Pet of The Week-Snowball!

This cutie patootie is Snowball!

Snowball is considered a special needs dog as she is totally deaf, but she doesn't let a little thing like that get in her way! Snowball is full of spunky sweetness and has wonderful manners. Snowball was originally adopted from us several years ago but was found running as a stray in another county and was never picked up. After that Snowball found herself back at CAHS in search of a lasting forever home.

Snowball has won all of our hearts over and loves spending time in our front office greeting anyone who enters.

She loves to sit in chairs or on our front bench staring out the window. She loves everyone that she meets and we just can't believe she is still with us. Snowball is a bit cautious of other dogs and we think she would be fine with cats. She is also house trained. Open your home to this little lady and we promise she will warm your heart!

Snowball is currently in a wonderful foster home, but still in search of a permanent place to call her own.

Corporate Transparency Act Update from McLane Blatchford CPA Firm

On January 1, 2024, the Corporate Transparency Act (“CTA”) went into effect, requiring millions of U.S. businesses to disclose information regarding their ownership structure (the “Beneficial Ownership Reporting Requirement”)

CTA applies to a wide range of entities. A reporting company is any corporation, limited liability company or similar entity. Also, companies owned by trusts are required to report.

Non-compliance with the CTA can result in hefty fines and potential imprisonment. Reporting violations carry a $591 per day civil penalty, while criminal violations can result in fines of up to $10,000 or two years in prison. Therefore, it is crucial for businesses to understand their obligations under this new law and take the necessary steps to comply.

The CTA represents a significant shift in U.S. corporate law, and its impact will be far-reaching. While it aims to enhance corporate transparency and combat illicit activities, it also imposes new administrative burdens on small businesses.

Companies will need to devote resources to identify their beneficial owners, collect the required information and report it to FinCEN. They will also need to ensure that this information is kept up to date, which could require ongoing monitoring and reporting efforts.

For additional information related to the CTA and the beneficial owner information reporting requirements, please visit www.fincen.gov/boi and www.fincen.gov/boi-faqs.

Navigating the complexities of the CTA and its reporting requirements can be challenging. Please contact our office for a consultation and to help you find your way through the new regulatory landscape, accounting@mbchx.cpa or (231) 437-5300.

Assistance Available for Workers Impacted by Foreign Trade

Workers who have lost their jobs as a result of foreign trade may be eligible for benefits through the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program. TAA provides assistance to laid-off workers to help them return to work as quickly as possible at a comparable wage. These are lifetime benefits so workers may be eligible to receive them regardless of when they were affected by foreign trade, even if they’ve already moved on to another job.

Northwest Michigan Works! will host a Worker Benefit Orientation in August for individuals who are considered to be adversely affected workers under TAA. Orientation attendees will learn more about TAA benefits including career counseling, employability skills, labor market information, resources for job training, job search allowances, relocation allowances, health coverage tax credit, and more.

Workers should contact Northwest Michigan Works! to learn if they are eligible to receive services under TAA. Contact information for Northwest Michigan Works! Centers is available at nwmiworks.org/contact.

Orientation sessions are scheduled for August 14 at 10:30 a.m. and August 28 at 10:30 a.m. Sessions will be held at the Northwest Michigan Works! Cadillac Service Center (423 N. Mitchell Street). TAA adversely affected workers should select one session to attend.

Visit the Northwest Michigan Works! website at nwm.org/TAA for more information and to RSVP for the orientation. Eligible attendees will receive a $50 gift card for participating.

Community Recovery Alliance Names New Executive Director

Conservation Resource Alliance is pleased to announce Suzie Knoll as its new Executive Director. Knoll succeeds Amy Beyer, who has led the organization for 32 years and will retire at the end of 2024. CRA’s Board Chairman Dan Hubbell says, “Amy has grown CRA from a one-person nonprofit to a Great Lakes conservation leader with 11 talented staff, huge impacts on the ground, and a solid reputation for excellent business practices. Through this important transition, we will continue to be laser-focused on leading active community partnerships and using cutting-edge science to build resiliency for northern Michigan and the Great Lakes.”

Knoll brings years of leadership and management experience in the conservation sector, signaling a new chapter of growth and impact for CRA. She will step into the Executive Director role on September 3, 2024. Hubbell says, “Thanks to the dedication and investment of the Board of Directors, our search for CRA’s next leader identified Suzie as a talented professional committed to the relationships, values, and excellence that define CRA. We are thrilled to have Suzie lead us into our next chapter.”

About Suzie Knoll:

Knoll holds a B.A. in Biology and Psychology from Hope College, with a minor in Spanish. She has lived and worked in western and northern Michigan, Chicago, and Mexico. She and her family most recently lived in Ludington, Michigan, where she served as the Executive Director for the Oceana Conservation District since 2014. Suzie led the district's transformation by significantly expanding programs and services, diversifying revenues, and improving the work culture.

Knoll says, “I am really excited to join an organization of passionate colleagues who are creating a lasting impact on a large, regional scale. I am deeply driven by the rewarding work of preserving and restoring riparian habitats and the urgency surrounding habitat loss and climate change.”
