Symposium attendees will engage with local, state, and national experts who have fostered innovation through new practices and policies. This handsome guy is Chad.
Chad is a pretty chill dog, but he's a little weary around men. With a slow and careful introduction he comes around pretty quickly.
He is not house trained. We are unsure how he would do with other dogs, cats, or children.
He would do great with someone who has the time and energy to train him, as he is a high energy dog and has the spunk and playfulness of a puppy. Chad is a sweetheart and will surely steal your heart when you meet him!

Founded in 1995, Groundwork focuses on locally based solutions that create a clean environment, strong economy and healthy community. Programs include climate and clean energy projects, farm-to-school support, community design and more. Child Care Solutions Showcase Offers a Regional Plan of Action
A new plan offering practical solutions to child care challenges in northwest Lower Michigan will be presented at a Child Care Solutions Showcase scheduled for multiple locations in the region during the month of May. The Showcase event will highlight the challenges and opportunities for child care in our community, including current policy initiatives. Solutions for businesses, local governments and other organizations to increase access to quality care will be presented. The event will also serve as a way to facilitate community conversations about next steps.
Supported by a grant Networks Northwest received from the Early Childhood Investment Corporation’s (ECIC) Child Care Innovation Fund, the Northwest Regional Child Care Planning Coalition spent the past year looking at the capacity and quality of the current child care system, the child care preferences of parents, and the needs of the business community. The Coalition also looked at barriers to increasing access and affordability, and strategies for policy, funding and programs meant to overcome these barriers.
Four options are available for attending the Child Care Solutions Showcase. Live, in-person events will be held May 21 in Traverse City, May 22 in Cadillac, and May 29 in Petoskey. There will also be a regional virtual option via Zoom on May 28. Business leaders, government officials, community leaders, and anyone else seeking to improve our child care system are encouraged to attend.
There is no charge.

CHARLEVOIX CIRCLE OF ARTS UNVEILS TWO NEW OUTDOOR SCULPTURES
Charlevoix Circle of Arts is excited to announce the addition of two captivating outdoor sculptures, crafted by artist TJ Christiansen.
These remarkable metal pieces, a majestic horse and a graceful salmon, now enrich the landscape of the art center, inviting visitors to experience the beauty and splendor of nature through art. TJ Christiansen, originally from Charlevoix and now residing in North Carolina, draws inspiration from his deep connection to the outdoors and his childhood experiences in Michigan.
His journey as an artist began with a fascination for chainsaw carvings, nurtured by his family's encouragement and his own dedication to honing his craft. As an educator, Christiansen instilled in his students a love for creating with their hands, passing down the values of craftsmanship and creativity that were instilled in him by his father and grandfather. Christiansen's sculptures reflect his passion for wildlife conservation and environmental awareness. Through lifelike representations of animals, he strives to raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural habitats and protecting endangered species. Each sculpture is a testament to his commitment to bridging the gap between humanity and the natural world.
"We are thrilled to showcase TJ's sculptures at the Circle of Arts, and we are grateful for the opportunity to share his incredible artwork with our community and visitors," says Sarah Matye, Executive Director. Both sculptures, made from recycled steel, are available for purchase. These unique pieces not only serve as stunning works of art but also carry a meaningful message of sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Charlevoix Circle of Arts is a nonprofit organization that’s mission is to cultivate a more inspired and educated community through the arts. The Circle of Arts offers year-round exhibits, art classes, dance instruction, yoga, special events, and more. NCMC CELEBRATES A DECADE OF ITS EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAM
400+ students have gotten their start via the free program, which is expanding to include Cheboygan High School and Inland Lakes School District.
North Central Michigan College is marking the 10-year anniversary of its Early College program, celebrating a decade of providing Northern Michigan families with an innovative, affordable path to higher education.
Since its launch in 2014, the Early College program has flourished, initially welcoming a cohort of 25 students from Petoskey High School. Today, the program boasts 413 graduates from Petoskey High School, Boyne City High School, and Gaylord High School, all of whom earned their associate degree from North Central at no cost.
Fall 2024 marks another milestone in the program’s history, as students from Cheboygan High School and Inland Lakes School District join as NCMC Early College partners.
Admission into Early College follows criteria set by both North Central and participating high schools, with new students starting their journey in the winter semester of their sophomore year. They balance high school classes with college courses, gradually building up to a full associate degree by their fifth year. Coursework is undertaken both at the students' respective high schools and on North Central's Petoskey campus.
Corey Lansing, North Central’s director of admission, reflected on the program’s impact to the region. “We're incredibly proud of the growth and success of our Early College program and the students who have embraced this fantastic opportunity,” Lansing said. “Early College isn't just about accelerating academic progress; it's about fostering a love for learning and empowering students to realize their full potential.”
Early College graduate Cassidy Leirstein, who now serves as North Central’s dual enrollment coordinator, agrees, calling the program’s growth “incredible.”
“As a high schooler in 2015, I never imagined I would be able to save $55,000 through Early College — savings that helped me finish my college education with minimal debt. Now I’m honored to support students across Northern Michigan to achieve the same goal,” Leirstein said.
