"Be the Change"

with Rev. Karen

The world around us is changing all the time, and we often have to change in response. This morning, we’ll explore what it could be like to make it the other way around- how might we make creative change within and between us, toward making the world we wish to see?

The Share the Plate for May 14 and May 21 is Moms on a Mission (MOMS). Moms On a Mission is a grassroots, community based group of mothers who show up to East High School in Madison every single school day to help foster the school community our kids deserve. MOMs creates a nonviolent environment by being present , by creating relationships, by de-escalating conflict, and by bringing community volunteers together to make a difference, right away, on the ground. MOMS has quickly and effectively harnessed the collective power of dozens of volunteers to support approximately 500 students on the ground. In addition they are powerful advocates for long-term, positive social change, equity, conflict resolution, and restorative justice practices.

Our May Theme: The Path of Creativity

Our May theme invites us to come up with new possibilities and make them happen. In this space, you’ll find a new invitation into reflection on our monthly theme every week.

Check-in question: What’s the last thing you made?

All the arts we practice are apprenticeship. The big art is our life.

Minister's Musings

What do you think of when you think about creativity? A blank canvas waiting for pencil or paint? A sheet or screen waiting for words? Is it something you do on your own, in a quiet room, waiting for inspiration? I think…

Religious Education and Family Ministry

In keeping with this month’s spirit of creativity, Genevieve would like to extend a call for all children and youth to share their talents during the service. This can take many forms, from chilace lighting, to acting in our Time for All Ages, to sharing poetry or other creative talents. Please contact Genevieve for more information or if you or your child is interested.

This week on Sunday we will have a multigenerational service with everyone in the sanctuary. Join Genevieve at the Busy Hands table to learn how to make fun and colorful Gel Plate prints, be prepared to get a little messy, just like creativity often is! Coming of Age will meet after the service from 11:15 until approximately 1:00 PM. Light refreshments will be provided, please let Genevieve know of any dietary restrictions so they can be accommodated.

Share Your Thoughts on Adopting the 8th Principle at JRUUC

“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

Adopting the 8th Principle at Reeb would be an explicit statement that we acknowledge the need for work to dismantle racism and other oppressions within ourselves and our congregations and commit to doing so. Please tell us what you think about doing this by filling out this survey.

Save the Date for the JRUUC Annual Congregational Meeting! Sunday, May 21

The multiplatform meeting will be after worship. Members will receive an email on Thursday, May 11 with the proposed agenda and other information.

Congregational Listening Session Update

The Board and Rev. Karen hosted a virtual and in-person listening sessions in March, where many of you engaged with the questions: What helps you feel connected to the congregation?  What prevents you from feeling more connected to the congregation?  What would inspire you to be more involved with the congregation?/more able to be involved in the congregation?

Nobody attended the virtual session, but here are the notes from the in-person session on March 5.

Watch this space for a date for the June listening session!

New Newsletter Submission Deadline: Tuesdays at 5 PM

Caring Tree Co-Coordinator Needed!

We are looking for someone to be a long term co-coordinator beginning in June. This is a great way to strengthen your ties to the JRUUC community and get to know Reeb friends and members better. We meet once a month and the amount of support requested varies from month to month. Please contact the Caring Tree on the JRUUC website if you are interested or have questions about this opportunity.

Join Your Worship and Music Team!

We are continually looking for people to serve as Worship Associates and Tech Wizards. We’ve simplified zoom hosting and it is now done in the sanctuary, along with audio-visual work! Please email Rev. Karen with your interest or questions.

What's Happening In Unitarian Universalism

General Assembly is the annual gathering of Unitarian Universalists, where we conduct business of the Association, explore the theological underpinnings of our faith, and lean fully into our mission and principles. This is a great year to go, especially for first-timers! There will be exciting work done on the process of revising Article II of our Bylaws, worship is always wonderful, and it’s an amazing experience to be surrounded by thousands of UUs. Early bird registration ends on February 28, and there are many opportunities for financial support. Follow these links for general information, volunteer opportunities, other financial support, registration, and housing reservations.

The General Assembly and Conference Services Team leads the initiative to ensure that diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) are woven throughout, from planning to fruition. You’re invited to watch this video about historical trauma and transformative healing, which is informing our work.
