Farm to Table Dinner with Guest Chef Chris Day

August 9th

Join us for a special Farm to Table dinner with guest chef Chris Day! Chris will be utilizing our fresh fruits, and vegetables off the farm while incorporating our wine and ciders into his recipes.

Tickets are $50 and includes a starter, main, and dessert along with small pairing pours of wine and or cider. Chef Chris will be on hand along with Royal Farms owner/ farmer/ wine & cider maker Patrick! This is an amazing price and tickets are limited. Call now and book your spot 231-599-3222 with Jeanne Ann.

The menu is being fine tuned based on harvest timing but I will share soon (I promise this is going to be amazing!)

Chris's passion for food started at a very young age. Cooking was a big part of his family growing up and would be the focal point of their gatherings. He started working in restaurants at the age of 14. He worked at resorts, pizzerias, bakeries, dive bars, breakfast restaurants, french bistros, and much more while learning and developing his craft . He landed his first executive chef job at 23, at the Peninsula Grill on Old Mission Peninsula. Most recently he was the chef at Poppycocks in Traverse city, where he spent years creating and developing his own style. He has recently changed careers and is now a sales consultant for Sysco. He is able to apply his skill set and passions every day with copious amounts of chefs and restaurant owners. This is how Chris came into our lives at Royal Farms...always bringing fresh ideas and knowledge!

Salvation Army Stuff the Bus Event

August 9th & 10th

The Salvation Army will be stuffing their bus with school supplies at the Petoskey Wal-Mart on Friday, August 9th and Saturday, August 10th from 10AM-6PM for children of low-income families. Lite 96.3 will be on site that Friday to kick off the event and bring awareness to the community. Flyers with needed supply items will be handed out at each door by volunteers from community organizations such as the Emmet County Republican party and Little Traverse Bay Kiwanis Club.

Summer “fun in the sun” will quickly be morphing “back to school” and this year more than ever, low-income families need help affording the high cost of school supplies that have nearly doubled in cost over the last couple of years due to inflation. While some children are anxiously awaiting seeing their friends again and fun shopping trips for the latest trends, some children are dreading the return because their parents are simply unable to afford items that are vital to their education.

This not only puts more stress on children who already have stress from maintaining busy schedules between homework, sports and other activities, but also on parents who are trying their best to provide while rushing to the next event and on teachers managing under-equipped crowded classrooms.

“When one child has highlighters, sticky notes and colored pencils and another child doesn’t, it makes it more difficult for them to navigate through the curriculum being taught” says Jenni Hand, Pellston Middle School Teacher. When asked, a local high schooler said he would not only feed ill-prepared, but also feel embarrassed if he didn’t have access to the supplies his peers had and that he needs to succeed.

Stuff the Bus donations are distributed to local schools in Emmet, Charlevoix and Antrim Counties. Two school districts are chosen to be the recipients each year on a rotating basis. For example, last year Mackinaw Public Schools and Boyne Falls Public Schools were chosen while the year prior they were distributed to Pellston Public Schools and Alanson Public Schools. By allowing schools to have the supplies on hand, they are immediately accessible to the children who need them and because they are given confidentially, children do not experience a feeling of shame because their family cannot afford the same items their peers have.

If you are unable to get to Wal-Mart you can find Wal-Mart’s online “Registry for Good” and purchase supplies that will be shipped to The Salvation Army of Petoskey. You may also drop supplies off Monday-Friday 9AM-4PM (closed noon to 1PM) at The Salvation Army’s new Community Center located at 2350 Mitchell Park Drive in Petoskey from now through Friday, August 16th.

Lost Cellars Live Music Schedule:

Pet of The Week-Anna May!

Hi guys!! I'm Anna May and I'm SO excited to meet you! I just love people! I am still learning manners and how to control my excitement so you may see me quite literally jump for joy at times, I promise it's something I'm working on though. I just need a nice human to come along and teach me some basic etiquette. I'm still young and very eager to learn!

You may wonder why I'm a year old and don't have much training, well, I have spent almost my whole life in shelters. I was brought to a shelter out of town at about 4 months old and that's all I've ever known or been exposed to. I'm learning to go on walks now and how to walk nicely and the people here say I'm a quick learner!

Unfortunately since shelter life is all I know, I can be standoffish with other dogs. Who wouldn't be a little reactive to a bunch of strangers barking at you though?!

I'm sure with the right human and some patience we could work through this. I haven't experienced those little fuzzy things called cats so I'm not sure I'd want to coexist with any, but again, maybe it's something I could learn to live with.

Give me a chance and I promise to be the best girl I can be!

Assistance Available for Workers Impacted by Foreign Trade

Workers who have lost their jobs as a result of foreign trade may be eligible for benefits through the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program. TAA provides assistance to laid-off workers to help them return to work as quickly as possible at a comparable wage. These are lifetime benefits so workers may be eligible to receive them regardless of when they were affected by foreign trade, even if they’ve already moved on to another job.

Northwest Michigan Works! will host a Worker Benefit Orientation in August for individuals who are considered to be adversely affected workers under TAA. Orientation attendees will learn more about TAA benefits including career counseling, employability skills, labor market information, resources for job training, job search allowances, relocation allowances, health coverage tax credit, and more.

Workers should contact Northwest Michigan Works! to learn if they are eligible to receive services under TAA. Contact information for Northwest Michigan Works! Centers is available at nwmiworks.org/contact.

Orientation sessions are scheduled for August 14 at 10:30 a.m. and August 28 at 10:30 a.m. Sessions will be held at the Northwest Michigan Works! Cadillac Service Center (423 N. Mitchell Street). TAA adversely affected workers should select one session to attend.

Visit the Northwest Michigan Works! website at nwm.org/TAA for more information and to RSVP for the orientation. Eligible attendees will receive a $50 gift card for participating.

New Mountain Bike Trails Open at Offield Family Viewlands

Little Traverse Conservancy has announced the completion of new mountain biking trails at the Offield Family Viewlands Reserve thanks to a partnership with Top of Michigan Mountain Bike Association (TOMMBA) and 47 donors.

“Soon after the Conservancy purchased the Offield Family Viewlands in 2020, TOMMBA approached us with the idea of creating bike trails there,” said Kieran Fleming, executive director for Little Traverse Conservancy. “With a lead gift from Peter and Quin Curran, the dream has quickly become a reality.”

Starting from the upper parking area, a total of 5.2 miles of flow trail wind through the forested hills of the Viewlands with optional features that include rollers, tables, drops, and jumps. Walkers are also allowed on the new trails with bikers and walkers traveling in opposite directions each day for safety. Most of the trails are considered intermediate level and could be handled by experienced young bikers.

In addition to the Currans, lead gifts came from Daniel Clarke and First Community Bank, the Huckle Family Foundation, the Frey Foundation, and the Offield Family Foundation as well as dozens of additional donors.

The Offield Family Viewlands Reserve now features multiple trails and features for outdoor recreation and enjoyment. A new fishing platform at the pond includes a paved ramp to allow wheelchairs or strollers easy access. More than 4.5 miles of hiking only trails follow the routes of the old golf cart paths.

The Offield Family Viewlands Reserve is located at 995 Hideaway Valley Drive, Harbor Springs, a five-minute drive from the Harbor Springs airport. For more information about this and all Little Traverse Conservancy trails, visit www.landtrust.org/explore.
