Improvisation on Canvas Painting
June 13th
Time: 12 - 3pm
REGISTER BY: June 6
CLASS FEE: $89, or $80 for members
FORMAT: IN-PERSON
Students will participate in an “Improvisation On Canvas” clinic- painting to jazz music!
The focus will be on the freedom of expression in the abstract, using texture and colors to guide them. We will utilize several jazz artists of the Be Bop era… ie. Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy, Miles, and more. Students will paint totally from intuition. Acrylic, Pastel’s and Watercolor can be the medium. Oil paints may be used as well for experienced painters.
Students are given guidelines such as putting to canvas what they are hearing- Visual interpretations of audio recordings by the Jazz Greats.
Students are encouraged to “Hear” in color and “Listen” for shape inspiration.
Modern abstractions and also realistic works are both acceptable, however, this is a great learning tool for thinking outside the box and spur of the moment.
Students will be asked to have no preconceived ideas before they start applying their medium to canvas. This class is an exercise in creativity and is open to all students of all disciplines… in art, theater, dance and music.
Open to all skill levels. It is helpful but not required for a student to have painting experience.

Mayhem at Midnight: Disaster Aboard the Propeller Champlain
June 17th
On June 16, 1887 the popular passenger steamer Champlain out of Chicago made a brief stop at Norwood around midnight. It next headed for Charlevoix when a fire suddenly erupted, fed by the lake breezes until the blaze turned into a roaring inferno. Passengers and crew leaped overboard, some in their night clothes, before the boat hit a sandbar off Fisherman’s Island. The Champlain’s entire wooden superstructure was consumed. Twenty nine men, women and children perished, 27 survived.
Charlevoix Historical Society President Geoffrey Reynolds will present a fully illustrated program on the tragic fate of the Champlain on Monday, June 17 at 6:00 pm in the Charlevoix Public Library Community Room. Reynolds has spent years researching and writing about the incident, and will include the latest findings.
This program is given in conjunction with the current exhibit at the Society’s Museum at Harsha House, 103 State Street, on The Maritime History of Charlevoix, the City on Three Lakes. No admission fee. Call 231-547-0373 for more information.

GREAT LAKES CENTER FOR THE ARTS ANNOUNCES CAST OF WHEN YOU WISH…ATRIBUTE TO 100 YEARS OF MAGIC
Great Lakes Center for the Arts (GLCFA) announces the talented cast for its original production WHEN YOU WISH… A TRIBUTE TO 100 YEARS OF MAGIC, a joyous celebration honoring the influence Disney has had on generations young and old.
With performances on June 29 and 30, WHEN YOU WISH will feature vocalists Delphi Borich (INTO THE WOODS and CAMELOT on Broadway), Coleman Cummings (National Tour of RENT), Miranda D. Lawson (Theatre Bay Area award winner for DREAMGIRLS at Broadway by the Bay), Sophia Manicone (PARADE on Broadway), and Jason Weitkamp (FINDING NEMO at Walt Disney World).
“You’ll hear the classics, today’s hits, and some hidden gems in a whole new way, sung by some of the best vocal talents around,” shared Matthew Kacergis, WHEN YOU WISH Co-Creator and Director. “Whether you’re a kid or just young at heart, if you love Disney, this is the show for you.”
Audiences can expect to hear music from throughout cinema and Broadway history, including songs from CINDERELLA, NEWSIES, THE LITTLE MERMAID, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, and FROZEN.
“Almost every performing artist was inspired by Disney in their childhood, and many of us—myself included—have gotten to perform these shows professionally. It really never gets old!” said Kacergis. The company of WHEN YOU WISH is led by co-creators Matthew Kacergis and David Taylor Gomes. Kacergis, GLCFA’s Executive Director, has performed on stages across the country and starred as Prince Eric in the national tour of THE LITTLE MERMAID. Gomes is best known for writing the music and lyrics for BOX UP: THE MUSICAL SERIES and RANKED, which is the subject of the HBO Documentary MY SO-CALLED HIGH SCHOOL RANK, streaming on Max.
“David is a wonderful collaborator and someone who leads a rehearsal room with joy and positivity,” said Kacergis. “He was the perfect person to tap for this production.” Prepare to experience the beautiful melodies and magic-imbued lyrics of the enduring and forever memorable Disney songs we’ve all come to know and love.

Pet of The Week-Janice!
This pretty lady is Janice.
Janice is a very good dog; she knows how to sit, and she doesn't pull a lot on walks.
She'll likely do well with other dogs with a slow introduction. We are unsure how she would do with cats.
Janice doesn't like her tail being touched, so she would do best in a home without children.

Northwest Michigan Works! Seeks Employer Partner for Innovative Talent Retention Program
Businesses in Charlevoix and Emmet counties have an opportunity to join an innovative and highly successful talent retention program. Northwest Michigan Works! is looking for an employer to join its Business Resource Network (BRN) program. The program aims to collaborate with an employer committed to enhancing the retention of their existing workforce. Over the years, industries including manufacturing, retail, landscaping, hospitality, and healthcare have significantly benefited from adopting the BRN model.
In today’s competitive job market, attracting and retaining top talent is crucial for business success. Recognizing this critical need, Northwest Michigan Works! has developed a comprehensive program designed to support employers in nurturing a dedicated and productive workforce. At the core of the Business Resource Network is the introduction of a professional, on-location Success Coach. These highly trained coaches are invaluable resources for employees, offering tailored support to address a variety of challenges, including those related to mental health, legal issues, transportation, housing, childcare, and more.
“Employers in Charlevoix and Emmet counties are already witnessing remarkable results, with a quarterly average retention rate of 90 percent,” said Rob Dickinson, Regional Director for Business Services at Northwest Michigan Works!. “Member employers gain access to a transformative resource that revolutionizes their approach to talent retention. Our Success Coach collaborates closely with employees, providing them with the necessary tools and support to excel both professionally and personally.”
Through employer contributions and support from community partners, the Success Coach dedicates half a day every week on-location with each participating employer, ensuring personalized attention and impactful results. By focusing on employees facing barriers to continued employment, the Business Resource Network tackles the most challenging retention issues directly, ultimately reducing absenteeism and turnover costs while fostering a culture of growth and development.
“We recognize that each employee’s journey is unique, which is why our Success Coaches are dedicated to providing one-on-one support tailored to individual needs,” said Dickinson. “By investing in our workforce, employers can develop a more resilient, engaged, and loyal team, leading to greater long-term success for their businesses.”
The Northwest Michigan Works! Business Resource Network signifies a paradigm shift in talent retention strategies, empowering employers to unlock their workforce’s full potential while fostering a thriving business community in Charlevoix and Emmet counties.
For more information about the Northwest Michigan Works! Business Resource Network and how to get involved, please contact Katie Stolarski, Business Success Coach, at katie.stolarski@networksnorthwest.org or 231.534.4113.
