The Three Mile Island nuclear plant accident in 1979, the Y2K controversy in 1999 and, more recently, the coronavirus pandemic presented major challenges for leaders trying to talk to the public about something strange and complex. Charlie MacInnis used research-based strategies for all three as a utility company communications manager and, more recently, as a local elected official. He will review the methods that worked for the first two and the major changes that have been needed for the coronavirus pandemic. He will also explain why the advice of an ancient Chinese general is still vitally important today.

Pet of The Week - Pugsley!

Meet Pugsley! This handsome boy came in with his brother and sister as transfers from another shelter that was running out of space. Pugsley is a sweet but shy guy who is a bundle of energy once he gets to know you. As with all puppies, Pugsley does have lots of energy and will need to learn basic manners as well as house breaking. This guy is an Australian Shepard/Pit mix so he will grow up to be around 40 pounds by our estimate. Please keep in mind that all puppies adopted from us under 9 months will be required to take puppy training classes. Come meet this sweet boy and you will be sure to fall in love!

Chip Hansen Announces Retirement from Charlevoix County Community Foundation

After serving as the Community Foundation’s President for the past 13 years, Chip Hansen has announced that he will retire at the end of April 2023.

During Hansen’s tenure as President, the assets of the Community Foundation grew from $19.4 million in July 2010 to more than $55 million today. The number of charitable funds has grown to 330. Total grants and scholarships have increased from $1 million to more than $2.5 million annually. More than 80 Legacy Society members have been added as well, and these future gifts will ensure that the Community Foundation will continue to work at the intersection of resources and opportunity well into the future. He has expanded the role of the Community Foundation as a visible and engaged leader in the community locally, while also enriching the field of philanthropy regionally and statewide. Along with others, Hansen organized a group of regional community foundation leaders who meet quarterly to share resources and ideas. He has served on several Council of Michigan Foundation (CMF) planning committees and is currently serving as one of four co-chairs of CMF’s 50th Anniversary Committee. “Chip has been a dedicated and faithful advocate for all of us in Charlevoix County. His tireless work at the Charlevoix County Community Foundation will leave a measurable impact on our area for generations to come,” says Board Chair Monica Peck. “All of us who have had the pleasure of working with Chip have benefited from his kind and innovative leadership.”

Char-Em ISD’s Jim Rummer named Michigan’s 2023 Career Tech Administrator of the Year

When Jim Rummer began his career as Director of Career and Technical Education for Char-Em ISD 15 years ago, there were a handful of vocational education programs spread around the ISD’s 11 public school districts. CTE was just taking off and becoming recognized as a valuable path for some high school students post-graduation.

Rummer has spent the past 15-plus years growing not only CTE programs throughout the ISD, but also the reputation of the skilled trades as high-paying, in-demand, crucial jobs for young adults after they graduate from high school. Today, Char-Em ISD and local school district partners offer 20 different courses running the gamut of skills and subjects, from aviation to woodworking and many innovative options in between.

In recognition of Rummer’s exceptional efforts with career and technical education in Michigan, he was selected as the Michigan Association for Career and Technical Education’s 2023 CTE Administrator of the Year. He was recognized during the Michigan Career Education Conference annual event on Jan. 31, 2023, in Grand Rapids. Along with Rummer’s recognition, Char-Em ISD career tech was also recognized with an Excellence in Practice Award for the newly launched Char-Em Street STEM program.

“Jim Rummer’s name has become synonymous with ‘career tech’ in Northern Michigan, and for good reason. He is committed to providing opportunities for kids to explore career interests and to find their passion, and he’s also committed to making innovative programs happen,” said Scott Koziol, Char-Em ISD Superintendent. “Jim has changed the conversation around the skilled trades in our area to one that showcases the positive possibilities such careers hold for our region’s young adults. This state-level award is much deserved, and his colleagues at Char-Em ISD congratulate Jim on this recognition.”
