As children of the 1980s and 1990s, found ourselves creating a sort of emotional obituary for the cinema experiences of our youth in the background of dedicating ourselves to telling Bernie’s personal story faithfully and in great detail. Creatively as documentarians, we had to retroactively bring the theater and characters to life, since many of them were gone. In response to that challenge, we turned to an innocent hand-made aesthetic for recreations and a storyworld that required a suspension of disbelief - intentionally multi-dimensional and playful, in the spirit of reembracing the enduring magic of cinema

Char-Em ISD special education millage renewal on the ballot May 7, 2024
Election day is fast approaching on May 7, 2024, when voters in Charlevoix, Emmet and northern Antrim counties will be asked to consider renewing the long-standing Char-Em ISD special education millage. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
“This millage was originally approved by voters in 1980 and has been renewed every four years since,” said Char-Em ISD Superintendent Scott Koziol. “This millage impacts the lives of thousands of students and their families in our region, from newborns to students up to age 26, including their lives beyond school. It provides critical services to students with disabilities in every Char-Em ISD district.”
Char-Em ISD serves more than 1,330 students with special needs in 11 public school districts, two charter academies, and 5 private schools each year. Of that total, 124 infants and toddlers with disabilities receive direct and classroom-based instruction, and 107 students with significant emotional needs attend ISD-operated classrooms. Across the region, 16 special education classrooms, including 2 early childhood classrooms, are operated in the ISD’s 2.5 county service region.
The ballot issue seeks renewal of 1.4606 mills for four years, 2024-27, generating approximately $10.3 million per year for special education operational funding. For a home with a market value of $100,000, it would cost the taxpayer about $75 per year.
Koziol noted that the ballot language reads “increase” instead of “renewal” due to ballot language wording regulations. The previous special education millage expired on Dec. 31, 2023, making this request a “new” levy, if approved. “This has been the case wording-wise every four years since the first renewal in 1984,” Koziol said.

Grants for Environment, Arts & Culture Awarded:
The Charlevoix County Community Foundation hosted two grant cycles in March, responding to requests from local nonprofit organizations working to address environmental needs as well as needs in arts, music, history, and culture. Thanks to donors who participate with the Community Foundation to make a difference close to home, a total of $112,495 in grants have been awarded to nonprofits between the two cycles.

A charitable organization dedicated to improving and enriching life in this area, the Charlevoix County Community Foundation accepts gifts from individuals, families, businesses, and civic groups and manages them as permanent endowment funds, which are carefully invested to grow over time. Each year C3F makes grants that support a wide variety of programs that make our region better by using a portion of the endowment earnings.

Applications are now being accepted for our next grant cycle, Community Priorities, which is open to requests from eligible nonprofit partners to meet needs and advance opportunities in Charlevoix County. Norwood Centennial Farms: “We’re rock stars of the environment!”
Norwood Centennial Farms received all 4 MAEAP certifications on March 28, 2024.
Just eight miles south of Charlevoix on Route 31 there stands, arguably, one of the most remarkable dairy farms in the entire country: Norwood Centennial Farms, at 1498 Barnard Road. Created and run for almost 100 years by a handful of individuals springing from the same family, their names are Rolland and Mary Baumbach, Grace (Baumbach) and Harrison Warner, their son Doug Warner, and today, Doug’s daughter Sarah (Warner) Roy, and her husband Jason. Sarah may properly lay claim to the “rock star” title because it is she, following in the footsteps of her father, who saved the farm through several decades of enlightened struggle. Doug himself had to overcome PPB, getting crushed by a semi and fighting off a maddened bull.
“Sarah took over the farm three years ago. I was going to sell after 45 years,” Douglas recalls, (too much paperwork), “but she took over.”
That’s a big job by itself and Sarah found good help near the home she occupies with Jason outside Chicago. She alternates visits home with time devoted to the farm.
Today, Sarah declares, “we use as much of the cow as we can,” producing record amounts of milk, beef sticks, summer sausage, ground beef, suet wreaths, and soon to be a line of A2 Fromage cheese spreads.
Now, when you think of milk, you think of all that’s involved and, especially, of the need for an impeccably clean environment: That’s where the Michigan Agricultural Environmental Assurance Program comes in: MAEAP, as it is known, is an innovative program that helps farms of all kinds and sizes prevent or minimize agricultural pollution. And, for those who succeed, Norwood Centennial stands at the very top.
Participants can be recognized as top stewards of the environment; they can qualify for regulatory protections and preferred consideration for technical help. A great many farms are already there but “Norwood Centennial Farms was the first farm in the area to jump on board,” Sarah says, the first farm to qualify in the Charlevoix, Cheyboygan, Otsego and Emmet region.
“As long ago as Sept. 28, 2006, we had our cropping system certified, and we were the first to receive any certification in our region.” The farm has to recertify every five years. This dates to Dec. 2, 2009. “We have taken great strides to ensure that the farm reflects commitment and good stewardship of our land and water,” Sarah notes.
You can’t have cows and milk without growing crops, and the Cropping system reviews wherever crops are grown, it reviews risks related to pesticide, nutrient application and erosion control.
“So far,” Sarah says, “3,743 farms in the State of Michigan have at least one certification. Norwood Centennial Farms has all four. Only 36 other farms in the state of Michigan have four.”
So: you have the Cropping System, you have the Farmstead System, the Livestock System — involving manure storage and disposal (Oldtimers can recall ancient manure spreaders with stained siding, underneath which it read: New Idea.)
And the fourth system to be certified is the Forest, Wetland and Habitat system. Norwood Centennial Farms has forests and wetlands sufficient to qualify — “we have that system,” Sarah adds, noting that it was not easy to certify any of the systems. As seems apparent, the four systems clearly exhibit Norwood Centennial Farms and Michigan agriculture’s commitment to a safe, healthy environment.
Meanwhile, a lot has been happening at Norwood Centennial Farms, as the record shows:
“We produce A2 milk,” Sarah notes, “naturally lactose free, which is easier to digest. It took 12 years of breeding the A2 gene into the herd.” Seeing a need to adjust dehorning practices based on societal opinions, Norwood Centennial Farms started breeding the “polled” gene into the herd three years ago. “Polled” means horn free. “It’s exciting to see genetics at work” Sarah declared. Several of their calves are being born polled already.
What’s next for Norwood Centennial Farms you might ask? “We like to keep people guessing, but we are willing to do whatever it takes to keep our family legacy alive in Northern Michigan.” Sarah exclaimed.

