Fundraising Goal Near For Mt. McSauba Playground; Double Your Contribution With Matching Grant

Since late fall 2023, The Rotary Club of Charlevoix has been raising funds for a new playground at Mt. McSauba. The Club is excited to say they are nearing 50% of the fundraising goal and now have a new opportunity to raise the $250,000 goal even faster.

The Chicago Summer Resort Club of Charlevoix is offering a $50,000 matching dollar grant towards the project. Now is a great time to donate to the project as the Chicago Club graciously matches donations up to a $50,000 total towards the project.

The need for a modern playground facility at Mt. McSauba recreational area was identified through a City of Charlevoix Community Needs Assessment process, though funding for the project has not been available. Given the Rotary Club’s decades-long interest in supporting local youth, raising substantial funds annually for a variety of school and community youth needs, a partnership between the Rotary Club and City of Charlevoix was fitting to help bring this project to fruition.

A community build for the new playground at Mt. McSauba is planned in the spring of 2025.

To donate, visit the Rotary Club’s website at RotaryClubofCharlevoix.org/Donations, or donations can be mailed to Charlevoix Rotary Club, PO Box 532, Charlevoix MI 49720. Donation levels can be seen on the website, and the club plans to recognize donors with signage at the playground.

Pet of The Week-Rusty!

Well hello there! My name is Rusty, it's nice to meet you. I'm sure you can already tell but I have wonderful manners.

I found myself here after being transferred from a much bigger shelter that didn't see my potential to be adopted. I am so grateful to be out of there. I have so much love to give and just want to find the perfect person to give it to.

Though I can be a little shy when I first meet people, I quickly warm up with some affection and my butt wiggles like crazy! I like most other dogs and i don't think I would mind cats or children.

I do have pretty bad allergies and will require a special medication to help keep them under control, but I promise I'm worth it!

Child Care Solutions Showcase Offers a Regional Plan of Action

A new plan offering practical solutions to child care challenges in northwest Lower Michigan will be presented at a Child Care Solutions Showcase scheduled for multiple locations in the region during the month of May. The Showcase event will highlight the challenges and opportunities for child care in our community, including current policy initiatives. Solutions for businesses, local governments and other organizations to increase access to quality care will be presented. The event will also serve as a way to facilitate community conversations about next steps.

Supported by a grant Networks Northwest received from the Early Childhood Investment Corporation’s (ECIC) Child Care Innovation Fund, the Northwest Regional Child Care Planning Coalition spent the past year looking at the capacity and quality of the current child care system, the child care preferences of parents, and the needs of the business community. The Coalition also looked at barriers to increasing access and affordability, and strategies for policy, funding and programs meant to overcome these barriers.

Four options are available for attending the Child Care Solutions Showcase. Live, in-person events will be held May 21 in Traverse City, May 22 in Cadillac, and May 29 in Petoskey. There will also be a regional virtual option via Zoom on May 28. Business leaders, government officials, community leaders, and anyone else seeking to improve our child care system are encouraged to attend.

There is no charge.

Registration and more information are available at, nwm.org/ChildCareShowcase

NORTH CENTRAL MICHIGAN COLLEGE OFFERS FREE COLLEGE SUCCESS PROGRAM

Students can register now for summer program

North Central Michigan College (NCMC) announces the launch of Timberwolves Thrive, a free five-week summer program designed to help students build confidence, sharpen study strategies, and be college-ready by Fall 2024.

Timberwolves Thrive offers a comprehensive support system that includes breakfast and lunch provided daily, transportation assistance (up to $175 in gas cards or bus fare), a stipend of up to $25 per day, and all program materials, textbooks, and laptops. Students who finish the program and enroll and attend fall classes at NCMC get to keep the laptop.

“Timberwolves Thrive will provide students with access to important support services, guidance on financial aid, opportunities to strengthen English and math competencies, and access to essential learning materials,” said NCMC Vice President of Student Affairs Renee DeYoung.

The program is open to all new-to-college students who have earned a high school diploma or GED — from recent high school graduates to adult learners — regardless of which Michigan college they plan to attend. However, students who have earned college-level credit for math or English are not eligible for the program.

Michigan’s FY2023 budget allocated $10 million for academic catch-up programs like Timberwolves Thrive. Administered by the Michigan Community College Association, the initiative supports community colleges’ efforts to combat learning loss among recent high school graduates, whose in-person learning was affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“These programs provide the environment and skills to prepare students for college-level coursework, making their transition to college easier and setting them up for continued success,” DeYoung said.

Timberwolves Thrive runs July 15— August 15, Mondays through Thursdays, from 8:30 a.m.—1 p.m. at NCMC’s Gaylord Center (620 E. 5th Street, Gaylord). Program space is limited to ensure students receive personalized support and guidance. Students are encouraged to register online by June 15. For additional details or to apply, visit https://www.ncmich.edu/academics/timberwolves-thrive.html

NCMC CELEBRATES A DECADE OF ITS EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAM

400+ students have gotten their start via the free program, which is expanding to include Cheboygan High School and Inland Lakes School District.

North Central Michigan College is marking the 10-year anniversary of its Early College program, celebrating a decade of providing Northern Michigan families with an innovative, affordable path to higher education.

Since its launch in 2014, the Early College program has flourished, initially welcoming a cohort of 25 students from Petoskey High School. Today, the program boasts 413 graduates from Petoskey High School, Boyne City High School, and Gaylord High School, all of whom earned their associate degree from North Central at no cost.

Fall 2024 marks another milestone in the program’s history, as students from Cheboygan High School and Inland Lakes School District join as NCMC Early College partners.

Admission into Early College follows criteria set by both North Central and participating high schools, with new students starting their journey in the winter semester of their sophomore year. They balance high school classes with college courses, gradually building up to a full associate degree by their fifth year. Coursework is undertaken both at the students' respective high schools and on North Central's Petoskey campus.

Corey Lansing, North Central’s director of admission, reflected on the program’s impact to the region. “We're incredibly proud of the growth and success of our Early College program and the students who have embraced this fantastic opportunity,” Lansing said. “Early College isn't just about accelerating academic progress; it's about fostering a love for learning and empowering students to realize their full potential.”

Early College graduate Cassidy Leirstein, who now serves as North Central’s dual enrollment coordinator, agrees, calling the program’s growth “incredible.”

“As a high schooler in 2015, I never imagined I would be able to save $55,000 through Early College — savings that helped me finish my college education with minimal debt. Now I’m honored to support students across Northern Michigan to achieve the same goal,” Leirstein said.

For more information about Early College and dual enrollment opportunities, contact Director of Admission Corey Lansing at 231-439-6349 or clansing@ncmich.edu, or visit www.ncmich.edu/admissions and select "College for High School Students."

About the Early College Program:

The Early College program at North Central Michigan College offers motivated high school students the opportunity to earn both their high school diploma and an associate degree tuition-free in five years, providing a seamless transition to higher education and future career success.
