Poll
Questions
& Answers
For everyone who wanted answers to the poll questions.  They are repeated below with some comments to consider.
  1. When rehabilitating a manhole structure, which components of the structure do you include in the specification?  Answer:  All of the above- you should take all parts of the manhole into consideration when designing your scope, even if you're intent is just designing around the walls, or the invert channels... be specific in the scope of work to avoid any disputes.
  2. Do you have any data on the H2S levels (PPM) in your sewer collection system?  Answer:  You should. When designing rehab and lining projects, having a comprehensive manhole assessment and understanding of which lines present the most corrosive attack will ultimately benefit the budget.  Specify the highest performance systems for your ultra-high H2S lines, and use more moderate systems on lines that do not require such an expense.  This would stretch the dollar and increase the amount of work that can be achieved.  Spend the right money on exactly where you need it, and get more done with the savings on the lesser H2S lines with a comprehensive design.
  3. When addressing H2S levels, when would you guess that the use of epoxies or similar liners should be used?  Answer:  Above 400 ppm.  Epoxies and other similar high performance liners can be costly.  They make sense simply when and where they are needed.  However, much more economical systems will fair just fine.  No need to overkill.  For example, an Epoxy Modified Cement Lining System will hold up just fine for anything under 400ppm.
  4. How familiar are you with the NACE and SSPC organizations and standards? Answer: You should be.  NACE (nace.org) and SSPC (sspc.org) are terrific standards to use in specifications.  Rather than writing out how you would describe surface prep, inspection standards, etc, on coating and lining systems, use an already defined and established standard that cannot be misinterpreted.
