Summer Classes for Kids at Raven Hill

Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world.” That being said, Raven Hill is excited to announce a return to past years with Summer Classes for Kids. Classes will replace Discovery Camps, allowing staff and volunteers to teach and participating kids to focus on a specific subject area, like Science Magic, Pioneer Living or Fiber Arts. Of course, there will be some time at the beginning and end of each class to see the animals and play in the Discovery Room, but the majority of each session will focus on a given area of study.

Classes will be informal and active. Three different classes—one each of science, history and art—will be taught in the morning and a different three sessions will be scheduled for the afternoon. Kids can attend morning classes, afternoon classes or both. They will choose their focus and explore a variety of hands-on lessons on a particular topic over the course of four days—Monday through Thursday. There must be a minimum of five (5) registrations per class or that class will be canceled. However, with parent approval of a session change, classes may be merged to reach the minimum number. Those choosing to take morning and afternoon classes, may bring their lunches and stay for a half hour supervised break. Suggested ages are 5 to 14 and activities will be age-appropriate for those signed up in a class. Call 231.536.3369 or email info@miravenhill.org for more information or if you have any questions. A flyer is attached to this email with a list of classes and a registration form. This is the summer to learn, create, grow and play during Raven Hill’s Summer Classes for Kids.

North Central Michigan College's $10 Million Healthcare, Skilled Trades Expansion Approved By Michigan Senate

North Central Michigan College's $10 million plan to expand healthcare, manufacturing and skilled trades education took an important step forward late yesterday as state lawmakers approved legislation to fund the college’s Career and Technical Education Enhancement project, or CATEE.
CATEE includes a total renovation of North Central’s 59-year-old Technology Building to accommodate additional state-of-the-art machinery and emerging technologies related to robotics engineering, automotive diagnostics and repair, CAD and CNC machining, mechatronics, welding and construction.
The project also includes a renovation and expansion of the existing Health Education and Science Center to accommodate the college’s growing nursing and allied health programs in order to meet regional and statewide demands for healthcare graduates.
The CATEE capital outlay request was included in House Bill 4016, a $1.3 billion supplemental appropriations bill sponsored by state Rep. Angela Witwer (D-Delta Township) that includes $630 million for a proposed Ford Motor Co. electric vehicle battery plant near Marshall. The Senate passed the bill by a vote of 22-16, which included support from state Sen. John Damoose (R-Harbor Springs), who said the inclusion of CATEE—plus an additional $3.75 million for Northwestern Michigan College’s aviation program—was critical to securing his support.
“Over the past several weeks, I have been fighting for funds that will help our region and the state and working with whoever I can in Lansing to represent our district well,” Damoose said in a statement. “First and foremost, I am proud to have been able to secure nearly $10 million for North Central Michigan College in Petoskey for the creation of the new Career and Technical Education Enhancement Center. This funding will help address the serious workforce development challenges throughout our region.”
The bill now heads to the Michigan House of Representatives. If approved by the House, it will move to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk for final approval, which could come by the end of the week. Once approved, funding would go into effect immediately.

Pet of The Week - Frankie!

Well hey there! The name's Frankie and I'm a big ole bundle of love. Please don't judge me by my size or appearance, I'm just about the sweetest guy you'll ever meet. I'm not always a big cuddler but will gladly snuggle up to you on the foot of your bed or couch. I'm a pretty calm, well-mannered boy but bring out some toys and I'm ready to play in a second! I LOVE going for walks, but sometimes I just get so excited I try to move faster than my human so maybe we can work on my leash manners together? You'll build plenty of muscles with me so I'll save you money on that gym membership, you know you don't use it as much as you should anyways. I don't mind kids either, I love pretty much everyone I come in contact with. I do well with most dogs but I really don't care for cats.

Whatcha think? Want to give me a chance? I promise I'll be the best boy I can be! Please keep in mind that the shelter can be a very stressful environment. Studies show that a minimum of 3 days decompression drastically lowers stress hormones, and allows the dog to show more personality after they have settled in.

North Central Michigan College Sees Winter 2023 Enrollment Increase

NCMC reports 8.6 percent increase in credit hours, largest increase among Michigan colleges. North Central Michigan College welcomed more students who took almost 9 percent more credit hours this winter compared to last winter, according to new data from the registrar’s office.

Enrollment increased across the board, as North Central saw upticks in both student headcount and credit hours. While total enrollment increased only slightly—by six students—credit hours increased by 1,001, or 8.6 percent, compared to Winter 2022. The college’s full-time equivalent (FTE), which aggregates part-time students into full-time students, increased by 8.56 percent, or 67 students.

North Central’s increase in credit hours was the largest among the 25 Michigan community colleges that reported data for Winter 2023. Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac and Alpena Community College notched the second and third largest credit hour gains, with 8.3 and 7.9 percent, respectively. Only nine colleges reported an increase in credit hours, with increases ranging from .9 percent to 8.6 percent.

