St. Mary School Open House

April 16th

For 113 years, St. Mary School has been serving the spiritual and educational needs of families in the Charlevoix area. We empower teach student to grow spiritually, academically, creatively, and physically so that they may experience, understand, and live their responsibilities to God, family, community, and self.

Along with a strong academic curriculum, our school staff provides St. Mary School students opportunities for spiritual growth and Christian values. Virtue education, skills necessary to get along with others, and a desire to always do, “What would Jesus do?” are a few areas we continually focus on. We try to show the example and motivation that students need in order to know, to love, and to serve God. We expect our students to live as Jesus wants us to, both in school and throughout their lives after they walk out the doors of St. Mary School.

We are proud of the academic growth that we see in our students each year. Students are given the tools and guidance to reach their highest potential. Our student to teacher ratio is small, which allows our teachers to provide individualized instruction for our students. St. Mary teachers also regularly focus on improving teaching techniques, curriculum, and making adjustments to each student’s learning based on their testing performance in order to provide our students with the best academic opportunity in the area. Year after year St. Mary School students outperform Local and National norms on standardized testing.

St. Mary School recognizes the importance of a strong working relationship with our school families. We work closely with parents in all aspects of school life. Our students’ spiritual and academic growth are always the focus of our daily efforts.

Please help us congratulate Noreen on her 25 years of service to the Charlevoix Agency, Inc!

Noreen came to work at the Charlevoix Agency, Inc. on April 15, 1999 after working at Mettlers in Charlevoix and before that moving to Charlevoix from Hudson, Florida where she was an Insurance Agent at an Independent Agency.

Noreen is one of the friendliest people you will ever meet and anyone that knows her or has worked with her over the years knows what a dedicated Agent and friend she is.

Congratulations on 25 years!

Pet of The Week- Honey!

This little doll is Honey! Honey found herself her as a stray and looked like she had recently had puppies. We were able to get her spayed, current on vaccines and microchipped. Now she is ready to find her forever home!

Honey is very sweet to her people and loves attention. She could use a little refresher on her manners as she does tend to jump up. Honey is very small for her breed weighing in at only about 30 pounds full grown.

She is not a fan of the other dogs here and we are unsure of how she would be with cats. Besides the jumping, Honey would likely do well with children.

NCMC OFFERING COLLEGE CREDIT FOR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER TECH CLASSES

New partnership gives CTE students a head start in 13 NCMC programs

North Central Michigan College is helping high school graduates get a head start on their college journey by expanding college credit for students who have completed high school career and technical education (CTE) programs. North Central has partnered with the Michigan Department of Education's Office of Career and Technical Education to provide NCMC credit for high school CTE courses aligned with 13 of the college's academic programs.

“This initiative underscores North Central’s commitment to fostering seamless transitions from high school to college and providing even more accessible pathways to higher education,” said NCMC Dual Enrollment Coordinator Cassidy Leirstein. "Now CTE graduates can save money on tuition while accelerating their progress in programs they’re already interested and invested in, including accounting, business, education, and engineering."

CTE programs offer Michigan high school students hands-on learning experiences aligned with in-demand, high-wage careers in fields such as business, information technology, healthcare, hospitality, and manufacturing. In Michigan, 106,077 high school students were enrolled in 2,130 CTE programs during the 2021-22 school year. Six months after their high school graduation, 71% reported that they were using the skills learned in their CTE programs for continuing education or in their current job.

Locally, career and technical education is popular throughout Charlevoix-Emmet Intermediate School District. There are more than 1,050 high school students in 50 classes in 21 different program categories, from aviation to lineworker training to welding. Classes are held at all 11 public school districts in Charlevoix, Emmet and northern Antrim counties. Programs include academic coursework, work experience, occupational training, career counseling, and joint activities between business and education.

CTE is an essential component of the total educational system that is critical to workforce development, according to Jim Rummer, Char-Em's director of Career and Technical Education.

“Articulated credit serves as a crucial time- and money-saving tool for students, enabling them to accelerate their educational journey by recognizing prior learning achievements,” Rummer said. “By bypassing redundant coursework, students can expedite their path to graduation, saving both time and money while still achieving their academic goals.”

Ryan McClintic, CTE administrator for Cheboygan Schools, agrees. "This partnership between high school CTE programs and North Central Michigan College is a monumental step forward for our students, offering them a unique and powerful advantage as they transition from high school to higher education,” McClintic said. “It's not just about earning college credits; it's about valuing their hard work and dedication in their chosen CTE fields, recognizing their achievements, and providing them with a solid foundation for their future careers.”

To receive North Central credit, students must have completed the entire state-approved CTE program in high school with a “B” or better, must be registered for courses at North Central, and must apply to the college within two years of high school graduation. Once accepted by NCMC, high school articulated credit may not transfer to other colleges or universities. Students should check with the college or university they are transferring to from NCMC to see if the credits are eligible for transfer.

"North Central is committed to providing a culture of academic excellence and accessibility, and this partnership exemplifies our dedication to providing students with the tools they need to succeed in an ever-evolving economy,” said NCMC Vice President of Academic Affairs Stephen Strom. “We look forward to welcoming and supporting the next generation of Michigan's workforce on their educational journey."

For more information about North Central credit for CTE programs, visit www.ncmich.edu/admissions/ and select “College for High School Students.”

 Public Health is You:

HDNW celebrates community collaboration during National Public Health Week

Public health is a specialized kind of healthcare that focuses on preventing disease, prolonging life, and promoting health. And during National Public Health Week, April 1-7, the Health Department of Northwest Michigan (HDNW) is recognizing how impassioned residents and professionals have worked together to accomplish great achievements: like ending multiple plagues through vaccinations, advancing protections of the public food and water supplies, improving nutrition and dental care for families, and more.

Everyone from students and organizations, communities, and public health workers are applauding the collaborative efforts and their outcomes of public health with this year’s theme is “Protecting, Connecting, and Thriving: We Are All Public Health.”

“Our goal of Healthy People in Healthy Communities seems simple, but it takes a high level of commitment to attain and maintain,” says Dan Thorell, HDNW Health Officer. “Our residents’ health is impacted in a variety of ways: food, water supply, proper sewage disposal, health screenings, prevention and control of infectious diseases, and immunizations. We focus on these daily so our neighbors living throughout Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet, and Otsego counties can focus on their families, careers, and healthy living.”

Throughout the week, HDNW is releasing a series of new videos to explain who we are and what we do. The videos will be featured on our social media channels. Here is a link to one of those videos, Healthy People in Healthy Communities: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBA8N-Ryycc.

In addition, HDNW representatives will spend Wednesday, April 10, in Lansing meeting with local elected officials to discuss public health legislative priorities and funding needs for local programs. HDNW representatives will also attend a presentation on the 2024 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps Findings Report, which contains a nationwide collection of health data that can be broken down by county.

“As your local health department, we focus on specific services, like clinics and inspections, but we also maintain a big-picture view of how communities flourish when their basic needs are met,” says Holly Campbell, HDNW Deputy Health Officer. “We want everyone to know that they can help make their communities healthier, safer, and stronger by supporting and engaging with one another—and with us.”
