What's the best piece of advice we can offer to sports parents? We like the answer given by Mark Strawbridge when he was recently asked this question. Strawbridge is the Director of the Catholic Schools Athletic League in Denver, CO and a long-time school administrator, having worked with parents, coaches and athletes for more than two decades. He's also a Play Like a Champion trainer who last year trained more than 1,500 parents in the Parent Like a Champion approach. His 60 second reminder may be the most important sports parenting tip you get this season.
As Strawbridge notes, parents should regularly evaluate their expectations and role in a child's youth sports experience. What do we hope our child gains from participating on his or her team in the coming season? Have we asked our child what he or she wants out of the experience? Are we supportive and encouraging of our child and coaches? Do we understand our role as sports parents?
Ask yourself these questions before your child's next practice or game and spend time considering your honest responses. Then make a commitment to be a Champion Sports Parent and embrace this role. By supporting an environment where youth sports belong to our children, we can create a positive impact that improves the culture for all participants.