NCMC ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR COMMENCEMENT, NURSE PINNING CEREMONIES
North Central will celebrate Class of 2024 graduates on May 3
North Central Michigan College will mark the end of a successful academic year with two important ceremonies on May 3.
The college will hold its 64th annual commencement exercises at 7:30 p.m. inside Petoskey Plastics Arena in the college’s Student and Community Resource Center. More than 250 graduates will receive their diplomas. A reception for graduates and guests will follow the ceremony.
“Commencement is the exciting culmination of years of hard work by our students and faculty,” said NCMC President David Roland Finley. “We are thrilled to celebrate our students’ achievements and watch them take the next step into a successful future.”
Monica Peck, librarian and community leader, will provide the commencement address. Peck, who graduated from North Central in 2009, is director of the Boyne District Library. In 2022, Peck was named the Public Librarian of the Year by the Michigan Library Association. Four years prior, in 2018, she was named a Rising Star by Wayne State University, where she earned her Master of Library Science degree.
Peck serves as a trustee on the Charlevoix County Community Foundation Board and the Leadership Charlevoix County Board. She also serves on the Boyne City Chamber of Commerce Board and the Otsego County Library Board. She and her husband, Jordan, live in Gaylord and share a blended family with seven children.
“I’m honored to return to NCMC to give the commencement address,” Peck said. “It’s humbling to think I could contribute to an institution that has given me so much. When I attended my commencement in 2009, I remember the excitement that I felt, and I’m thrilled to share that with the class of 2024.”
During the ceremony, college officials will award honorary degrees of Education and Community Service to Pier and Renee Borra in recognition of their contributions to the healthcare field and to the college.
Donors to North Central since 2009, the Borras have supported many funding priorities, including the Healthy Investment and Building Tomorrow Together capital campaigns. The Borras have also supported student success initiatives, technology, and scholarships, including the Borra Nursing Pathway Scholarship. Thanks to their generosity, in 2023, McLaren Northern Michigan opened the Justin A. Borra Behavioral Health Center in Cheboygan to provide mental and behavioral health resources to those in need.
North Central’s nurse pinning ceremony, the annual tradition that marks the completion of students’ nursing coursework, will be held immediately prior to commencement, at 4 p.m. in Petoskey Plastics Arena. Twenty-six student-nurses will receive their pins. A reception for nurses and their families will follow the pinning ceremony.
Lily Wilcox, who graduated from North Central’s nursing program in 2019, will deliver the keynote address to the 2024 nursing graduates. Wilcox’s professional experience spans various settings, from medical-surgical care to her leadership role as a charge nurse in Emergency Medicine at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital.
Now a travel nurse serving Northern Michigan, Wilcox continues to exemplify excellence in emergency medicine. She also uses her experience to shape the next generation of nurses, serving as a clinical instructor and tutor for NCMC’s nursing program.
