Brush Up on Brushes!

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!

Hey, have you heard this? “If I only had the right brush…”

Please. There is no right brush, There is no magic brush. And no brush promises to make painting easier.

For me, a brush is a stick to push paint around. Knowing which stick to use could be helpful in getting the results you are looking for. As an example, when I paint with oils, I prefer a stiffer hair (natural or synthetic) to move the paint.

For acrylics, I paint with many different kinds of brushes. The softer hair brushes, like mops (usually rabbit or sable) hold a lot of water and color. Soft brushes are ideal for washes and even fine-line painting. And the stiffer brushes work great with heavy body acrylics, like Holbein’s Artist Acrylic Paint.

Let me address another question I often get about brush numbered sizes. I have found a brush number is not consistent throughout the industry. The brush number does not mean much to me. Put a brush in my hand and I can tell if it feels right. Go to an Art Store and actually feel the brushes.

I make my brush handles fatter because it is easier to hold for a long period of time. I make the skinny brush handles fatter with lots of electrician’s tape wound around the end. I modify the now-fatter end with twigs, foam and aluminum foil. Refer to my previous BobBlasts on brushes. Go to the archives by clicking here and scroll to BobBlast number 184, 357 and 444.

So the next time someone asks, "What brush did you use?” Just smile and say, “All of them.”
