A Look Inside This Week's Whims

September 2023, 2nd Edition

Sunday greetings, all!

After a blazing few days what a relief it is to be heading into the first full week of school with a milder forecast. That said, we've got our fair share of rain predicted for the days ahead so please send your children to school with extra socks, extra clothes, rain gear, and rubber boots. As they say, there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing! We'll have a fantastic first week back rain or shine if we all aim to come prepared. Thank you for helping us keep your kids dry and comfortable as we kick off the school year.

The first week back is full of getting all the little school ducks in a row so please refer to list below to make sure you've checked everything off. A new item has been added for this week- the permission slip for Friday's All School Field Trip. More information (and the permissions slip itself) will be headed your way in the days ahead so hold tight and get your signatures ready.

As we transition from summer break to the school year your children's rest and nourishment is a high priority. Well rested and well fed children have such an easier time acclimating to life back on campus and we appreciate your support in these endeavors. This year we again want to encourage families to focus on high protein snacks, full lunch boxes, and the reduction of single use plastics - both in the form of lunch containers and food wrappers. Not only are these items bad for the environment, they pose an on campus issue as wrappers, baggies, and more begin to litter the grounds come September. Food wrappers and sandwich bags are at times an inevitable part of packing our children's lunches but reducing these items as much as you can has such a big impact. Mother Earth and the Riley Campus thanks you!

And finally, it never hurts to state arrival/dismissal parking lot etiquette as we head into a new year. Please be mindful that these rules are designed not only to keep everyone safe, but also to move traffic in and out of the driveway as efficiently as possible.

The Riley Campus Speed Limit is 8 MPH.

Please wait in line until it is your turn to pull up to the facilitator checking students in. NO PASSING under any circumstances, this applies to Wade Acres and carseat families who will be parking to drop their children off as well. EVERYONE must wait until they're at the front of the line to either allow their children to exit the car or to pull forward to park. It is extremely dangerous to pull around cars as children are exiting vehicles; please join us in keeping campus safe.

Before 3:30 and when line begins to move Wade and Lower School families MAY go clockwise in order to bypass line for front ( carseats) parking

Wishing you all a tasty meal around your family's table tonight followed by a full night's rest. Can't wait to see your shining faces in the drop off line tomorrow morning!

Tanglewood '23

Another year in the book, folks! A serious round of applause for all- from first year campers all the way up to facilitators -as the scorching heat really set out to test our crew's mettle. In true Riley fashion though, all remained flexible and upbeat as we played games, sang songs, performed skits, and so much more!

This annual event is such a wonderful way to kick off the school year and strengthen the bonds within our community. The first full day on campus always feels a little sweeter thanks to the time we shared at Tanglewood. See you next year, campers!

Lend A Hand

A note on parent volunteer hours..

The line from our Founding principles - "we value community over self" resonates strongly. As you know, this year we are asking all families to contribute to the life of the school by committing to a minimum of 20 volunteer hours per school year. Not only will this requirement provide significant cost savings, we look forward to our growth in community and connections.

While our hope is that all families will be able to complete the required volunteer hours, we do recognize that some families may not be able to do so. For those families that are unable to meet the volunteer commitment, we have offered a volunteer commitment waiver for a fee of $600. If you intend to take advantage of the waiver, please send in your $600 or contact the office right away.

We will have lots of opportunities to help you meet your minimum 20 hours. Find your niche in the classroom, working on the grounds, fundraising, on board committees, and much, much more; wherever you see a need. The meetings at the Back to School picnic will be your first opportunity to log an hour- as will the parent night meetings.

Riley thrives with a strong parent community and we look forward to continuing to deepen our connections throughout this school year!

Nourishment & Learning

Go Hand in Hand

Your brilliant children with their ever-growing, hard-working brains and bodies need an amazing amount of fuel! Please plan to pack even more protein rich food than you’d ever expect. Your children are growing, learning, active, and hungry. Lots of small hearty individual foods - and specifically ones that have some protein and substance...

If you're someone who loves a goal, aim for current RDA suggestions for optimum growth and nourishment at 19 grams a day of protein for ages 4-8 and 34 grams a day for ages 8-12.

And if Tanglewood is any indication - they are "STAAARVING" again mid afternoon. Send a second snackable !

Snack Ideas

apples & cheese ~ granola bars ~ trail mix ~ sushi ~ cheese sticks ~ pumpkin seeds ~ raisins~ sun nut butter with apple, banana, celery, or crackers ~ greek yogurt with seeds or fruit ~ veg with humus ~ hard boiled eggs ~ roasted chickpeas ~ bananas ~ edamame

Have something to say?

Submit to WHIMS!

Dear community,

As I dust off the ol' keyboard for another school year of newsletters, I want to open the door for all in the Riley community to take advantage of these weekly communications. WHIMS aims to be a wellspring of information, not only for happenings on the Riley campus but also goings-on elsewhere within the wider Riley community. WHIMS is a place to celebrate your child's off-campus accomplishments, support your small business, advertise tickets to a local performance, share a good book/podcast/movie in line with the Riley ethos, and so much more!

Guidelines for Submissions

Please submit your material as you would like it to appear in WHIMS to julieletowski@gmail.com While some light copy editing and formatting will be done as it's added to WHIMS, it can be quite time consuming to research for missing information and write something nice to read for every submission. Please include an image to accompany your submission when possible.

To be included in the upcoming Sunday WHIMS, submissions must be in by noon on the preceding Friday. Submissions that come in after that deadline will be included the following week. This is a NO EXCEPTIONS policy. Thank you for understanding and keeping this boundary as it allows for a more streamlined and efficient process while also respecting my time with my family during the weekend.

Looking forward to another year of showcasing this vibrant community through WHIMS! Thank you!

RILEY MISSION STATEMENT

The Riley School guides children to become independent, lifelong learners and innovative thinkers.

Founded as an intentionally small, progressive, ungraded elementary school in 1972, Riley recognizes each child’s unique learning style. The innovative and personalized curriculum challenges children to express themselves and develop their own intellectual and creative capabilities through discovery, questioning and active engagement.

We foster a sense of responsibility towards our natural world, our community, and each other. We value cooperation and collaboration, while balancing the individual's social, emotional and physical development with academic and intellectual growth.

At Riley we trust in children as learners. We honor and respect the uniqueness of the individual. We cherish and protect childhood.
