This demo lesson is also about having a daily studio practice - being in your sandbox and painting improvisationally... it is all about the process! Not necessarily the end result.
My collage paintings are made with paint and paper. The paper I use has patterns of all sorts of designs that I put together myself. I paint multiples of stars, stripes and squiggles. I collect flags, dots and checkerboards - then I assemble an original template of patterns to use as my "original" - then off to the photo copy place I go! With my originals, I make a variety of sizes. It's good to have choices! These are the black and white copies I tear into pieces and glue onto my paintings.
On the other hand, I could save time and go to an "art/craft supply store" and buy preprinted patterns. In doing so, my work might look like everyone else's patterns... store bought. I prefer "ownership" in my work, so I like creating my own patterns.
Watch the video! This demo is all about the process of play! I outline my materials and step-by-step below. Just dive in and see what happens.
Materials:
•Gel Medium (it's your glue)
•Large brush
•300 lb watercolor paper
•Transparent acrylic paints (I used Holbein's Marigold and Opera)
•Graphite drawing pencil
I start by putting the gel medium all over the surface. Then I tear the collage papers and stick them down by brushing more glue on top - removes any air bubbles! Color comes after that, then while the transparent acrylic paint is still wet, I wipe, scrape and draw into areas of the collaged painting to reveal the surprising patterns.
That's what I do! It's pure play. Be original… Make your own.
