This past weekend, I taught an online workshop about drawing & painting the undraped model. Just like a vase of flowers, a pear or a landscape, to create the illusion of depth and dimension, it’s all about the light source.
First: Determine where your light source is coming from. I draw an arrow to remind me. It’s the light source with a strong direction - clearly showing the light side and the shadow side. This appears to give your drawing that depth and dimension we are looking for.
In the Demo, I start with a toned grey paper - BFK Rives Gray Printmaking Paper. I also like to use Strathmore Toned Gray paper. If the paper is already a mid-tone, you're halfway there! All you need to do is add the darkest darks and lightest lights.
I make my darkest black lines, using black, soft vine charcoal sticks. Then, the highlights are drawn with white pastel blocks. The mid-tone has already been established.
One of my favorite books for drawing the figure is Henry Yan's Figure Drawing - Techniques and Tips. Wow! Can he draw! Very disciplined, yet powerful. He does workshops, so check him out.
