March 8, 2024

Dear Residents -

March is one of my favorite months. Not only do we see the first day of spring and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, but it is also Irish American Heritage Month and Women’s History Month. And saving the best for last, it is my husband and mother’s birthdays! A great month all around.

At the Town Board meeting this week, the Town Board officially declared March as Irish American Cultural Month in Orangetown and presented proclamations to the honorees of the Rockland County Ancient Order of Hibernians and their counterpart, the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. Special thanks to Dermot Moore for escorting the honorees in to the sound of bagpipes, bringing some traditional Irish culture to the night.

The Town Board then went on to recognize Catholic Sisters Week by presenting proclamations to Sr. Mary Flood of the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt and Sr. Irene Ellis of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill. Catholic Sisters Week was established in 2014 as part of the National Women's History Month and to raise awareness of the vital contributions of religious women.

And another favorite of mine - the Orangetown Police Department held the annual Youth Court Graduation Ceremony during the Police Commission meeting that same night. Congratulations to the students who graduated, and thanks to everyone who makes this program possible. Being the parent of two children who went through the program, I truly appreciate the value it brings to our community.

Unfortunately, the weather this weekend is expected to be wet from Saturday evening into Sunday morning. Personally speaking, I would rather it rain this weekend than on the parade next weekend. With that said, I will be marching rain or shine!

Don’t forget to set your clocks back an hour before you go to bed on Saturday night, and have a great weekend everyone.

Stay safe everyone!

Regards –

ATTENTION RESIDENTS

Orangetown Police are warning residents to be aware of the driveway paving/sealcoating scam (as well as other home improvements like tree removal or chimney work). It starts with a knock at the door. The scammer tells you he did paving in the area and has asphalt or sealant left over and can give you a good deal. He creates a sense of urgency to get the work done immediately, often without a formal contract. He takes the money and either begins to work but fails to complete it or does defective work, or takes the money and runs.

If approached by someone unsolicited to do work at your home, ask to see their licenses. The Town of Orangetown has a solicitation ordinance and any door-to-door salesperson must be approved by the Town. In addition, home improvement contractors are required to be licensed by Rockland County. If they cannot produce the licenses, ask them to leave and close the door. If they refuse to leave, call the police.

Other steps to take to protect yourself:

  1. Get multiple quotes for any work (if sounds too good to be true, it usually is);
  2. Do not feel pressured into making a decision when you are first approached;
  3. Request that all estimates be in writing;
  4. Request references and check them;
  5. Consider signing up for the “Do Not Knock Registry” at the Orangetown Town Clerk’s Office at (845) 359-5100 ext. 5004 or email townclerk@orangetown.com;
  6. Contact Rockland County Consumer Protection at (845) 364-3901 to verify if the contractor has a license or if they have had complaints filed against them.
  7. Be a good neighbor, paving scams target senior citizens.
