A Public Forum about Protecting our Health and Waters

Did you know that Michigan is the ONLY state without statewide regulations to prevent septic systems from polluting our waters? The State of Michigan estimates that roughly half of its rivers and streams exceed the safety standard for concentrations of E. coli bacteria, which is an indication of fecal pollution in the water.
Michigan’s fresh waters and the health of its communities are dependent on having properly working septic systems!
The League of Women Voters Northern Lower Michigan in partnership with the Petoskey District Library will present a public forum on septic system problems and solutions. Two local experts in septic regulation and health implications of septic pollution will provide information on Michigan’s situation and current efforts to reduce septic system pollution.

Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra (GLCO) presents Dreams of Faraway Lands

Musical portraits by celebrated composers will transport you to the distant regions of the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Southern Europe in this smorgasbord-concert of distinct musical cultures presenting works such as Mozart’s Abduction from Seraglio and Turkish March, Rossini’s Italian Girl in Algiers, Turina’s Five Gipsy Dances, and Sibelius’ incidental score for the play Belshazzar’s Feast.
The highlight of the concert is Marcus Paus’ Portrait of Zhou for Flute and Orchestra. Paus is the most prominent contemporary Norwegian composer of our time known for promoting works that are influenced by folk music and non-Western classical music, in this case Chinese music. The piece will be presented by an award-winning flutist Nancy Stagnitta, who is a leading crossover artist as both classical flutist and jazz artist. Her passion, versatility, and elegant artistry have led to concert engagements in Africa, Europe, Asia, and across the U.S. In 2018, she gave the Asian premier of David Amram’s Giants of the Night Flute Concerto with the China National Symphony in Beijing.

The Earth Day Clean-Up invites local residents, businesses, and visitors alike to join in the effort to preserve and beautify our natural surroundings.
Volunteers will be gathering at Lake Michigan Beach, Depot Beach, Ferry Beach, and the Mt. McSauba Recreation Area at 10:00 AM and 4pm, equipped with gloves and garbage bags generously provided by the City of Charlevoix.
Ferry Beach, Depot Beach and East Park clean up will be from 10am-12pm.
Mt. McSauba and Michigan Beach clean up will be from 4-6pm.

International Lecture: Global Classroom – Expanding Educational Access to Forcibly Displaced Students

How can institutional infrastructures of universities be leveraged to expand college education to forcibly displaced students? Conflict- and climate-induced disasters around the world affect millions of people every year, forcing many to leave their homes. These devastating events generally result in children and college-age youths being driven out of schools and campuses to refugee camps, forcing many of them into engaging in questionable activities, such as joining a rebel organization.
College campuses around the world are presented with a daunting responsibility to create educational opportunities to address the plight of the forcibly displaced college-age youths languishing in places where educational opportunities are already limited. This presentation describes implementation of a student-led educational exchange program called Global Classroom that is designed to provide college education to refugees living in the Dzaleka Refugee camp in Malawi, Africa.
Prakash Adhikari, Ph.D., teaches political science at Central Michigan University. His areas of research and teaching lie at the intersection of International Relations and Comparative Politics, with a specific focus on forced migration and transitional justice. His work has received several awards, prizes, and funding, including a grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).
Adhikari has published several articles and book chapters in places such as the American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Conflict Resolution, International Studies Quarterly, Journal of Human Rights, and Oxford University Press, among others. His ongoing research looks at integration of resettled refugees into American society and the implications of forced migration on international security.

