Christian Values: Gratitude

Luke 17:11-19 Common English Bible

______________

One would think being grateful is the easiest expression of faith, and yet, only one in ten men in this story returned to their healer to express their thanks. Being grateful is more complex than one might think. The men with skin diseases knew they were diseased. They apparently had heard of Jesus and knew of his reputation for healing and called out to him to heal them. When healed, they went on their way.

At this point the lesson is interesting. The verses immediately before this tell us that being God’s servants is who we are called to be and as servants, we should not expect any special praise. Should Jesus expect the men to return and thank him? Should the men think he is only doing his duty as a healer? The placement of this story immediately following tells me there is a message for us.

The foreigner (Samaritan) saw that he had been healed and returned to Jesus, not to praise him, but to give thanks to God. This man saw that God is working through Jesus, and he saw that God was working in his life. He came to Jesus to thank the one who released God’s grace. This gratitude is a spiritual attitude more than it is relational. Jesus last comment to him is telling, “Your faith has healed you.” In worship Sunday I hope we can take this journey from a relational to spiritual attitude about gratitude.

****Please Note: I have heard that some of you have received email messages from an email address similar to mine, but not mine, eventually asking for money. Please do not. My email address is dfrancis@umcwfb.org. My personal email address is dr.drfrancis@gmail.com. I will never email a request for money. Sin takes many forms. Drawing on people’s love of others with lies for personal gain is one. I also don’t use a different language. Be wise. God bless you.

Through the rest of October, Open Door Gallery will be displaying their Plein-Aire painting Art Show .

Plein air painting is the act of painting outdoors from nature. This is in contrast to painting inside in the studio. It is the best way for an artist to learn to see the true colors of nature and also to capture the mood and feeling of a place. Artists throughout history have gone outdoors to paint to better understand the landscape. Corot and Monet were two well known artists who worked this way.

Join us for a reception on Sunday, October 16, from 10 a.m.- noon in the Walnut Room, to celebrate the show!
