mitzvah this year, as well as past drivers who can drive this year and who have not emailed Arthur Plutzer that response should contact Manda in the office (mhegardt@ brotherhoodsynagogue.org; 212-674-5750). We will continue to take non-members, relatives and friends of members when possible, but we are directed to prioritize members of the congregation. Individuals who want to go to a cemetery in New Jersey, Westchester, and Long Island should contact Manda and provide the cemetery and your telephone, email, and whether you can go during a weekday or only on Sunday.

We look forward to continuing this tradition of mitzvah and service started at the request of our founding Rabbi Irving Block.

On October 8, French philosopher Bernard-Henri Lévy flew to Israel to report on Hamas' massacre, bear witness to the unprecedented pogroms the terrorists had committed and stand in solidarity with the Jewish people. Then, within weeks, he watched in despair as the massacre became a “detail” in the global consciousness and antisemitism cloaked as anti-Zionism erupted across the world. After listening to mobs demand “ceasefire now” without the release of the hostages and protestors and governments insist that October 7 be seen within a wider “context,” Lévy knew he had to weigh in on how the victim had been transmogrified into the victimizer. Using his favorite weapon, his pen, he wrote his 48th book, Solitude d’Israël (Israel Alone).

The French intellectual returns to The Temple Emanu-El Streicker Cultural Center to talk about the global responses to October 7; how they reflect a new strain of the oldest hatred in the world; the role played – and profits reaped - by Iran, Russia, radical Islamist groups, and even Turkey and China; and what’s at stake both for Israel and for the world. Lévy will be in conversation with Alana Newhouse, editor-in-chief of Tablet Magazine.

Lévy and Newhouse will then be joined by a group of Jewish university students, including Yola Ashkenazie, Bella Ingber and Shabbos Kestenbaum, who braved the chaotic anti-Israeli protests after October 7 to discuss what this new generation faces, how they have coped and what must be done to combat this new antisemitism.

Bernard-Henri Lévy is a philosopher, writer, director of eight films and staunch defender of democracy and humanism against totalitarianism and fascism. For half a century, Lévy has reported on the wars from the frontline of Israel and on the world’s “forgotten wars.” He participated in various peace plans in Israel and beyond.

Names for Prayer for Healing

Submitting Names for Healing Prayer

When someone is ill, we traditionally say a Misheberach, a special prayer for healing during Shabbat morning services when Rabbi Alder will read the names of those who are ill. If you would like the name of someone mentioned during the Misheberach prayer, please let Rabbi Alder know by email. Ideally, we would use the person's Hebrew name and that of their mother; if this is not known, then we can use their English name. May God send healing to all those in need.