“The increase in full-time enrolled students can be attributed in part to the student-athletes on campus as well as an increase in dorm residents in 2023,” said Registrar Joseph Balinski. Both student groups are required to be enrolled full time, which means an academic course load of at least 12 credit hours.

There are academic benefits associated with taking heavier course loads, Balinski noted, including increased persistence and higher graduation rates. A 2017 report by the Center for Community College Student Engagement (CCCSE) at the University of Texas at Austin found that 34 percent of students who attended full time for even one semester earned an associate degree or a certificate, compared to only 23 percent who enrolled part time throughout their college experience. Further, community college students who enrolled in at least 12 credits when they first arrived at college were more likely to return for a second year (77 percent compared to 64 percent) and to earn a credential (38 percent compared to 31 percent), CCCSE reported.

Corey Lansing, North Central’s director of Admission, cited a campuswide focus on belonging and student success as critical to the college’s enrollment success.

“These increases are thanks to great teamwork across campus,” Lansing said. “In addition to employing new strategies aimed at new-student recruitment, we’re also focused on efforts to retain and support our current students to make sure they’re successful on their educational journey toward graduation. Both aspects are reflected in our Winter 2023 numbers.”

Enrollment for North Central’s Fall 2023 semester opens on February 15.

Irish Boat Shop Becomes Inaugural Member of Great Lakes Boat Building School's New Marine Dealers Education Network

In Great Lakes Boat Building School’s continued pursuit of its mission to prepare students for rewarding careers in the marine industry, a first-of-its-kind program in the nation has been developed by its leadership. The marine trades institution located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan welcomes Irish Boat Shop, headquartered in Harbor Springs, Michigan as its inaugural member of the newly created GLBBS Marine Dealers Education Network (MDEN).

The MDEN is designed to provide an opportunity for marine dealers to positively influence the industry of the future by impacting the education and development of future marine industry professionals. In addition, a MDEN membership is a conduit to interact with GLBBS students and build a network for attracting well-trained and prepared graduates. Great Lakes Boat Building School has created this program to help address the dire workforce shortage in the Great Lakes region marine industry and beyond.

Irish Boat Shop was established in Harbor Springs by Dave Irish in 1961, another location was added on Lake Charlevoix in 1971 followed by Traverse City in 2018. Their modern, comprehensive facilities in these communities offer a wide range of services, sales and the strength of the Irish Boat Shop experience.

In Harbor Springs and Charlevoix, new and used boat sales, chandlery, dockage, storage and complete service are integrated to make boating a fun and hassle-free experience for their customers. In Traverse City, Irish offers new and used boat sales, chandlery and mobile service for convenience.

The Irish Boat Shop’s mission is to promote recreational boating by delivering quality and value in boats and services while meeting the obligations of their customers, employees, communities and the environment.

“We are extremely excited to partner in this unique way with Irish Boat Shop, such a respected and well-known Northern Michigan boat dealer,” said Nikki Storey, President, Great Lakes Boat Building School. “This is a classic win-win scenario as we seek to continue placing our students in rewarding careers and Irish Boat Shop offers our graduates outstanding opportunities for growth and development in their organization.”

By Irish Boat Shop enrolling as a member of the GLBBS Marine Dealers Education Network they will be able to hold an exclusive recruitment day at the school, host a student at their facilities and organize a “Marine Trades Showcase” event to create awareness regarding employment opportunities with their organization to area high schools and community members. This unique partnership entails collaborations in marketing and student recruitment that will advance the missions of both organizations.

“Our biggest challenge as a marine dealer is finding qualified, well-trained and career-ready employees,” said Michael Esposito, President, Irish Boat Shop. “We have been involved with Great Lakes Boat Building School and hired graduates that are developing careers with us now. Joining this network and sponsoring a future student was a natural next step for us to attract more talented people and enhance our relationship with the school.”

The Irish Boat Shop Student Sponsorship will benefit one student each year from either the Comprehensive Career Boat Building or Marine Service Technology program at GLBBS. Irish will fund $15,000 towards a student’s tuition with the student agreeing to work at Irish following graduation. Student sponsorships have been an excellent way to assist students in attaining their post-secondary education goals and resulting in rewarding careers in the marine industry.

The combination of a GLBBS Marine Dealership Network membership with a student sponsorship will create an effective career pathway for graduates while assisting Irish Boat Shop in enhancing their talented team.

GLBBS produces qualified students from their Comprehensive Career Boat Building Program (CCBB) and the Marine Service Technology Program (MST), in partnership with Mercury Marine University, with a consistent 100% placement rate. The School addresses the shortage of skilled trades and craftspeople in the marine industry following graduation. For prospective student enrollment information go to www.admissions@glbbs.org or call 906.484.1081.
