A Look Inside This Week's Whims

December 2023, 2nd Edition

Happy last week of school, Riley families!

Thank you to all who joined us at the many opportunities to meet the Head of School candidates this past week; extra thank yous for providing your valued feedback! The decision will be made and announced soon. Keep an eye out! Then we can start creating some fun retirement celebrations for Becky - party planning anyone?

This week's calendar is full of fun: Secret Santa, Weather Your Way, coffee in the Gallery, Music and Finger Food Festival, and the beginning ruminations on Discovery Week projects that the children will dive into upon their return in January. Please support and encourage your children to do reading, research and/or creative work related to their chosen topic during the break.

Big thank you to all who attended our Parents' Night and Mini Makers' Market last week! What a talented and creative community we have. We would love to host more of these events in the future - reach out to Lindsay if you feel excited to help!

Hope you all have a happy and safe vacation, and as always- don't hesitate to reach out to Becky at any time with any questions, concerns, or ideas!

Winter Weather Protocols

Delays, cancellations, & general policies

We use RSU 13 for GUIDANCE on delays and weather cancellations. We will always follow a delay but unless you hear directly from us we will not necessarily have a cancellation alongside RSU 13. Not only do we not have busses to worry about, RSU 13 may also have reasons for cancellations that do not affect us. We're so lucky at Riley to be more nimble and flexible in our decision making!

If you have not heard further from us by 7 am, assume the last communication from Riley is what stands. And as always, do what you need to do to keep your family safe.

When possible info will be posted on FB and on WGME13 and WCSHStorm Center 6. Sign up for automatic text messages from the WCSH6 Storm Center website. We also send a text or email when possible.

In case of a power outage cancellation, call the school. If the answering machine picks up we do have power and thus school.

We do not usually do early dismissal as a storm begins, but we encourage families to make their own decisions re safety and to pick up at any time during the day.

As always, use your own discretion regarding road conditions in your area and choose safety over attendance. Please call in as early as possible if you choose not to bring your child in on inclement weather days so we do not worry about you.

Secret Santa Week

December 11th-15th

It's officially Secret Santa week! Time for all our secret elves to make it or bake it, craft it and wrap it, etcetera!

Families are welcome to join us for the final gift exchanges Friday in the Library at 10 am. Afterwards we'll enjoy a Finger Food Festival lunch together (sign up below!) and a musical afternoon. All are welcome.

The last day of school Music Festival will take place at 1:30 and families are encouraged to join and are welcome to leave with their children ( and ALL their things...) after a quick clean up.

There are loads of volunteer credit options for the week if you're able to help, but of course , all are welcome to simply join the chaos and fun of the last day of school festivities.

Have you seen Lindsay's email with your code for your total hours? Families are still welcome to pay their volunteer waiver if that feels like a preferable option!

Secret Santa excerpt from

the Riley Handbook..

The week prior to winter vacation, children choose a name from a hat and become that person’s “Secret Santa.” Throughout the week, small handmade gifts, treats or notes are left for the chosen person. The children are supported to create these themselves during the day. The emphasis is on the giving of joy and on creating surprise. The emphasis is on HAND MADE and SIMPLE. It is not a competition. Parents are encouraged to remind their child to deliver a little something every day. If your child is absent for a day - please bring two on the next day... On Friday morning, each person brings a handmade gift or treat, and each participant tries to guess who their gifts were from. Children often create elaborate delivery systems to disguise their identity. Participation is encouraged but is optional.

We still have a few spots open- sign up to bring something to the Finger Food Festival!
Secret Santa volunteer opportunities - log some hours before break!

Weather Your Way

Sleepover Monday December 11th,

Broadcast Tuesday December 12th

5:45 - 7 am

We are so excited for Weather at Your School with Channel 8 - WMTW’s Ted McInerney this coming Tuesday morning, December 12 at 5:45am! While your child may not be participating in the sleepover, we wanted to share with our whole community the activities happening on campus around the event.

Weather Morning for Everyone

Tuesday 12/13

  • The children will be on air from 5:45 until 7:00 am. Pancake breakfast and a weather lesson by Ted will immediately follow for participants.

  • Please wear WARM clothing and OUTERWEAR! Hats, gloves, snow pants, and jackets. Hand Warmers are also a great idea! The children will be spending a significant amount of time outdoors that morning and it will be cold! We will have opportunities to go inside and warm up, but let’s show everyone that Riley children know how to dress for the cold weather!!!

  • They will be wearing colorful weather themed T-shirts!

Sleepover for Middle and Upper School Monday 12/11

We are eagerly awaiting the upcoming sleep-over and to have this opportunity to be on TV, however we are treating this school night just as you do at home; quiet activities and going to bed ( extra) early. We save the slumber party atmosphere for Tent Out.

The intrepid facilitators spending the night are Anna, Ginger, Alicia, and Tori.

( please be sure to thank them!)

What to bring:

  • Sleeping bag/pillow
  • Toothbrush etc.
  • PJs
  • Full change of clothing for the next day
  • Snack and Lunch and Water Bottle for Tuesday (we can store Tuesday lunch items in our refrigerator if needed )

We very much appreciate your support! Don’t forget to tell friends and family to wake up early to watch at 5:45am!!! You are welcome to join us anytime between 5:45-7am for the broadcast. followed by breakfast. For any Wade Acres and Lower School. or children who did not sleep over, parents must remain with their child until regular dr0p off at 8:30am and are welcome to participate in the pancake breakfast.

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
