Summer Salon Open House & Reception, plus PAINT OUT event
July 14th
5pm-7pm
Charlevoix Circle of Arts welcomes visiting and local artists to take part in the annual plein air Paint Out event on July 13th and 14th, 2023, highlighting Charlevoix’s scenic beauty. The French phrase “en plein air” means “in the open air” and is used to describe the act of painting outdoors.
New this year is a Quick Draw event on Thursday, July 13, from 5-7pm in downtown Charlevoix’s East Park. Artists are challenged to create a work of art in the 2-hour timeframe, from the perspective of their choice in East Park or the adjacent Marina area. Completed paintings will be on display in East Park from 7-9pm, and people are encouraged to stop down to take a look and vote for their favorite to win the People’s Choice Award.
The public is invited to attend this event’s Paint Out Reception and Summer Salon Open House, a culmination celebration on Friday, July 14, from 5-7pm at the Charlevoix Circle of Arts, where you can enjoy light fare, mingle with artists, and view and purchase artwork on display in the Summer Salon and created during the 2-day Paint Out.

Pet of The Week - Evelyn!
Hi guys, Evelyn here!
I found myself here at the shelter after my owner could no longer care for me, they say it wasn't my fault, but I'm still pretty bummed.
I would love to find a forever family and a new place to call home. I have a big heart and I'm full of energy and spunk. I love learning and I will need to learn a quite a few manners but I'm willing to give it a shot if you are!
I get a little nervous when people raise their voice at me or come towards me too fast so I'm not sure if a home with little kids would be the best fit for me.
Do you have room in your heart for me? I promise to love you forever!

Great Start Collaborative receives preschool grant funding from local foundations
The Great Start Collaborative and Parent Coalition of Charlevoix, Emmet and Northern Antrim Counties recently received preschool funding that will support families and children in Northern Michigan.
The Charlevoix County Community Foundation and the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation both provided funding to the Great Start Preschool Scholarship Program.
“Having access to high-quality, early childcare is a key factor impacting a child’s school readiness,” said Savanah Cool, Great Start director. “While there are income-based programs in our communities - Great Start Readiness Program and Head Start, specifically - there is not enough capacity in those programs to serve every child that would qualify. These scholarships remove financial barriers for families to be able to enroll their children in available preschool programs.”
The Charlevoix County Community Foundation provided $10,000, and the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation provided $8,500. Cool said these funds will be available for slots beginning in fall 2023.

‘Our Miracle Van’ HDNW is honored to connect neighbors to meet needs
When Bryan Williams became ill and lost use of his legs earlier this year, his wife, Adell, felt defeated. The couple already cares for Adell’s brother who has cerebral palsy and has become wheelchair bound. How can she manage them both? There are doctor appointments, shopping, trips to the pharmacy, and more. “I felt like a door slammed shut,” says Adell.
The Answer:
Community Connections is staffed by Community Health Workers, trained professionals who make it their business to know what medical and social services are available. They build relations and trust— both of which are crucial to connecting individuals and agencies who can help with residents who need help.
The regional program covers a 10-county area with more than 310,000 residents.
Through a referral, Bryan and Adell Williams, and their brother, Wayne Fox, became involved with Community Connections, an HDNW program that helps area residents with needs such as food, shelter, and transportation. When the program’s HUB Coordinator and Community Health Worker Jen Vollmer received a call that a local resident had a van—fully equipped with an electric wheelchair lift—to donate, she was shocked. “The family really couldn’t go anywhere other than doctor appointments due to the issues with transportation,” Jen says. “I’ve never had anything quite like this happen with Community Connections.” Now the Williams and Fox family can schedule joint doctor appointments, go sit in the park, grocery shopping together, and even occasionally eat out.
“My brother really brightens up. He dresses up to get out of the house,” Adell says. “We talk about how we can pay it forward someday. We are so grateful. It’s been life changing.” Do you or someone you know need assistance? If so, local referrals can be easily made here

TIP OF THE MITT SCORE SELECTS TILLIE’S TAFEL AS CLIENT OF THE YEAR
Tip of the Mitt SCORE, the local chapter of SCORE International, has selected Tillie’s Tafel as the 2023 Client of the Year. The Client of the Year is selected by the local SCORE mentors from the clients served in the year prior. SCORE offers confidential mentoring services at no charge for current or prospective small business owners.
SCORE Tip of the Mitt has been working with Patti and Jeff Dewes, owners of Tillie’s Tafel, since 2021 when the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce recommended SCORE’s services.
SCORE Tip of the Mitt Chapter Chair, Tracey Dryovage states, “We like to pick a client who has had great success in contributing to their community. Tillie’s Tafel started by selling their cinnamon rolls in the local farmer’s market during the Covid-19 pandemic. Since then, they have leased a storefront in Downtown Petoskey, where they have since expanded into a larger space and added Moomers Homemade Ice Cream. Along with the expanded storefront, they still support the local farmers’ markets, along with selling and shipping their products on-line. We at SCORE look forward to a long-term relationship with Jeff and Patti and Tillie’s Tafel - for the life of the business.”
SCORE’s business mentors typically are retired or current business owners, executives or managers who volunteer to share their expertise. To learn more about SCORE’s Tip of the Mitt chapter, see tipofthemitt.score.org. To request a mentor, see ‘find a mentor’ at tipofthemitt.score.org or call the Petoskey Chamber at 231-347-4150.
Visit Tillie’s Tafel at 437 E. Mitchell Street, or visit tilliestafel.com for more details. You can also find them at the Charlevoix, Boyne City and Petoskey farmers markets.

NCMC, NORTHWOOD UNIVERSITY RENEW AGREEMENT ENSURING SMOOTH TRANSFER FOR STUDENTS
North Central Michigan College and Northwood University have reaffirmed a partnership that promotes seamless transfer between the two institutions. The “3+1” transfer articulation agreement ensures that students who study at North Central for three years can transfer to Northwood to complete a bachelor’s degree in one year on the following tracks: accounting, management, and marketing.
“This agreement strengthens our partnership with Northwood University and our shared commitment to helping students reach their academic and career goals,” said Michele Andrews, dean of business, education, and adjunct faculty at NCMC.
Originally signed in 2017, North Central’s agreement with Northwood minimizes credit loss and prevents the duplication of coursework for transferring students who meet the requirements outlined.
“This transfer articulation agreement streamlines the path for North Central Michigan College students to earn bachelor’s degrees in business at Northwood University,” said Kristin Stehouwer, academics vice president and provost at Northwood. “NCMC students can complete their Northwood degrees online or at our campus in Midland. This agreement removes barriers and strengthens the relationship between NCMC and Northwood University, but most importantly, it helps us serve the collective needs of our students.”
North Central also has articulation agreements with Ferris State University, Great Lakes Boat Building School, Lake Superior State University, Northern Michigan University, Northwestern Michigan College, and University of Michigan – Flint.
In addition to its individual articulation agreements with partner institutions, North Central participates in the MiTransfer Pathways agreements. Signed in 2020, MiTransfer Pathways are multi-institutional articulation agreements that allow students to complete associate and bachelor's degrees at participating institutions across the state. North Central offers 10 transfer pathways in the following concentrations: art, biology, business, communication, criminal justice, exercise science, mechanical engineering, psychology, public health, and social work.
