Wednesday Lemonade
May 5, 2021

Welcome back to Wednesday Lemonade, a community newsletter focused on keeping VCCA Fellows, staff, and supporters connected.
For VCCA, this month of May brings an exciting online benefit auction, a big application deadline, an in-person volunteer event, and the next in our long line of virtual Fireplace Series gatherings. Read below for more on these opportunities to support the mission of VCCA, enjoy the creative output of our Fellows, and to join us as a writer, visual artist, or composer in residence in the coming year.
Today's newsletter includes messages from Fellows Delna Dastur and Kristin Herzog and a new Composer Playlist with music by five Fellows. We also announce a new staff member! And we're showing off progress on our new patio!
Reopening is becoming more and more a reality, and we're increasingly excited to see Fellows and friends here at beautiful Mt. San Angelo.

VCCA's First Online Art Auction Opens to the Public This Friday
|
We look forward to sharing VCCA's benefit auction with the world starting May 7!
Until then, Preview Access tickets offer an opportunity to browse and bid on over 120 artworks with an option to "buy now" if you see something you absolutely love.
One piece of artwork has already sold, and 27 others have at least one bid. Proceeds will directly support VCCA's operation and mission. We're grateful to so many artists and supporters for their participation in the auction so far! On May 15, at 5 p.m. ET, we'll toast the auction's close with a brief livestream celebration, Last Look.

"First Glance" Featured SoHyun Bae, Pat Lipsky, and Bill Jacobson
|
Last week, three incredible artists joined Kevin and Sheila for a special auction preview event. Each artist showed us stunning images of their artwork, offering insights into the pieces they've donated to the LONG VIEWS auction and sharing kind words about what VCCA has meant to them in their careers. You can watch the recording on Facebook or YouTube if you missed the live event.

VCCA is pleased to welcome Deborah E. Goode to our Richmond-based staff. A long-time Richmond resident, Goode served most recently as Major Gifts Officer at the Communities in Schools national office in Arlington, Va.
“We couldn’t be more pleased to have Deborah Goode join our leadership team,” says Kevin O’Halloran, VCCA’s Executive Director. “Debbie brings a wealth of experience to her new role, and I look forward to working with her to gather philanthropic support to further VCCA’s mission.”

"I recently shipped my painting, 'Regeneration' to Gallery Art.Motif in New Delhi. Mala Aneja, its Director, is exhibiting contemporary Indian artists in celebration of the gallery's 25th anniversary. The exhibit is both virtual and in person. To accompany the show Mala has published a diary/catalog entitled, Contemporary Indian Art. I'm delighted to have been included. Locally, in the Washington DC area, I've been juried into Latela Curatorial's upcoming show entitled, Flora and Fauna."

Join us on Thursday, May 20, at 7:30 p.m. ET for the 22nd edition of the VCCA Fireplace Series. We're happy to welcome two longtime friends who reconnected at VCCA in 2009. Composer and Fellows Council member Martin Hundley will host!
Visual artist Marilyn Banner will take us on a visual journey from her early work to recent encaustic paintings inspired by close-up views of sand, stone, and lichen.
Author Ellen Prentiss Campbell will read from her forthcoming novel Frieda’s Song (the cover image is from a painting by Marilyn!).

Last month’s Fireplace Series event brought us shadow puppetry, paper cutouts, poetry, and a gleeful spirit of mutual admiration.
Katherine Fahey and Maggie Smith, who met at VCCA and have inspired each other's work, joined host E. Shawn Qaissaunee. Recordings of the event are available on VCCA's Facebook page and YouTube channel.
