Weekly BobBlast Issue 455
Best of BobBlast - Florals… Value, Light Source and Living Color!

Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
This week we are hosting a Mentor Workshop of painters! So, we decided to give you a “Best of BobBlast” featuring value, contrast, light source and color while demon-strating Abstract Florals in a vase.

This Best of BobBlast was originally broadcast as BobBlast #187. I reference #186 as the first part of this conversation about value, contrast and light source. If you want to revisit that BobBlast and others, go to our BobBlast Archives by clicking here!

This BobBlast is all about how I use the same principles of value, contrast and light source when painting a vase of flowers. It’s a loose approach, so I’m using my large goofy brushes, paper towels and fingers to sketch the light and dark areas.

I started with a canvas that I describe as a “turkey” - it just didn’t work out! I had started a vase of flowers and I decided that it would be a dandy underpainting as a jumping off point for a new painting. It is very monochromatic and flat AND perfect for this project!

Let’s talk about the light source first. I am focused on the light source coming from the LEFT. Just like the ball and coffee cup demo in previous BobBlasts, I anchor my vase of flowers on a table, knowing the direction of the light source. Then I sketch in my shadow.

I commit to the focal point: The brightest parts are closest to the light (the focal point “flower”) and the darkest parts are the furthest from the light. I know that sounds obvious - but when I am in BobLand, I need to be reminded!

The focal point is found at the most dramatic contrast. Remember, Dark Against Light, Dark Against Light. I will exaggerate this in my work sometimes - just to make me smile!

Paint your dead paintings into Living Color with:
• Strong Light Source
• Strong Color Combination
• Strong Composition
• Strong Commitment
• And Contrast in the back of your mind
Do more work that makes you smile!
