Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra presents Copland: Clarinet Concerto & Hoe-down
September 7th
Award-winning clarinetist Jeanmarie Riccobono takes centre stage in Aaron Copland’s jazzy Clarinet Concerto. Jeanmarie is the principal clarinetist in the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and teaches clarinet at Northwestern Michigan College and the Bay View Music Festival.
The renowned jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman asked Copland to compose a work for him. The result was a two-movement concerto: the first section is one of Copland’s most lyrical and melodious creations; the second is in an all-out jazzy style. The movements are connected by a cadenza for the soloist.
The concert will also include Copeland’s Hoedown from Rodeo, Debussy’s Dances Sacred & Profane, and Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte. Originally composed in 1942 for a ballet called Rodeo, Hoedown features two American square dance tunes and evokes the energy and adventure of the American pioneering spirit.
Cellist Lena Sytsma-Reed, winner of the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra’s 17th Annual Young Artist Competition, will be performing Haydn’s Cello Concert No 1.

Help Images by Morris Celebrate Aartvark Gallery's Many Years and Many Photographs in Charlevoix
Images by Morris has been delighted to exhibit and sell fine art photography through Aartvark Gallery for the past several years. Since November we featured kaleidoscopes as well, that were made by American craftsman. We used to run a gallery in Evanston, Illinois and when we moved we carefully packed our scopes away. They are now displayed in this lovely antique showcase, which was made in Chicago nearly a century ago.
Aartvark will be closing their retail location by the end of September. Our antique showcase needs a new home where it can be put to good use displaying and safeguarding its contents. Reach out to Susan if interested in purchasing it (312 608 3996) or email us at imagesbymorris@gmail.com. Stop by Aartvark Gallery to see this extraordinary collection of kaleidoscopes while you have easy access. Peruse the amazing collection of fine art photographs, most of which have been taken in the Charlevoix area. There are some great sales on Terry Salmonson’s images.

Pet of The Week-Jade!
This pretty lady is Jade!
Jade originally came to us as a stray and was adopted, she was unfortunately recently returned due to her zest for adventure.
Jade is a very smart girl but will take herself for a run given the opportunity. When she was with us previously she did very well with other dogs (she also lived with a dog in her previous home) and seemed to do well with cats. Jade is used to children of all sizes and would fit well in just about any family.
Stop by and meet this sweet girl if you are ready to fall in love!

Area Students Receive Record Breaking $475,000 in Scholarships from Charlevoix County Community Foundation
Graduating seniors from Charlevoix County high schools will receive over $475,000 in scholarship funds to help them launch into post-secondary education programs, including vocational training and continuing education programs. This year, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation (C3F) awarded a total of 78 scholarships to 54 unique students. Of those, 47 were single year awards and 31 were multi-year scholarships, which provide financial assistance for students beyond their first year. Scholarship funds were established by local citizens and groups to honor family members, community leaders, educators, and others who value continuing education.
Collaborative geographic scholarship awards make it possible to provide more significant financial support for students by pooling available dollars from multiple individual funds at C3F. Collaborative award recipients for 2024 are Ella Day of Boyne City, Joshua Schultz of Charlevoix, and Zoe Bunker of East Jordan. Zoe had this to say about her collaborative scholarship award, “Receiving scholarship support means that I will be able to get my degree without financial setbacks…Scholarships like this one are the best way for me to follow my dream with as little stress as possible.”
This year, C3F also supported students pursuing career training and skills education fields such as cosmetology, auto mechanics, welding, and electrical lineman training. Charles Stanek, from Boyne City High School, hopes to become an electrical lineman and “help keep the lights on in whatever community” he is working in.
The following students received a C3F scholarship award this year: Brianna Ager, Alivia Blain, Isadora Boyer, Zoe Bunker, Scott Bush, Dylan Clapp, Aedan Cole, Ella Day, Angel Delgado Jr., Charlie Dobbelaer, Amelia Drenth, Gabrielle Dunlap, Katlynn Dunson, Bianca Gietzen, James Greenier, Jurgen Griswold, Madelyn Hardy, Maureen Hautz, Catherine Hayes, William James, Kitana Joseph, Lila Kelly, Grace Kujawski, Richelle Laskowski, Maddison Loper, Cadence Matelski, Justin McCully, Ryeley McGlinch, Molly Muladore, Grace Nemecek, Olivia Olund, Olivia Payne, Chloe Persons, Elizabeth Pop, Melinda Ranville, Kathryn Rohrer, Felicity Sape, Joshua Schultz, Peyton Scott, Alyssa Sherman, Charles Stanek, Lillian Stone, Lucas Stone, Landon Swanson, Anastasia Thompson, Shantyl Thompson-Stevenson, Amy Timmer, Hudson Vollmer, Justin Whisler, Dehquan Wilson, Samuel Wilson, Kate Wood, Preston Worden, and Daniel Ziebarth.
All scholarship recipients shared their excitement and gratitude, stating that this support will allow them to focus on their education and earning a degree instead of their financial burden. Some students said that feeling the community’s support and recognition through their scholarship award was particularly meaningful to them as they head out into the world on their own.
The Charlevoix County Community Foundation is a charitable organization made up of various funds – all of them established by local donors. Some funds are earmarked for specific causes, like scholarships, and others are open-ended to meet changing needs. The funds are held in permanent endowment, so they can continue to grow and generate income to enhance the quality of life in Charlevoix County, now and for generations to come.
For a complete list of the 2024 scholarship recipients, please visit www.c3f.org and click on Scholarships. For more information about how to support Charlevoix County youth, please contact the Charlevoix County Community Foundation at (231) 536-2440, or online at www.c3f.org.

