Dean's Letter: The Story of 525 Olive

Hello St. Paul’s,

Two years ago we celebrated the grand opening of our new space in 525 Olive. We have since worked out most of the initial technical glitches and I believe that for the most part we are all comfortable with finding our way to and from the parking garage.

As you may know, it has been an adventure of over 20 years to get to this point, ever since Dean John Chane initiated the project of maximizing our land asset for the long-term benefit of St. Paul’s. Here’s a refresher of how we got here: Click here to read more.

Forum: Excavating the Bible with Dr. David Moseley; Digging Deeper into the Scriptures - Part 2

9 am, Guild Room

Great works of art -- a painting, a symphony, a novel, or a poem -- may contain layers and layers of hidden meaning beyond the surface level that is easily accessed at a superficial level. There are ancient cities in the Middle East that sit upon more than twenty layers of different civilizations that archeologists dig down through. Likewise, the sophisticated and subtle artistry of the Biblical authors can be concealed beneath layers of meaning and interpretation that have to be excavated and peeled away in order to yield their hidden treasures to the determined exegete. Join David Moseley for Part 2 of this presentation as he digs and sifts through a few Biblical Texts from the Christian Scriptures.

David Moseley, Ph.D. Teaches Religious Studies & Philosophy and is Director of Global Education at The Bishop’s School, La Jolla. Dr. Moseleyholds undergraduate and graduate Degrees in Law, Theology and Philosophy from Oxford University; and a Doctorate in Theology & Music from Cambridge University.  Dr. Moseley taught Theology and Biblical Studies at the University of San Diego for 16 years; he was formerly Theologian-in-Residence at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cathedral in San Diego; a founding member of the Faculty of the San Diego Diocesan School for Ministry; he has Led Trips to the “Holy Land”; and Teaches Adult Education Classes in Parishes throughout the County, and online through his "The Bible ... for Smarties" program.

Welcome Newcomers! Join us for brunch!

12 pm, start in the Cathedral then to Guild Room

Meet the Dean, clergy and other parishioners while enjoying a free brunch! The Newcomers Brunch is our way of welcoming you to our family and a great way for us to get to know each other. We will gather at the foot of the chancel steps for a tour right after the 10:30 am service. Following that we will head over to the Guild Room (past the elevators in the 525 Olive Building). Please let us know you’ll be attending by RSVP’ing (Click Here).

The Music Center Campaign

“Strengthening community, connecting neighbors, and broadening outreach through music.”

The $2.5M Music Center Campaign will create a single space that centralizes all components of our music program—currently dispersed across four different levels throughout campus and without a dedicated rehearsal space—and broaden our community outreach abilities, just as the Guild Room and other spaces on campus do now, but with a special emphasis on the music and arts component of our mission and ministry. Your gift makes a difference, and every gift brings us closer to breaking ground on the Cathedral Music Center Project. Fortunately, we at St. Paul’s are not the only ones who see the civic value of this project; the Parker Foundation is challenging new donors to match their $25,000 gift to the campaign! Please indicate your desire to have your gift of any size matched by Parker by marking “Parker Match” in the memo line of your check or on the Music Center donation page.

Update on Judy MacDonald

Our cathedral registrar and receptionist Judy is “free to move about the cabin” and has been released from the rehabilitation center. She is now permanently residing at The Manor at St. Paul’s Senior Services. She’s getting acclimated to her new environment, still working on her PT and OT, and settling in. We’ve upgraded some of Judy’s household items including a new sofa bed, TV (Wi-Fi enabled!), and some other misc. household items that fit into her new apartment. She’s grateful for the St. Paul’s Family care and support, various donations, and especially to those who have participated in her “food train”, including but not limited to: Konnie Dadmun, Betsey Monsell, Agnes West-Kohler, Stacey Klaman, Mary Rathbun, Kris Hatch, and Mary Tranbarger. Their TLC was key in Judy’s ability to continue to recover!

As Judy continues to heal and get strong, we continue to have Daniel McMillan covering the reception desk in the morning and our volunteers covering the afternoon shift until Judy is cleared by the doctors to return. If you’re interested in helping, email burgessk@stpaulcathedral.org. We have a few slots open in mid-July to fill.

This will be our final “Update on Judy”. You can reach out to Judy directly via The Manor (Apt # 216) going forward. A heartfelt thank you all for the SPC Family’s genuine caring and support during this challenging time for Judy and her SPC co-workers and friends.