After Years of Delays, Trail Linking Boyne City with Charlevoix Back on Track
Work on the third phase of the non-motorized, multi-use Boyne City to Charlevoix Trail commenced recently when contractors began clearing the way for the trail’s extension.
Slated for completion this year, the 2.36-mile segment will begin at the north end of Springwater Beach Road (Evangeline/Bay Township line) and continue detached within the right-of-way on the Lake Charlevoix side of Boyne City-Charlevoix Road through Bay Township. Just east of the Village of Horton Bay, the trail will connect to the road’s wide shoulder through the village. The trail will utilize the road shoulder due to the close proximity of homes.
The trail has been envisioned for about 22 years, and under active development since about 2010, but after the completions of Phases 1 & 2, Phase 3 got off track during the pandemic. In the last year county staff, volunteer organizers, and stakeholders in northern Charlevoix County - particularly Bay, Hayes, and Evangeline townships - successfully jump-started the stalled plan.
The plan’s third phase, now underway, will be completed this year and will extend the southern leg by 2.36 miles, running north to Horton Bay.
No dates have been set for the two remaining phases, which account for the remaining six-plus miles that will connect the entire trail. However, the work to get Phase 3 completed has reconnected and re-engaged the three townships and the trail team. This fall the Charlevoix County Trail Team will begin conducting public outreach on plans to finish the trail.

Snowball is considered a special needs dog as she is totally deaf, but she doesn't let a little thing like that get in her way!
Snowball is full of spunky sweetness and has wonderful manners.
Snowball was originally adopted from us several years ago but was found running as a stray in another county and was never picked up.
After that Snowball found herself back at CAHS in search of a lasting forever home. Snowball is a bit cautious of other dogs and we think she would be fine with cats. She is also house trained.

New Study Shows Outdoor Recreation Contributes $1.15 Billion to Northwest Michigan Economy
The outdoor economy employs 4,712 workers in the 10 counties of northwest Lower Michigan and contributed $1.15 billion to the Gross Regional Product in 2022. That information comes from a new Outdoor Recreation Economic Impact Study for Northwest Michigan. The study was developed by Networks Northwest in partnership with the Alliance for Economic Success, the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce, the Northern Lakes Economic Alliance, and Traverse Connect.
The study looks at the importance of outdoor recreation as an economic driver in the region. It provides baseline data and quantifies the impact of the outdoor economy. The study also includes recommendations for expanding on the strengths and opportunities in the industry.
“This study showcases the critical importance of the outdoor recreation industry in Northwest Michigan, as well as its potential for further business opportunity,” said Janie McNabb, CEO, Networks Northwest. “These recommendations underscore the need to work collaboratively for the benefit of both our economy and our natural resources.”
Findings and recommendations are based on a thorough analysis of labor market information, demographic data, business and industry trends, as well as individual interviews and a survey of more than 200 local companies.
“The Outdoor Recreation Economic Impact Study aims to gain insight into the opportunities available in the recreational sector in our region,” said Stacie Bytwork, President, Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce and Networks Northwest board member. “This study assists with developing a plan to attract growth and make us stand out as a place of choice. With our numerous unique recreational assets in the region, we are grateful to be a part of this process and excited to work collaboratively towards implementing strategies that will benefit both our region and individual communities.”
The study shows that the region has almost double the concentration of agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting employment than national averages for regions of similar size. The region is 32% above the national average for spending on boats, trailers, campers, and recreational vehicles, and surpasses the national average in other sports equipment, and water sports equipment.
Opportunities for business investment and development are recommended in the following categories: Camping and camping equipment; bicycles; sports, recreation, and exercise equipment; and rental/repair of sports, recreation, and exercise equipment. 72.2% of businesses surveyed for the study have plans to grow or expand their businesses in the next three years.

CIRCLE OF ARTS HOSTS PRESTIGIOUS MICHIGAN WATER COLOR SOCIETY
SIGNATURE EXHIBITION
Charlevoix Circle of Arts is thrilled to announce its upcoming show, the Michigan Water Color Society Signature Exhibition.
Running from April 19th to May 18th, the exhibition will kick off with an opening reception on Friday, April 19th, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, where attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the artists and enjoy light refreshments.
This Signature Exhibition will spotlight 40 watercolor artists from all regions of Michigan, including 19 Great Lakes Fellows and 21 Signature status members of the Michigan Water Color Society. Signature status is conferred upon artists who have successfully passed the rigorous jury process for a minimum of four annual exhibitions within the past 12 years.
Presently, there are 68 remarkable artists who have achieved this prestigious status. Furthermore, those Signature status members who have completed a three-year term on the Water Color Society’s board receive the esteemed Great Lakes Fellow designation, acknowledging their invaluable volunteer service.
This marks the 2nd Signature Exhibition for the Michigan Water Color Society. The introduction of Signature status took place at the 73rd/74th Annual Exhibition in 2021.

