Grand Opening of Room 94 Taps & Bourbon at Odawa Casino

January 26th

Odawa Casino in Petoskey is thrilled to announce the grand opening of its newest venue, Room 94. The new Taproom is set to redefine the dining experience by seamlessly blending delectable tavern-style cuisine with a vibrant entertainment hub featuring pool tables, dart boards, video games, and a breathtaking deck offering panoramic sunset views. The grand opening celebration is set for January 26th beginning at 4pm.

Odawa Casino and its venues are owned and operated by the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, and the number 94 represents a major landmark for the tribe. In September of 1994, the tribe was signed into reaffirmation as a federally recognized sovereign nation. This opened many doors for the tribe, one of which is economic development, which helps to fund tribal services and stimulates economic growth in the surrounding community. Sovereignty allows the tribe to be self-sufficient and encourage both the tribe and its neighbors to flourish.

FARMING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE: FILM AND DISCUSSION SERIES

February 1st-February 15th

As Earth’s climate changes farmers will be faced with increasingly unpredictable weather conditions and more frequent extreme weather events. Farmers will need to gather resources, create support networks and develop strategies to manage under new climatic conditions. Regenerative farming practices have the potential to ameliorate environmental impacts and make farming systems more resilient to extreme and variable weather. Regenerative practices also have the potential to sequester carbon for long-term reduction of global warming. It is important for farmers to have a forum where they can learn about climate change and farming practices that will make them more resilient to its effects, and to share their knowledge and resources with other farmers.

Sessions 2 and 3, Feb 1 & Feb 8 (online): We will discuss readings that inform about the effects of climate change on farming, practices being developed to manage climate change and resources available to help farmers mitigate the risks associated with climate change. The selection of readings will be influenced by group interests and will be adapted to include references participants have found relevant and useful.

Session 4, Feb 15 (Hybrid): Final readings for this session will have been decided by the group in previous sessions, and will emphasize practices and resources participants intend to use. We will discuss follow-up steps we may wish to take to support farmers making changes. We will engage the Small Farm Guild, created by Crosshatch to facilitate farmer-to-farmer communication and resource sharing, to support ongoing discussion and peer support. Register here.

Pet of The Week-Kismit!

Meet Kismit! Kismit arrived here with her brother Finley due to no fault of their own.

Kismit and her brother are pretty small for huskies, but they have big personalities!

Kismit is shy of new people at first but warms up very quickly if you can be calm and patient with her. Once you've won her over, she is as sweet as can be.

Kismit and Finley are such a duo! They love to play and goof around together. Kismit does seem to be the more dominant of the two. Kismit seems to enjoy the company of other male dogs, but we are unsure of how she would be around cats.

Consider opening your hearts and giving one (or both) of these beautiful dogs a home.

Save The Date: Ring of Silence

The women of Charlevoix Zonta are constantly working on advocating for women’s and girls’ rights, which includes education of the community on important subjects that no one wants to discuss or that no one wants to believe can happen in his/her neighborhood.

One of these very important subjects is human trafficking. While most of us equate human trafficking with sex trafficking, it can take many forms of indentured servitude. This is happening everywhere and the more people that understand and recognize that, the quicker we can try to help those who may be in such a situation or to eradicate it altogether.

Please see the attached flyer for the Ring of Silence movie which will be shown February 21, 2024 at 6pm at the Charlevoix Cinema. There will be discussions following the movie, with local medical, legal and enforcement officials. Those under 18 will need to be accompanied by an adult.

STRUGGLING RED KETTLE CAMPAIGN REACHED $145,500 GOAL

The 2023 Red Kettle Campaign was the most challenging it has been within the last 5 years due to inflation and a shortage of ringers staffing Red Kettle locations. Thankfully, because of many compassionate supporters including one very generous individual who made up the difference at the end of the campaign period, The Salvation Army of Petoskey reached it’s 2023 Red Kettle Campaign goal of $145,000.

“I would like to sincerely thank the organizations, service clubs and many other volunteers and supporters that made this campaign a success. We could never hope to fill so many hours or raise the amount of money needed to help our struggling neighbors without your support” says Envoy Roman Hank.

Many local businesses and service clubs showed their support. The Northern Knights Motorcycle Club brought Christmas joy to many local children by raising $17,026 for the Petoskey and Cheboygan Salvation Army locations to split. David Meyer kindly agreed to be the Red Kettle Campaign Chairman once again for 2023 and continued being an inspiration to others to raise money for those in need. Meyer Ace graciously agreed once again to collect donations in both of their Petoskey locations raising $2,000 during the final week before Christmas. On Giving Tuesday, David Kring Chevrolet matched $2,500 while staff rang the bell at Oleson’s Food Store creating a $5,000 kettle and Fletch’s GMC-Buick-Audi matched $500 which brought in over $1,000 at Walmart.

If you would like to donate or if you would like to learn more about The Salvation Army of Petoskey’s programs and services, please visit www.SAPetoskey.org or call (231) 347-3531.

“Northwest Michigan Habitat for Humanity is leading the charge to build much needed affordable homes in our communities,” said David (DJ) Jones, Community Foundation executive director. “We are pleased to support Habitat and their vital work in housing.”

This Community Foundation grant is made possible through the following component funds: Fund for the Community, Birchwood Outreach Fund, Erickson Family Fund, and the Susan Irish Stewart Charitable Fund.
