A Message from Pastor Tom Hallberg

Dear HUMC Family,

Mark 6:6b-13

Then he went about among the villages teaching. 7He called the twelve and began to send them out two by two, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits. 8He ordered them to take nothing for their journey except a staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belts; 9but to wear sandals and not to put on two tunics. 10He said to them, ‘Wherever you enter a house, stay there until you leave the place. 11If any place will not welcome you and they refuse to hear you, as you leave, shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.’ 12So they went out and proclaimed that all should repent. 13They cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them.

Following Jesus is an active undertaking. As Christians, we seek to live a life in union with God.

In this scripture, Jesus sent his disciples out and tells them to stay where they are welcomed. This means that we are called to trust that God is leading others to receive the Gospel. They will know our hearts. When we are welcomed by those to whom we are ministering, our peace is left behind us (as mentioned in Matthew 10), and where we are not welcomed, we are to shake the dust off of our feet.

In our daily lives, we may not literally need to stay in other people's houses as we live as an ambassador for Christ, but we can still learn from this scripture.

We learn that we will "succeed" and we will "fail." Some people will be open to the message of Christ, and others will not be. That goes with the territory. Are we brave enough to be willing to fail?

Being a Christian means that we give up on certainty. Ironically, this certainty never existed in the first place - it only came from our desire for control. Neither you nor I can be certain of tomorrow...The only certainty we have is the Love of God.

As you live in this world as a disciple of Jesus, you may feel discouraged. But take heart - We are in this mission to make disciples together!