Road Construction Update From Raven Hill:
Adversity is often the bridge between where we are and where we want to be. It can push us out of our comfort zone, leading to new opportunities and a brighter future.
Raven Hill is viewing the bridge construction on Fuller Road at Deer Creek as a temporary adversity and a steppingstone to a better and safer path to the Center. We are maintaining a positive attitude and moving forward with anticipation, knowing that the new timber bridge will be awesome!

Home Improvement Project Available Soon for Charlevoix Homeowners
$300,000 in state money is coming to the City of Charlevoix to help improve existing housing.
This new opportunity for Charlevoix homeowners comes from a CHILL (Community Development Block Grant Housing Initiatives Livability) grant from the Michigan State Housing Department Authority (MSDHA). The grant’s target population are individuals and families who live at or below 80% of the area median income.
With this program, homeowners may receive up to $40,000 to address health and safety concerns and maintenance issues. Some of these projects may include interior and exterior improvements to meet code requirements, roof repair and maintenance, siding, windows, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and insulation. Cosmetic-only renovations and upgrades are excluded from eligibility. The property must be located within the City of Charlevoix to be eligible.
Eligible homeowners with projects requiring CHILL assistance of $10,000 or less will be offered as a grant with no requirement for repayment. Projects of $10,001 or more can receive a-zero interest, zero-payment loan, forgivable after five years and secured as a second mortgage.
“Ensuring the safety and livability of our existing housing stock is a great way to maintain and expand the housing units available in our community. I’m excited that this program will offer assistance to those in need to maintain their property and improve our neighborhoods more generally,” said City Manager Mark Heydlauff.
Jonathan Scheel, Director of Planning & Zoning, is already working on the next steps to get this program ready to go for City residents.
Scheel expects applications to be available by the end of August and encourages those eligible to pre-apply. A pre-application form is available by contacting the City’s Planning & Zoning Department at 231-547-3265 or by email at planner@charlevoixmi.gov.

Funds Needed for New Playground at Mt. McSauba!
Through a Community Needs Assessment process, the City of Charlevoix identified the need for a modern playground facility at the Mt. McSauba Recreational Area and incorporated this need in its community master plan. Unfortunately, funding for this substantial project has not been available. With the approval of the Charlevoix City Council, the Rotary Club of Charlevoix is partnering with the City of Charlevoix through the Recreation Department to orchestrate the funding and community build of a full playground at the Mt. McSauba Recreational Area. This playground will be uniquely designed for the wooded environment where it will reside and will be utilized by hundreds of children and families who recreate at Mt. McSauba each year. The desired playground equipment will be from Penchura, a Michigan company. Doug Smith, a sales representative from Penchura as well as a Charlevoix resident, is helping the Rotary Club of Charlevoix choose the right equipment for the area. Designed with a keen focus on promoting physical activity, imaginative play, and inclusivity, the Mt. McSauba Playground boasts a vibrant and engaging environment that seamlessly blends with the scenic surroundings. The expected cost for the new playground is approximately $250,000. With the help from gifts from foundations, businesses and residents the Rotary Club of Charlevoix is hopeful to make this playground a reality by next summer.

Shannone Dunlap Elected Chair of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Board of Directors
Shannone Dunlap, Director of Business Development for Black Diamond Broadcast Group in Central and Northern Michigan, was elected Chair of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) Board of Directors during the organization’s Annual Business Meeting on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.
"Celebrating 75 years at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island was a dazzling reminder of the legacy the MAB has built and the bright future we have ahead. And while the week was well spent meeting new faces and remembering our past, my takeaway from conversations and conferences is this — we have work to do. I am grateful for the direction of our board, from outgoing chair Debbie Petersmark whose tremendous leadership has brought us to today. And, I look forward to digging in with the new board for the year ahead and working alongside the bold leadership of our new chair, Shannone Dunlap," MAB President/CEO, Casey Jones said. "Together, we will meet the challenges ahead with the same passion and dedication that have guided us for 75 years. And 75 years from now, the MAB will be celebrating the work we do together, today."
Dunlap is the 79th chair of the MAB, one of the largest and most successful state broadcast associations in the nation which represents more than 300 radio and television stations and more than 3,000 individual broadcasting industry employees across the state of Michigan.
"Our local, state & federal political representatives can be and should be our BIGGEST advocates," said Dunlap. "In short, we need them. We need them to think of us first, engage with us first and value local broadcasters as the primary way to reach their constituents. We also need to tell our story to the masses for our industry, local radio and local television stories! Focus on trust and credibility- staying relative & engaged with our communities old & young. Be where they are, including non-viewers and non-listeners alike. Embracing new strategies that leverage our strengths and be thought of first in our local communities. Together our voices are louder, let's tell our stories loud & proud, together!"