Protecting Children and Infants
HDNW invites all to make a difference during National Infant Immunization Week
National Infant Immunization Week is more than a health observance. It’s a priority. With measles – once eliminated in the United States by vaccination – making a comeback, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) and Northern Michigan Public Health Alliance urges residents to get their children vaccinated.
On average, nearly one in five unvaccinated people in the United States who get measles need to be hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions. In a recent outbreak in Ohio, more than 40% of infants and children infected with measles were hospitalized.
“Giving children and infants the recommended vaccines is the best way to protect them from serious childhood diseases like measles and whooping cough, also known as pertussis,” says Dan Thorell, HDNW Health Officer. “A moment of discomfort ends up providing prolonged protection for children and our communities from infectious diseases.”
National Infant Immunization Week, which runs from April 22-29, highlights the importance of protecting children two years and younger from vaccine-preventable diseases. Routine vaccinations protect again these 14 diseases:
· Polio
· Tetanus
· Flu
· Hepatitis A and B
· Measles, Mumps and Rubella (one vaccine)
· Hib
· Whooping Cough
· Pneumococcal
· Rotavirus
· Chickenpox
· Diphtheria
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), childhood vaccination is important because it helps provide immunity before babies and children are exposed to potentially life-threatening diseases. Many infants and kids are behind on routine vaccinations, which puts them and others at risk.
“Infants and children have developing immune systems that can fight off germs they encounter daily through food, air, or on objects,” says Joshua Meyerson, HDNW Medical Director. “However, some diseases require a more robust immune response to prevent severe illness, making childhood vaccination highly effective because it is scheduled for when the child’s immune system learns the most from the vaccine.”

If you are unsure of whether your child has missed any shots, please reach out to your primary care provider or HDNW at 800-432-4121. HDNW uses a variety of programs and bills most insurances to offer free vaccines to families. No one will be turned away due to the inability to pay.

HDNW celebrates community collaboration during National Public Health Week
Public health is a specialized kind of healthcare that focuses on preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health. And during National Public Health Week, April 1-7, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) is recognizing how impassioned residents and professionals have worked together to accomplish great achievements: like ending multiple plagues through vaccinations, advancing protections of the public food and water supplies, improving nutrition and dental care for families, and more.
Everyone from students and organizations, communities, and public health workers are applauding the collaborative efforts and their outcomes of public health with this year’s theme is “Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving: We Are All Public Health.”
“Our goal of Healthy People in Healthy Communities seems simple, but it takes a high level of commitment to attain and maintain,” says Dan Thorell, HDNW Health Officer. “Our residents’ health is impacted in a variety of ways: food, water supply, proper sewage disposal, health screenings, prevention and control of infectious diseases, and immunizations. We focus on these daily so our neighbors living throughout Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego counties can focus on their families, careers, and healthy living.”

In addition, HDNW representatives will spend Wednesday, April 10, in Lansing meeting with local elected officials to discuss public health legislative priorities and funding needs for local programs. HDNW representatives will also attend a presentation on the 2024 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps Findings Report, which contains a nationwide collection of health data that can be broken down by county.
“As your local health department, we focus on specific services, like clinics and inspections, but we also maintain a big-picture view of how communities flourish when their basic needs are met,” says Holly Campbell, HDNW Deputy Health Officer. “We want everyone to know that they can help make their communities healthier, safer, and stronger by supporting and engaging with one another—and with us.”
